In this video I have a look at a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was towed in from another shop as a no start, no crank. It doesn't take long to determine that the ECM is at fault and will need a new one. -Enjoy!

Back in the 70's, I had a mobile auto repair business in Kansas. I got a lot of jobs where the shops were up to their *** , and they would parcel out to me work that would be worth my time, but not theirs. Was a great relationship for me and them. I knew my limits at the time, and wouldn't take on something where I might embarrass them or myself. Took on a few 'challenges' and learned a whole lot. Your area is fortunate to have you there. Great job on the diagnostic videos!

I encountered the same problem on a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 days ago. i suspected the ASD then after a few tests I decided on the ECM. The car was in a parking lot w/ 100*F outside. This isn't mechanics, this is engineering. The skills demonstrated are the same as analogue component fault finding, pretty near. Am familiar with that from way back, now out of practice, but watching skills that meet with memories of using logic, knowledge and understanding to get there quicker. My boss complimented me once for finding a noisy variable capacitor, I then demonstrated that by wobbling each of approx 20 caps in a small area (the vertical amplifier of an oscilloscope) and found the same fault in 10 seconds. I had been working on it for 2.5 hours ! He shrugged and said "experience" as he walked away, happy. Mate you have a kind understanding of fault finding, you share ! EVERYONE within 300 miles of you who own a car/truck is very lucky to have you. An example to the rest of the industry. HARD WORK ! The true way to experience :)

The owner wouldn't know this was going to be complex issue. Possibly the fuel pump had burned out running all the time after the ECM failed and needed replacement. Avoca can't support a full time diagnostic tech, but neither does it need a couple dozen. But it apparently does keep a fair number of shops in business. So it looks like Eric and the other shops have a nice informal network set up going.
@Really2u
@Really2u 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheMechanicj you are not a bad shop. Not by any means. You are getting better with each one you put back on the road. You also are there to save those like me that thought i could fix it. Then just screwed it up even more. None of the commenters on here should make you feel under used. Since you are in business and staying that way you are doing what you do good. Eric didn't just bounce out of his mother with a scanner in one hand and a wrench in the other. Everything comes with time experience and study. So don't feel bad. Don't loose hope. Never stop learning. Those customers that you give to another shop. They will respect your honesty. They will come back to you for that. Its the shop that says they fixed it and it breaks as the customer drives away. Those are the wrong guys. Eric says it as well. If i can do it so can you. Don't forget that.

I have had a TON of that style Chrysler ECM's being bad. I have tried the repaired/reman ones and they are usually junk as well.

My guess would be inadequate ESD protection on the I/O points is causing damage way too easily. It's not a good idea to connect or disconnect things while they're live when that's the case, because the spikes can destroy the input or output line. ESD = Electro Static Discharge. I/O = Input / Output, for those wondering.

Thank you very much Eric. I would like to see the video where you did switching with EMC pin and other info. I think that I may have to change the EMC on mine. I know that I will be needing to deal with the VIN and whatever else I need to program the new EMC.

Great troubleshooting. I live for the day I can hear the compressor running, the heater going, the doorbell dinging and the phone ringing all at the same time.
