Ruairí Ó Sé He's technically correct. 'Ireland' can be used geographically, i.e. the island of Ireland, and politically, i.e. the official name of the country sometimes called 'Republic of Ireland' is simply Ireland. It can be used to mean both things, or one of either. And I can't really blame him for saying it on that night, because that NI home crowd did not come off as sympathetic to anything Irish or holding any affinity for Ireland. They came off as hostile and hateful. You'd have probably had a better time of it in most foreign countries on that night. On that night the NI crowd came off as one of the most foreign of all.

+Mark Kenna There had been a couple of bombings the week before the match, one of which took place on the Shankill Road, near the stadium. A few months later loyalists gunned down a bar full of people watching ROI's game against Italy in the World Cup, just a few months before the ceasefires. So, it was a very tense time.

The depths of their bigotry was terrible. Such deeply offensive songs as Sweet Caroline and Freed from desire. The hatred they showed towards Republic of Ireland fans when the two met was terrible wasn't it. No, wait, hang on I believe they partied and shared the honour of the freedom of Paris. There is something indeed very satisfying when people who have formed a prejudiced opinion of their own have that opinion completely and totally undermined by the actions of the people they claim are bigots.

You are wrong Darren, I have family who moved to the UK in the 40s and 50s and like an awful lot of people their children retained an Irish identity. When they came to us on holiday over the years they always said they felt they were home when they arrived at the Irish ports and Dublin Airport. You can be reared in the UK but your upbringing will allow you to follow your head or your heart. Alan McLaughlin RIP
