Taking advantage of the Wouxun's KG-1000G's flexible installation options with it's detachable faceplate that can be mounted up to 15 feet from the main unit. With Jeep Wrangler JK, JKU, and JLU limited space this might be the best option for a GMRS radio not to mention it's 50 watts of power, dual channel watch, 8 repeater channels, and other features.

Thanks! I do like how many options the KG-1000G provides for installation with the ability to remotely locate the main chassis. It's been a great radio. I will say the speaker in the Mic is not that loud so if you install the chassis under the seat you may need to install an external speaker. Good luck with your install!

Install really looks great! I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that I'm doing the exact same install. Your video was very helpful. I discovered there is also another place to route the antenna wire. Its located to the side of the brake booster. Its a rubber piece with cutouts, looks like this +. I pushed the antenna wire through there and it also came out through the dash floorboard. Great video. Really explained well.

Thanks! Also, thanks for the tip on another location to route wires through - I'll have to check it out. I'm planning on running some power to the back of the jeep and this could come in handy.

That's the way it's done! I just did a similar clean install for my Subaru and now I need to do the Jeep JK. On the Subaru, I went with the Midland MXTA26 6DB antenna and it came tuned at 1.1:1 right out of the box, so I got another for the Jeep. I will be using the same Midland MXTA21 antenna mount you did, so great to see how you routed the cable. I also got the same Midland antenna cables since they have the removable PL-259 (UHF Male) connector, making it much easier to route. I am also looking at a very similar mic mount bracket, so nice to see how that looks installed. Thanks for a great video and thanks for including the links too.

Thanks! I've considered buying a full size antenna just to see how it compares performance wise to the ghost antenna so I think you have convinced me to order the MXTA26. I really like the MXTA21 antenna mount and it's mounting location is perfect (you hardly notice it or the antenna - it just looks like it belongs). I also like the location of the mic mount although when on a trail it can be cumbersome getting the mic in or out of it. I have considered looking at maybe a magnetic mount similar to it. Good luck with your install!

Looks great! Only change I would do is run antennae up b pillar, across roll bar under foam, down passenger b pillar and under seat to radio.

Great install and video! I'm curious if you're going to be happy with the Midland Ghost antenna... If it's just for trail running with friends, it'll probably be fine.

Thanks! I do mostly use it for trail rides and overlanding while traveling with friends. It has done great for that but I could see looking at a different antenna and making sure the mounting location cleared the roof line if you were looking to use it for more than that.

I bought 2 kg-1000 plus versions, my intention was for repeater use. Unfortunately both were useless for this, the receivers are horrible in these radios. I set both of them next to a Junk QyT-kt8900, after seeing that I sent both of them back. But I will say they get out really good, but if I can’t hear them what’s the point.

How does the GRMS work? What kind of range? Is the reception clear? What are the cons of the radio after using it?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired Жыл бұрын
The reception is very clear. As for range I mostly use it in the N.GA mountains on trail rides where we are within close range of each other. Traveling to our destination there are times we are separated by several miles and I have no issue with clarity or static. On this installation I did mount my antenna low on the windshield which is not ideal for range. I would recommend either mounting it above the roofline or a taller antenna that clears the roofline for longer distances. Here is a link to Notarubicon Productions where he does an excellent job reviewing the radio along with range tests kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irCeacSanpyYp5c.html. He also has a wealth of videos that cover GMRS, Comparisons, Features, Reviews, etc. I mainly chose the Wouxun because of the ability to remotely mount the chassis which does lead to a con. When you mount the chassis remotely you might not be able to hear the speaker (my case). There is a speaker in the mic but it's not loud enough for a Jeep and I had to add an external speaker. Another con could be the price depending on your needs. If you are looking to utilizes repeaters the wouxun kg-1000g is an excellent choice.

Great Build Video, you made it all look so simple!! Do you have any post configuration issues with the 3DB Ghost antenna and the Wouxun communications, sending and receiving signals & how is the signal strength with the Ghost antenna?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The one recommendation I would make is that if you are in an area with obstacles to make sure you mount it above the roof line. Overall I'm really happy with the ghost antenna and it has performed better than I had hoped. I really like the low profile and unless you are looking for it you really don't notice it. The only time I have issues (poor range / reception) is when I'm in the mountains and I'm sure the main reason is because I mounted it below the roof line. Mainly I use the radio while on group trail rides where you are in close proximity so it's not a huge issue but definitely when mounting take in consideration of how you are going to use it. I do have plans to pick up a full size antenna that will reach above my roof to see how it performs vs the ghost antenna while in the mountains. If it's an improvement I'll still run the Ghost 99% of the time but change out to the full size when needed. The only other issue I've had with the installation was hearing the speaker with the chassis mounted under the seat. The Wouxun also comes with a speaker in the mic but in a jeep it just isn't loud enough. The addition of the external speaker made a huge difference and resolved that issue.

Excellent video. Does that antenna receive the full range of frequencies that this unit is capable of receiving?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! As for the antenna - I'm sure it is capable of receiving the full range of frequencies although it is tuned for GMRS channels so I'm not sure of the quality. I mainly use it on trail rides and overlanding trips using the preprogrammed channels.

@@NoAsphaltRequired I ended up ordering the radio and your video will help a lot with the install in my Grand Cherokee. Think I'm gonna invest in a distribution block for power and ground out under the hood. The radio plus trailer brake controller and some lights will get messy on the battery terminal.
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired Жыл бұрын
@@risbill1 That's awesome - I think you're really going to like the radio. A distribution box will definitely help in keeping the wiring from becoming a rats nest. Good luck with your install! Let me know how it turns out.

Looks good. I'm annoyed there's no mounting stuff like that for Grand Cherokees. Did you run a relay so it shuts off with the key?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired Жыл бұрын
I didn’t when I initially installed it. I did eventually install a Voswitch that it is now connected to and shuts off with the key. If you direct wire it to the battery and did forget to shut it off the Wouxun will automatically shut off when it detects the battery power below 11.5 volts.

still blows my mind that its legal in some states to run a jeep with no doors.. you tend to try to discourage it when you pull what's left of a 10 year old childs arm out of someone elses windshield :/

What adapters were required? Does it use a PL259 from the antenna to the back of the radio?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired 2 жыл бұрын
No adapter is needed. I used a midland antenna cable that has a removable uhf connector for easy routing. Once you have it routed you simply screw the uhf end back on. A link to the exact antenna cable I used is in the description.

@NoAsphaltRequired Жыл бұрын
@@ernieswanson9925 Thanks - If you go above a 3 inch lift it starts to get really expensive. But no matter what lift you decide on make sure you get a complete lift kit with control arms and front / rear track bars. The control arms will keep the caster angle correct and the track bars will keep the axles centered so it doesn’t drift going down the road.

I'm curious if you received a computer dashboard error when you reconnected the seat and, if so, were you able to clear the error code yourself (or did you have to have a dealer do it)?
@NoAsphaltRequired
@NoAsphaltRequired 2 жыл бұрын
I did not get a warning light or error code. Disconnect the battery before you disconnect the airbag from the seat and do not reconnect the battery until after you have reconnected the airbag and you should not get an error code. I've seen plenty of people on jeep forums who say the have removed the seat, reconnected the battery, and driven the jeep before reinstalling the seat without issue but I wasn't willing to chance it.

@@NoAsphaltRequired I made that error installing a stereo amplifier under the driver seat of a brand new 2004 Nissan Titan. The dealer wanted $225 to make the error light turn off. I drove the truck for 13 years with that light on...LOL.

Ouch - that would hurt - I might have driven it like that myself for that price. I know there is always that chance with these new vehicles. That's why I like the old CJs - no warning lights to worry about.
