In this video, I show how I fixed the rough idle in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport.
The rough idle is caused by a combination of the outside temperature being high and the engine temperature being high as well. When the vehicle is turned off in this condition, there is no fan running or any way to direct the heat out of the engine bay. Subsequently, this trapped heat “soaks” into the injectors causing the fuel inside to vaporize and become gaseous rather than liquid. This is known as “heat soak” and “vape lock.” The vaporized fuel cannot be injected into the cylinder causing the engine to then misfire and become out of balance, causing the rough idle and shaking of the vehicle.
To fix this problem, the injectors have to be insulated from the ambient heat to keep from vaporizing the fuel. Mopar makes an insulator that does the job. You will cut the insulation to fit around the injectors and then zip tie in place. I would also recommend using heat tape over top of the insulation just for added protection.

It seems to be only a problem on the high output 4.0 engines from Chrysler. I went to a dealership and I literally watched the guy pull up the same TSB as listed above (I had it pulled up on my phone to verify) then close the window and tell me it was proprietary information and I needed to pay $120 to talk to a mechanic. He also said that my ECM had to be replaced and reflashed which was a blatant lie. Altogether his fix totaled more than $800, mine was $8 + shipping; and mine fixed the problem.
I hope this helped you guys! Good on you for trying to fix your own vehicles rather than blindly taking it to a dealership where you’re told to bend over and grab your ankles.

Bought my XJ with lifter issues. Number 3 cylinder/#6 rocker lifter was curved in in the bottom from a misfire. Replaced lifters/rods/head gasket and ran for a bit and the check engine went off after originally poped 9 codes. THIS is my next step. Thank you for this video

Thank god for this video. I live in Florida, so I'm sure you can imagine how much heat there is. I've had this issue a while, even if I park in the shade. Definitely gonna give this a try.

DEI sells kits of thermal wraps for all injectors, a plate for under the #3 and 4 injectors and the fuel rail for 80 bucks

tsb says to cut it into two 1" sections I believe, and wrap #3 injector with it twice

Ive' had my Grand Cherokee Laredo 2001 since begging.. 145K miles. Done most of my own work on it.. Hasn't been to problematic. But living in Texas, not long ago the radiator cracked and leaked out all fluid(replaced it 8 years ago). Got it home, but it heated up past temp max. Was receiving code P0307 - Missfire on Cylinder 7. Did some troubleshooting and swapped spark coil 1 w #7 and it moved to #1. So replaced Ignition Coil. All good? No more codes and replaced 4 sparks on right side of V8. But now it Idles bad and while driving doesn't sound/ feel right. Almost like a missfire.. It's noticeable right away to me, because I had it for years. At first thought it was a misfire or a piston not firing, But now think It might be fuel related. Will check fuel pressure and replace Fuel Filter(Fuel Pressure Regulator) JGC 2001 has them both in one. No engine codes. It starts and ides for 4-5 min roughly.. t hen eventually goes idle high then low and dies. Using Torque App on Android and OBDII.I think I successfully loaded all GCJ PID codes. Nothing red comes up on real time data. So far; replaced 4 sparks on right side and checked spark. Replaced Ignition coil #7 (solved Code), Cleaned IAC valve, Checked Fuel injector current on 1,3,5,7 (bulb lights). Any suggestions? Tanx

What if the motor is cold? And it idles funky then u rev it and it goes away and I’ve changed distributors rotor and plugs and wires

During the hot summer months in the south I run ethanol free fuel. I never had issues until I move back to the USA from Europe. Ethanol fuel has a lower vapor point then gas without ethanol. No issues when running ethanol free. The XJ was not design for Ethanol fuel...

Thank you for providing the information. I found the video to be really helpful. I do have a question, though. When zip ties are used to hold the insulation in place, won't the high temperature produced by the engine and the surrounding temperature cause the zip ties to melt? Can you suggest a more suitable method for securing the insulation?

Use tie wire. Like picture hanging wire almost. Thicker than that but thinner than a coat hanger. You get the idea. Aluminum if you can get it.

I'm having similar issue on my 97 zj when I am riding trails and it warms up I shut off when I crank up it runs rough for a few minutes then straightens up when getting cooled down some. So I believe it's doing same thing as you thanks man for your video I'm going to get the stuff what was it called you got from Amazon.

Hey my 98 xj runs fine for like 30 miles then stalls out and won't crank until it cools down. When cooled runs fine like nothing happened till it heats all the way back up. No codes, no check engine lights. Did thus fix work for your jeep?

I'll tell you I've been buying those Jeep Cherokees for years and each and every time I spray them with that heat resistant manifold paint that cures that problem you have to keep the throttle body clean by spring or either putting seafoam in the air are Marvel's Mystery Oil in the oil before you change the oil and all of that stuff it works try putting an entire bottle of Marvel's Mystery Oil in your oil to clean up the Varnish in the gunk that you can't see and then flushing it out putting fresh oil and put a half a bottle in there with your fresh oil and running throughout its course get a can of heat resistant manifold spray paint and paint the manifold and the entire valve cover injectors outside in oil and watch that temperature go down and you have a smooth ride in vehicle

Replace the Ac condenser! When dirty or bent it restricts the air flow causing it to over heat.

Mine idles at 3000 rpm in park, what’s the problem? I’ve cleaned the throttle body and bought a new IAC, should I buy a new TPS?

And another tidbit for you guys and most engines the intake is on top of the engine and the exhaust is somewhere on the sides or the back but on the Jeep they are literally above each other so all the heat from the exhaust manifold radiates up into the intake manifold and the fuel rail and then the ejectors the only really true fix for this is between the intake manifold and exhaust manifold put some kind of a heat shield in there they make each heat shields online but the simple fact is it's a real good engine simple to work on but this was a bad design and exhaust and intake aspect

Back in 84 when the Cherokee was released the XJ it actually had a 2.3 l or some small engine in it and then in 86 I want to say they stuck to 4.0L in it the engine bay was never designed for this big engine that's why we have heat issues it was designed for a smaller engine that never worked out

Bare with me I'm 58 and cut my teeth in drum brakes , setting points with a matchbook feeler gauge lol. Carburetors ,no clutch fans etc . Disclaimer- I'm not picking on you I swear . I jst see something thats hilarious to me or I'm dead wrong and I'll own it if I am . I did ask to bare w/me. I hava 99Jeep Cherokee and I seriously thank you for video because I'm sure this will fix mine . I'm rolling laughing about the dealership part no. and Amazon then you're waitin couple days thing. Of course the dealership has a part no .for that insulation material same as they have a part no. for a thermostat gasket but I can go to Auto Zone and buy gasket material . Aren't we doin the same thing ? You have raw material that you're goin to make basically the same as what the dealership would sell you . Like me making my thermostat gasket to match theirs . Now my point . I'm sure Amazon is Amazing , but why yo generation so happy to wait a couple days instead of goin to Auto Zone or a Rod Shop . Them Porch Pirates gonna get cha . Lmassoff Am I wrong in thinking I can go to AutoZone and buy this material and cut it to size instead of waiting for Amazon? I swear to God if I can't go to an auto parts place in by that material something is wrong LOL it's just raw material that's all it is. Damn I should delete this thing is about 10 miles long.

Make sure you use synthetic oil are you there the Shell Oil you can't put cheap oil in there make sure you have the distributor cap with the brass Terminals and the brass rotor button and this is going to kill your problem Jeep Cherokees do not like mediocre distributor caps they all go for the brass terminals you put something cheaper on there you going to run into a problem and he's going to think it's this is that if you do all of the stuff I recommended you do including putting in the Marvel's Mystery Oil 4oz in the gas tank you going to have a smooth running vehicle for as long as you own it stuff really works I don't give a damn what anybody says I've been driving these Jeeps for over 20 years I know what works for them I've owned 12 of them different makes and models and with the same 4.0 6 cylinder I'm giving them to family members and just bought another one after another one and nobody ever had any complaints they are very excellent Vehicles as long as you stay on top of them

4 hole injectors will fix the problem and with a pack of $8 spark plug boots of off ebay cut them in half and slip them over the injector bam fixed

Interesting. Water usually cools the engine a bit more by about 15-20 degrees or more. I run straight d.i. water in my small block 350ci. In my little s10 and run about 170-180 on a hot summer day in Hawaii. Coolant/antifreeze was about 210 degrees. Maybe mixing the two make it run hotter?

It’s intaking from roughly the same place as factory, but can pull more volume resulting in cooler air. With the Air dams, not as hot as you think.
