The Jeddah Tower, previously known as the Kingdom Tower, is an awe-inspiring skyscraper under construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Designed by the renowned American architect Adrian Smith, this ambitious project aims to redefine the skyline and push the boundaries of architectural achievement. Let’s delve into the fascinating history and current progress of this monumental structure.
The Vision and Genesis:
The idea for the Jeddah Tower emerged as part of the Jeddah Economic City project, which envisions a vibrant urban hub on the northern side of Jeddah.
The driving force behind this project is Saudi Arabian prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, a visionary leader and the chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC).
The Jeddah Tower’s design is a testament to neo-futurism, blending cutting-edge technology with aesthetic elegance.
Height: While the exact height remains confidential during development (similar to the Burj Khalifa), it is planned to exceed 1,008 meters (3,308 feet).
If completed as planned, it will surpass the Burj Khalifa by 180 meters (591 feet), making it the tallest building or structure in the world.
The tower’s all-glass façade and innovative structural elements set it apart.
Construction commenced on April 1, 2013, with an estimated completion date initially set for 2020.
However, progress faced challenges. In January 2018, work came to a halt due to labor disputes following the 2017-2019 Saudi Arabian purge.
At that point, the tower was approximately one-third complete.
