Literally days before Cindy and I needed to head out to SEMA 2018, we desperately scrambled to make a series of last minute upgrades to our JL Wrangler and specifically, because we were planning to attend the 1st Annual JLX, immediately after the show. Of course, based on past experience, we knew that we'd be needing a bit more lift if only to improve our break over angles and we decided to make that possible with a set of Rancho 3.5" coils and all new RS9000XL long travel shocks. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see what it took for us to install everything but without going too much into detail as we have in the past. As a reference, I have included a host of links that highlight our previous installations and if needed, they should be able to help you along. We hope you enjoy the video and find the information in it to be useful.

LOL!! I could have gotten around the need for them had I unbolted the control arms. The jam nuts on the lower arms were binding on the mounts. But, the compressors made things go a lot faster.

LOL!! Truth be told, this was the first time I've had to use a set of spring compressors in over 20 years. The last time I used them, I was installing a lift on an Isuzu Rodeo. I could have gotten around using them but they sure made quick work of things :)

HI! Well, I mostly want to know how these lift kits ride on the street since that's where 90% of my riding will me. It's kinda hard to find reviews on that unless I dig into the forums. Simple things like how it handles potholes, or if it rides too soft/too hard, or how the steering is affected compared to stock. I still haven't bought a lift kit for my JL but i'll probably ask on one of the liftkit videos that you made if I made a decision on one! thanks for the reply and keep those videos coming!

would I be correct if I said that a suspension lift creates more ground clearance between the bottom of the ladder frame chassis of an SUV & the ground surface??? In turn aiding in increased break over angle!!! Meaning a suspension lift also raises the chassis frame as well since the suspension (hangs below the chassis frame) is attached at or marginally below the chassis level!!!

Awesome set up I hope it works better for your needs. Let’s know how it compares to the previous lift.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
While we're typically not into tall lifts, the JL has a 2" longer wheel base and I swear, we could feel it on the rocks. What the extra lift does is help to restore our break over angles and while there is a center of gravity penalty, I think it was worth it. Ride quality is surprisingly nice too especially being that this is more of a budget lift than anything.

I can't say I didn't cringe a bit watching you pull those Fox shocks out to replace them with Ranchos lol. I know you're testing them so i'll just be patient and see how they perform.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
LOL!! Don't get me wrong, I DO like Fox shocks but there are specific reasons why. Most people I talk to wouldn't have a clue why they think they're better other than they look cool, cost more and are a brand that everyone recognizes as being "good". Truth be told, the RS9000XL shocks we just installed offer more travel and therefore offer greater flex and being that they're adjustable, can be set to ride SMOOTHER than a set of Fox. Now, I would be the first to admit that there are downsides to them but really, only for my purposes. Most people, I would argue the would be happier with a set of these RS9000XL's especially for a daily driver.
@RedRockCrawlers
@RedRockCrawlers 5 жыл бұрын
Wayalife yeah I understand that. I agree for most people would be just fine a set of those ranchos. Are they steel body or aluminum? I couldn't tell
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
The Ranchos are steel. Basic old school hydro shocks with adjustablility. Great for daily driving and basic off road and very affordable. Where Fox outshines them in bombing across the desert or on really long stretches of rough terrain. In those situations, Ranchos will experience shock fade. Fox being monotubes will not due to the fact that they dissipate heat better and the fact that they have a separate nitrogen filled chamber that helps to prevent cavitation.

@wayalife

It's definitely on the tall side but with the JL having a 2" longer wheel base, it's kind of nice to have if only to regain lost break over angles. There is a penalty in center of gravity with it though.

Making it harder and harder to wait for next spring to get a JL! After running the JLX and the NY19 run how are you guys liking the shocks?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
LOL!! I've always liked RS9000's being that they're adjustable and that you can set them to where you want. If there is a downside, it's that what's nice for off road isn't always stellar for pavement and having to adjust them all the time can be a pain. This is why I choose a setting somewhere in between so that I can leave it as is.

I have a question, I have a 2008 jeep wrangler unlimited sahara with a 6 1/2" BDS long arm with Tom woods front & rear shafts,. Is it possible I can drop it to 3 1/2" long arm no more than 4 1/2". Having many problems with my lower back I guess comes with age lol, it's making it a little uncomfortable getting in & out sometimes. Thank you sir for this awesome video as well.

Holy cow, 6-1/2"?? That's way more lift than I would ever hope to run on any of my Jeeps. Hell, even my JK running 40's is doing it with our coil overs set to about 3-1/2". Needless to say, yeah, depending on what size tires you have, I would install shorter coils but you will most likely need shorter shocks and depending on how much slip you have in your drive shafts, you may need to have them lengthened.

@@wayalife Thank you so much. Well in 2009 I wanted a lift & bigger tires cause I wanted to experience of a new offroading adventure, it was my first jeep, took it to a shop where they convinced me that this will be it, but as years went by I learned more & more about the jeep & the game, watching videos, & then came to conclusion that I do not need this so high to have fun, invested needless of thousands throwing work at it & here I am now hoping to get something like your set up. I ran 40's on 20 wheels with 513 gears & e-locker with stronger axle sleeves, blew my rear 2 times, now I'm running 37s on 17 which turned out better but now hoping on lowering this big boy to a 3 1/2". Only if I knew then what I know now. I can't get rid of my jeep, it's my 2nd wife lol. Thank you so much for your advice & always love your videos man.

When did you change out the Rancho shocks for FOX shocks and why. There is no video of that. Which Fox did you buy?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
The Fox shocks came with the Dynatrac lift we were testing out before. They were specifically made for the coils in that kit. This lift is significantly taller - more than twice as tall and the shocks we're now running were made for them. Hence, why they're called long travel shocks.

@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
I was not done on the TJ nor on the JK. It's new to the JL and that's how they come from the factory and to help compensate for the weight of the gas tank being on the passenger side. It's actually kind of annoying being that you end up with a driver side lean instead.

That kit is missing many vital components.. Its more of a set of replacement shocks and coils for an already lifted Jeep. That may confuse some people who are new to this stuff. A 3.5" lift would need at least upper adjustable controll arms as well wouldent it? On top of the extra parts you pulled out. Also drive shafts?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
When we filmed this, I never say that this was a "kit", just that we were installing taller coils and longer shocks. However, as we clearly state in the video through the use of text here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6hzqdh9rLmsgmg.html it is now available as a complete kit. Drive shafts are not required but I would highly recommend them. Thus, why we also note with text that we have replaced ours here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r6hzqdh9rLmsgmg.html

Hi, Eddie. In a previous comment, I recall you saying that you didn’t need to change gears on the new JLs. Is that correct still? It’s just I recently put a 2.5” lift on my JL and added 35s as well. I really don’t mind the gas mileage, I mean it’s a wrangler. I still love it. However I saw in other video posts with the exact same mods and they’re getting 19 mpg at best. Mine is 13 at best. @wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
There are a few factors you need to take into consideration. First, are you talking about an MT or AT? Rolling resistance will account for more MPG loss than tire size. That being said, we were still able to average about 16 MPG even with our 37" MT's. Drive more conservatively and it would be more. Drive more aggressively and it's a bit less. This is of course assuming you have a 3.6L with an 8-speed auto.
@JLURBilletSilverMetallic
@JLURBilletSilverMetallic 5 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife Hi Eddie, thanks for getting back to me.. my scenario is a JLUR with a 3.6l and an 8 speed auto and the tires I was thinking about were the Milestar Patagonia MT's in 37 x 12.50 x 17 .. thanks again Bill
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
No problem. Those tires wouldn't be my first, second or even third choice but to each their own. That being said, an aggressive tread like that will have a LOT more rolling resistance and you will see a measurable decrease in MPG.

@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
What I don't like about Milestar or their Chinese made Patagonia tires is that up until about a year ago, NOBODY had heard of them. They literally started handing them out to every social media whore and their mother and all of a sudden, they're the best thing since sliced bread. Me personally, I prefer to buy tires that are made in America. This is a big part of why I run Coopers but I would totally run Toyo, Nitto and even Yokohama now being that all make their tires, right here in the USA. I know it seems silly to some but it matters to me and being that the price difference is so little now that the Milestar honeymoon is over, it really seems like a no brainer to me to go, made in the USA.

Wayalife there are kits out there for anything between 500 to even $5000. How the heck do you pick one? :)
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Well, what I can tell you is that ride quality is 100% subjective. And, based on my experience, you can spend $15000 on a kit and it still ride crappy. Being that budget is a concern, I personally would recommend that you buy a budget friendly lift kit like the Rancho Sport Lift. It'll give you what you are wanting and for about $600. I personally found it to ride exceptionally nice. Add the adjustable RS9000XL shocks and it'll be even better. If you're just wanting to run 35" tires, the Dyantrac 2" lift is a great choice too but it'll be about twice the cost.

LOL!! Since you couldn't tell from the expression on my face, I wasn't expecting to get as much height out of this lift. I thought we might get about 4" but not close to 5". I should note that the coils have settled a bit since then but it's still over 4". That being said, we've been in the process of testing out different lifts and if we installed a long arm kit, that would be the end of that being there's no turning back. However, since running this lift, I can tell you that we haven't found a long arm is actually needed at this height. While one would correct suspension geometry, our ride quality hasn't suffered as much as we would have though.

@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Fox are great shocks that look good and have brand that's been promoted well. In terms of design, they are a modern monotube shock and perform well. If that's all that matters to you, yeah, they're better. Now, if you're asking in terms of flex, well, these new RS9000XL shocks provide more travel and so in that way, they're better. In terms of ride quality, well, these RS9000XL are adjustable and can be set to however soft or firm as you want. The Fox are gas charged and offer only one setting and depending on what coils you have them paired up with, that can give you a nice or harsh ride. In terms of price, the RS9000XL are way more affordable. For daily driving, I would argue that the RS9000XL will give most people what they want except for a sexy name and look. Even on the rocks, they'll do well if not better due to their long travel. Where Fox will out shine them is if they're paired with a good set of coils as there will be no need for adjustments. Also, driving over long stretches of rough terrain, they won't experience shock fade the way old school hydro shocks (RS9000XL) will and this is because they are monotubes that dissipate heat better and have a separate chamber filled with gas to help prevent cavitation. So, it's all relative.

Ummm, they're a fraction of the cost and something I already had and worked just as well for this application? Nothing wrong with installing longer brake lines and I have on all my other JK's but only when needed. Also, to properly bleed the lines on a JL, you need to have a scan tool use the ABS system to do it. That's typically something only your dealership can do and that makes it even more expensive to do. Sure, you can get by without it but your brakes will never be quite the same.
