I ordered my Grand Cherokee 4xe in February of 2022, and what a fiasco that became. Delays upon delays, and then when the car got built I found out that my dealer ordered the wrong thing, so back to square one. Then I found a white one that had been built and was in final inspection at another dealership, but after 6+ weeks of it stuck in final inspection I bailed and found the one I bought at another dealership. It didn't have the passenger screen, but I didn't care because it wasn't a feature I cared much about anyway.
I've put over 3000 miles on it, and I absolutely love it! It's a huge improvement over my previous Grand Cherokee in pretty much every way (except the price). My only complaint is that the 4-cylinder engine is rather unpleasant sounding when it's working hard, but other than that no serious complaints, only some nit-picky things that don't really matter.
This is one of my longer reviews, but I actually cut out about 12 minutes of additional material since it was running so long. This review would have easily been 2+ hours long if I had tried to cover everything. This car is loaded with tech and features, but I was only able to talk about a fraction of them in this review. Nevertheless, I hope I covered the major ones.
I should state for the record that I bought this Jeep on my own accord. Jeep has nothing to do with this review, and they have no idea that I'm even making it.

So I've watched a lot of 4xe reviews cause in Europe Poland we only have the 4xe option to choose due to Europe emissions regulations. I must say I'm amazed how good Your review is. It is actually the best one I've seen!

One of the best thought-out and articulated reviews I have watched. I am also a Jeep owner and have a 2016 Grand Cherokee Summit 4x4 with the Hemi, and I really don't see myself changing power plants in my next Jeep. Would have enjoyed watching your review of the Lexus GX470, I have also owned one and nothing drives quite like a Lexus! Jeeps also have a very unique drive feel, the air suspension, in my opinion, is one of the best for an SUV, and love the 11+ inches of ground clearance when in off-road 2!

What a refreshing review video. Great, calm delivery, but what I really appreciated is your attention to detail. Your small nitpicks around UX (button placement, screen design, etc) are spot-on. In this world people tend to gloss over those, or downright accuse you of being crazy. People can get really confrontational about that stuff. I’m here to tell you details matter.

Just saw Jeep 4XE review and loved it. i just bought an Overland 4XE that has pretty much the same as you Summit but without the fancy seats! Was more intrigued by your Austin presence (yes saw the Steiner Ranch sign) and your hill country excursion. As a former Austinite and a Texas Ex, I became homesick of sorts. What an incredible job you do of presenting this vehicle. You manage to talk about all of the things that I actually care about without getting lost in performance-related characteristics that often overwhelm videos about cars. I want to know that if I purchased the car that I would actually enjoy driving it and you make an excellent argument for those of us who care more about that than anything else.

Great review, like the way you presented, very calm and detailed. The fuel economy number seems very off to me, then I watched Alex on Auto's review and realize that FCA has some really weird calculations on their plug-in hybrids. I would just do a quick full tank run without any electricity, log the mileage and fuel back to full at a gas station and write down the gallons added, then you can calculate the real MPG number. The tricky thing about the plug-in's overall fuel economy is it really depends on how often you charge it and what your commute is like. Owning a plug-in myself, the car's electric range pretty much covers my commute and I charge it daily. As a result, even though the car has basically identical gas MPG as its gas counterparts, I rarely need to go to the gas station. I'm getting a bas 4XE soon, not as fancy but totally blow my mind. All my previous cars are "luxury brands" but Jeep really comes a long way, the base trim is pretty comfy for me already. Hope to see you on Texas road one day, I will be sure to beep at you lol!

The WL is one of the sharpest designs from Jeep in a while. Great review! 4xE Trailhawk or Overland is likely going to be my next vehicle with the family getting bigger and my old Jeep XJ becoming more of a toy these days than a daily driver. I have a digital Rearview in my XJ and it's awesome since my rear window is blocked by a spare tire. I can see it being useful when the rear cargo is packed full of gear and blocking the window or if in the future they integrate trailer camera's and you can see behind whatever you're towing.

After owning this car for a week I've only charged it once because I don't have the ability to do it at home and public charging locations are very scarce. So my battery is on 0%! But I just found a very fun way to drive this car. I leave it in hybrid mode and put it in sport driving mode and it hauls ass! As an added bonus, the battery charges more than it ever has before. I love this car!

Been debating on getting a 4xe but don't have the ability to charge at home. So you drive the jeep without the electric assist on the regular?
@asarc175
@asarc175 6 ай бұрын
I drive in Sport mode on the highway which keeps the engine engaged at all times while using some battery power also. For some reason, the battery actually charges while in Sport mode. Then I switch to Auto which uses mostly electric unless you punch the gas and then the engine kicks in. The down side is that you'll only get about 17 to 18 MPG. If you're able to charge everyday, they claim you can get up to 56 MPG. You should test drive it to see what I'm talking about with the different modes.

Great review, thanks! I’m over 60 and have a similar mirror in my 2021 Rav 4 Prime . I too did not like it initially for months……but then I did, it takes awhile for the brain to adjust ,so persevere! …just like new prescription eyeglasses, or contact lenses. It rocks, and i set it there always, it’s way better for periphery, and at night to avoid any headlights in the eyes, etc etc . We want a larger SUV as our 2nd vehicle, and similar to you, replacing our terrific 2015 GC V6 Overland. We might do the Summit as you have, but inclined to stick with the same reliable gas 6 cylinder, for price , & fear of Stellantis ruining a good thing.

I’ve got a 2014 Summit with the EcoDiesel. I would have to say that the fuel economy is amazing in that thing. I’ve done a nearly 700 mile trip on one tank of fuel (I was on fumes at the end, and I did have a 3 gallon fuel can with me just in case). I do like only having to fuel up once a month, but I’m not a fan of the DEF issues when the temps drop (I live in Interior Alaska). Anything around +20F messes with the system. Overall, it’s a fantastic vehicle. Thanks for giving an update on the new one. I’ll wait a bit longer, but the 4xe may be the only option that may sway me away from my EcoDiesel. Cheers, and thank you for the great review.

So, mine is a 2022 which came out at the end of last year. For some unknown reason they didn't just call it a 2023 because it's 100% identical to the 2023's except that for the 2023's they got rid of the light grey interior which is what I have. I think the light gray is by far the best color for that interior, so it's a shame you can now only get it in black or orange. Regardless, there's no other difference between the 2022's and 2023's.

I have a limited, and one complaint I have in the Texas heat is... no physical MAX AC button!!! Other than that I love mine. I absolutely LOVE my digital rear view mirror. It allows me to have 5% tint on the rear so I can still see out at night. And headlights never blind you at all. No waiting for it to dim. It did take a little getting used to focusing on the mirror from the road. But it's no different than looking at your dash or the center display. Just took some getting used to. Pretty sure I'll never get another car without it. I'm over 40 too.

One of best reviewers of cars ! Leased one this morning with the upfront Fed Tax credits which lowers the cap cost it brings the price from 75+ way down to the mid 60's then you take the End of Year pricing it brings it to the mid 50's you can't get a Summit gas for this price - no way its a no brainer. Leaving a Buick Enclave Avenir lease in a few days. GM leases are really horrible - three years ago they were cheap. My neighbor has a 4XE Limited his wife has a gas L and daughter has an L. Leasing this year overall is the worst I've seen in many years due to the interest rates. Tried a Jeep dealer and the price monthly zero down on an Overland which was ok and the price was in the low 7's. Tried my friend's dealer and I got a Summit without the Tech package and passenger screen. Would have liked the Night Vision and HUD but for 650 3 a month for three years I can't complain. Silver with Black. Otherwise you are looking at a BMW X3 base or Audi Q5 for much more. I can't wait to pick it up on 1/02/24 due to property loopholes. Its well built, looks amazing and frankly the looks and interior are just as good or better than a Range Rover Sport with better mileage.

Price wise, the Overland is best bet for the dollar, IMO. I do have the passenger screen and my wife using it and its good for long trips. The rear view camera is wonderful and I use it all the time. I never had one, and so its helpful to have. The 19 speaker system is sick. Listening to a concert at 80 MPH its like a dream. Enjoy this sweet car.

I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude Trim. It's been an excellent car for the last 7 years. The engine has been bullet proof, lots of tech and everything still works. Just had an AC compressor replaced under warranty. It's the first car I've ever had where everything still works after 100,000 miles. Only thing is the suspension is kind of bouncy. It sounds like they've improved that now though. My wife and I are waiting for the all new 2024 Lexus GX that should come out in a year or so to replace it.

The park assist is great if you're not comfortable parallel parking, but yeah I always back in myself. I have a 23 Overland (my 3rd Overland) and I'm really annoyed when pulling into a spot that front and surround cameras don't automatically kick on. Hell, I had a Hyundai Santa Fe that did that and that car isn't even in the same league as the JGC. Missed opportunity by Jeep I've only had the car a month and the digital rear view mirror has been disabled because I found it weird/odd to use. I should give it a shot.

Hello and thank you for the video! One quick question: What is the combined hybrid fuel economy for mixed driving when the battery has a charge?
@BrianGreenstone

It varies tremendously depending on what kind of driving and what kind of terrain, but on average I’d say it’s probably around 57 MPG.

This could get a bit lengthy. My wife and I took delivery of our 2022 4xe in October, 2022. As of 12/23 it has 36,500 mi on it and we have made 5 cross country trips with the vehicle. It was our 3rd new GC in 4 years. We previously purchased a new GC in 2019 and another in 2020. Both of those were the Limited version and we absolutely loved them. We put 38,000 miles on the 2019 and 73,000 on the 2020. We had absolutely ZERO problems with either of those vehicles. For the most part I concur with Mr. Greenstone on his evaluation of the 4xe. HOWEVER, when I looked at his video I noticed that his vehicle had fewer than 3,000 miles on it. I do not believe that a thorough evaluation of any vehicle can be made with such low mileage. Today is 12/30/2023 and my wife and I are considering whether or not we will buy a 2024 model. It's 60/40 that we will. I have more than 10 times the driving experience in the 4xe than Mr. Greenstone. Here are my thoughts: 1. The vehicle is great around town in electric mode, but not worth very much on the open road. In fact, our 2019 and 2020 GC's were better cross country vehicles. A. Around town. The EV mode is quiet, smooth and the acceleration is wholly adequate. I'm not one to race from stoplight to stoplight, but if this is your thing, maybe you should take the leap and buy a Tesla. I do not concur with Mr. Greenstone about the 4xe taking a long while to get to 60 mph. Where in town do you really need to do this? But I digress. The issue is the range. If your roundtrip errand is 26 miles or less, the 4xe is wonderful in electric mode. But you need to remember that once you get home you will need to immediately plug it in. And this is where reality sets in. In the scheme of things, 26 mi is not very much. For us, a 20-mi roundtrip for a doctor's appointment will eat up more than 75% of your battery charge. After arriving back at the house, you can plug it in immediately. But remember - - - it takes a while for the batteries to charge up. So, if you need to run another errand after returning from the doctor, the likelihood is that you'll be relying on the gasoline engine to get you around. B. On the open road. The 4xe is considerably less efficient than our 2019 and 2020 models with the 3.6 L engine. But, most of all, charging stations are few and far between. And even if they were plentiful, your 26 mi range will do you little good while traveling across Texas. C. Charging times. Mr. Greenstone glosses over the amount of time it takes to charge the fully depleted batteries. I can see from the video that he probably has not used the Level 1 charging cable which comes with the car and which plugs into a standard 110 volt household outlet. Maybe this is because it can take 12+ hrs to charge the batteries by this method. This is fine for overnight charging, but next to useless during the day. Mr. Greenstone is correct that the vehicle can be charged in 2+ hrs, but this requires a Level 2 charger. Mine cost $695 on Amazon. But there's more. First, does your electrical panel have sufficient space to accommodate a 50-amp double pole breaker? If not, you will need to install a subpanel. And, unless you're an electrician, get ready to spend a few bucks on an installation charge. And there's even more. Mr. Greenstone talks about the cost of charging. But YOU need to bear in mind that these costs can vary. WHEN you charge makes a vast difference. And WHERE you are located in the country also makes a vast difference. Check these things out and go into your 4xe purchase with open eyes. 2. The interior. A. I concur with Mr. Greenstone on the piano black plastic coating on the center console. Black? Really? Black shows every defect imaginable, including minor scratches, dog hair, fingerprints and you name it. Our 2019 and 2020 Grand Cherokees had an opaque aluminum looking coating which was phenomenal. Why, Jeep, did you cheapen the 4xe in this regard. B. Mode selector buttons. As Mr. Greenstone observed, terrible placement. You have to peer around the steering wheel to find them. Not good. C. Instrument panel. Two words stand out: Information overload. D. Passenger screen. Our 4xe has it. My wife never uses it. In a word, worthless. There are four other words: A waste of money. E. Cupholders. There should be removable inserts for cleaning. 3. Exterior. It seems to me like all the car manufacturers somehow get together at some secret location and decide what the exterior of their vehicles will look like. When I first saw the new Jeep design, I thought the rear looked like a Toyota Highlander. And I don't like ' Toyotas. Nevertheless, and with all deference to the Grand Wagoneer, the 4xe is the Jeep brand flagship. Why not offer it in exterior colors which set it apart from the run of the mill ICE models? Other than a feeble attempt at adding a big of green, why not add a nameplate denoting the vehicle as a hybrid? 4. Service. Our 4xe has not been without its problems. The most telling happened at around 30,000 miles when the vehicle would not function in the electric mode. The problem was twofold: First, a part called the ECH malfunctioned. This is short for Electric Coolant Heater. It was a royal pain to effect the repair. Jeep has known about this deficiency for some time and the ECH is now in its second revision. The problem was locating one. Once I was able to locate it, then the problem was to find a dealership which had a Jeep certified Level 3 technician to install the part. Believe me when I tell you that not all dealerships have Level 3 technicians. I am not the only one to have this problem. Check it out on the internet. The other issue was the back liftgate. One day while coming out of the supermarket, my wife could not open the back liftgate. It simply malfunctioned. Would not open. Period. Can you imagine having a flat tire and not being able to get the liftgate to open? And, in its infinite wisdom, Jeep failed to provide for a manual way to open the gate. This - - - with a vehicle which had 32,000 miles on it at the time. When I brought the vehicle in for a warranty repair, I told the service manage that I have a Model A Ford which has been in my family since 1932. It's a rare version of the Model A and it has a rear cargo door. In 93 years, how many times would you think that the rear door of my Model A. has failed to open? Answer: Zero. This sort of thing should simply not be happening on a vehicle with 32,000 miles on it. It shouldn't be happening to a vehicle with 250,000 miles on it. Unacceptable. 5. Off road. Mr. Greenstone talks about off road capabilities. Perhaps he will take a $70,000+ vehicle off road. I won't. And I don't know anyone who does. Bottom line. Will we be trading in our 2022 4xe for a 2024 model? As I said earlier, right now it's 60/40 that we will. One surprise has been that my wife and I are among the first customers to purchase the 4xe. You would think that Jeep would have sent us out a questionnaire asking us how we like the vehicle, etc. etc. But - - - nothing. This has been a bit long. But I have written it honestly and hoping that it will help someone.

Now that I've put over 20K miles on it I'm hoping to do a followup review next month. That being said, so far I've had zero issues with the car. It has only been back to the dealership twice and both times were just for an oil change and tire rotation. That makes it the most reliable car I've ever owned in the first year. Yes, it is better for city driving than long highway trips, but it's still far more efficient even in gas-only mode than my previous 2014 V8. The V6 still gets better highway MPG, but that's not a fair comparison because the V6 is woefully underpowered for that car. Everyone I've ever known who mistakenly bought the V6 version got rid of it after less than 2 years because it was so underpowered. You may get better MPG with the V6, but you're sacrificing a huge amount of power. The 4xe, however, has noticeably more HP and Torque than the V8 which is a fairer comparison, but much better MPG. The electric acceleration is fine if you're driving around city streets, but in our area of Austin the roads are 55 to 60MPH, and accelerating to that speed from a standstill in Electric mode is painful and sometimes dangerous. The only major downside I've experienced so far is that after 20K miles the battery has lost about 10% of its capacity, so I'm no longer getting 24-26 miles on electric. It's more like 22-23 now, and I'm wondering how much more it will degrade.

I know a lot of people who love off-roading but don't want to sacrafice on luxury and comfort and so get a car like this. It definitely isn't rare. And with kitted out Jeep Wranglers, Gladiators, and Toyota Seqouias easily going for $70K to $80K, it isn't unusual now to be off-roading expensive cars. There's a reason this has adaptive suspension. It is meant to be able to handle all types of terrain.

It sounds like you just bought the wrong vehicle. Service issues aside, most of what you are complaining about is just how plug in hybrids work. They are meant to be short range evs that have better power and decent mileage as regular hybrids on longer trips. It sounds like you would be better suited with an actual EV.

@richardnelson6097 you don't have to believe I know what im talking about for me to be correct. All the stuff you're complaining about regarding range and charging are just how plug in hybrids work. Some will be somewhat better than others, but they are fundamentally the same. If those are big problems for you, there are other types of vehicles that probably suit your needs or desires better.

Chrysler - and most car makers - raise the rear seats as it GREATLY lowers car sickness; on pare with how facing backwards seats CREATED car sickness badly. Very important for your eyes to see "forward". One of the best reviews. My sister had a 2005 and now has a 2014 Limited Grand Cherokee (rusting) - so she want something, thinking a midsized (Ranger?) truck as her husband carries lumber and such often now. Was thinking the new hybrid model - you gave one of the best reviews I have seen.

Well done. I appreciate this video. I currently have an '18 GC Trailhawk, which I like a lot. But the new TH is hugely more expensive, and I'm not being pulled in by the styling of this new GC (except the interior). Gotta admit, I'm leaning toward the new LR Defender, a very cool alternative in this high-end price range, more unique, and more of a head-turner.

We just got a trail hawk. Kind of like the idea of the front camera after taking an older Ram to a remote VRBO in Moab. 😬. Was scary to go around a curve and over a hill without knowing what’s in front/below! Has More rugged tires and more off road options. But we’ve only had this for 4 days. 🤣

@BrianGreenstone Great review! Nice to hear from a real owner. I have a question, I test drive 2023 GC Trailhawk and Summit trims few days a go. In both of them I observed clunking noise when I drive them on uneven roads or potholes, it seems the noise is coming from the suspension. I'm wondering if you experienced same? I'm considering buying one of the 4xe, but I didn't expect such noise from a car with "luxury" label.

In May it will be one year since my order of the summit Reserve 4xe... In May 2022 passenger displays were orderable now they are not anymore. So if they ever deliver it won't have rear displays? The price in Italy is 107,000 euros + 1,300 for the white color + 2,700 for the displays, 1,270 euros for registration and 400 euros for the safety equipment.

The best review 👌 New GCL Summit owner here. Some thoughts: Do you wear progressive lenses? This may hinder your dash view and particularly your use of the digital review mirror. I purchased non progressive lenses for driving and its perfect as the mirror is far enough to see properly. Have found the mirror so useful when the rear view is otherwise obstructed. Totally agree re: rear cover - that needs to be included, particularly for the $. This vehicle is a perfect highway cruiser for us. Super comfortable and does everything you ask of it - in snow, on hills, off road its a gem. Not the most powerful engine (V6) but I'm not towing. There is so much digital customization. Still learning. Loving the grey interior as well. I have the black exterior and it's tough to keep clean. The driver's interior door handle stopped working two months after I picked up the car. Dealer fixed it immediately and I've otherwise had no other issues. Pricey vehicle but I'd say it's similar to the Range Rover, especially on the inside, and that's way more $. I'd buy it again. Heading on another road trip. Loving it! Thank you again for the review. Appreciate hearing your perspective on your configuration.
