Jeep JL WRANGLER Lift Kit Installation RANCHO 2 Inch Sport Lift - A BETTER BUDGET BOOST

It always amazes me that there are people out there who would completely cheap out and buy a set of $180 coil spacers and shock extensions to lift a $30,000 to $50,000 Jeep JL Wrangler. I mean, I get that these people might be on a budget especially after making an expensive purchase like that but to spend that much money on a Jeep and then ruin its ride just to get a bit of lift - it just makes no sense to me.
Also known as a "budget boost", coil spacers will get your JL Wrangler sitting higher off the ground but they'll do so at the cost of your ride. Ultimately, you're still working with a set of really soft factory coils, ones that were never designed to carry the kind of weight you'd get from something like a heavy steel bumper and winch or a ton of gear packed in the back and with all of that weight sitting higher off the ground. Of course, shock extensions will allow you to keep your factory shocks but then, those shocks were designed to manage the weight of stock wheels and tires - NOT the significantly heavier weight of big off road tires and/or beadlock wheels and I would assume, that's the reason why most people are wanting to lift their JL in the first place.
The Rancho 2" Sport Lift is a $640 lift kit... you hear that? Just SIX HUNDRED and FORTY DOLLARS and it comes complete with new progressive rate coils, new RS5000X shocks with DRS and a host of other components that'll not only help you lift your JL Wrangler but do so in a way that will offer a much better ride, both on and off road. Heck, if you're lucky enough to buy it while Rancho is running one of their great rebate programs, you'll even be able to save an additional $100! Sure, this kit costs a bit more but really, it's just a bit and if you ask me, it's a much better way to give your JL Wrangler a bit of a boost and on a budget.
In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll see all that you'll get with the Rancho Sport Lift and just how easy it is to install on a Jeep JL Wrangler. You'll also get to see our initial testing of it and hear our impressions of it. We hope you enjoy.

Thanks to you and this video, it gave me some great ideas for my semi-mild JL build. I added this Rancho 2" Sport lift today and put 315/70r17's on my stock rims. They're 34.4x12.4 BFG KO2's so my Jeep still looks kind of stock but it has a lot more capability. Thanks again for the fantastic videos, keep up the good work!!

@wayalife 6 жыл бұрын
The Dynatrac lift is twice the cost and for a reason. I'd be lying if I said this kit rode as nicely as it. For how little this kit costs, I feel it offers a great ride and performs much better than a set of coil spacers and shock extensions.

Nice. Great install video. And as far as this lift vs. a budget boost, those will be great for the 3rd and 4th owners of these vehicles. Anyone who can afford a 50 thousand dollar Jeep new though, can afford 600 bucks for a proper lift kit.

@trailrunnah8886

Jon D valid point. My thinking though is that after investing 50k in a rig, one would also want to invest in quality parts. That's just me though.

Your videos are top notch, really like them, are these coil spring of lower spring rate then stock?
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 жыл бұрын
They are progressive coils as in, the top part of them is soft and then they progressively get firmer. Overall, they are firmer than stock but with the added weight of a heavy steel bumper, winch, large spare and gear, they hold up the weight better.

I LIVE IN GARDNERVILLE WOULD LIKE TO HAVE YOU DO LIFT KIT ON MY 2018 RUBICON JL INTERESTED ?
@LeoDodier
@LeoDodier 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Eddie, REALLY good video, it answered a lot of questions I had about my white JLU Rubicon (just like yours but no upgrades yet). I was wondering how the Rubicon suspension differed from the other JL's, and now I know. This weekend, I'm installing a front full width Warn bumper along with a Warn Zeon 10s winch, so I expect a small amount of front sag. I'm keeping my stock tires (for now), so should I leave the suspension as is, or add a front 1" spacers for now, or consider the 2" lift kit now? Thanks again. BTW, you have a great shop, is that your personal garage?
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 жыл бұрын
If you intend on keeping your JL stock, I might recommend installing 1" coil spacers to help bring the front end of it back up to level. If you think you'll be going taller in the future, I would just wait till then as it'd be a lot of work for just a small difference. Oh, yes, the shop is my back garage.

I have been contemplating which lift kit to go with, and this video helps to solidify my decision. I used Rancho shocks back in the day on my older 94 Ranger 4x4, and I think it’s time to come home. From what I am hearing, for about $740 (with the RS9000XL shocks) this is a great lift option, correct?

Check to see how close your front coils are sitting next to the bump stop towers. If the rubber isolators are not in the exact position they need to be, the coil could bow a bit and catch the lip of the bump stop cup.

Great videos. I like the Rancho 2in lift with the 9000’s but really only want to do a lift once. Having said that would you recommend the Dynatrac 2in over the Teraflex 2.5 with the falcon 2.1 shocks. I’ve also thought about starting with the Rancho kit and adding the Falcons later if I did go the upgrade route.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of TeraFlex being that all their stuff is made in China and based on personal experience, I've found the quality of their products to be cheap. Their joints blew out on me all the time, their shocks leak and break at the bar pins and even their mounts and track bars break. I've got lots of photos to prove all of it. Also, their 2.5" lift will yield over 3" of lift. Dynatrac is all made in the USA. Most of Rancho is made in the USA and what's not is made in Australia. That being said, this particular kit is only $640 and if you take advantage of the rebate they've got going right now, it's even less. In other words, it's hard to go wrong with it. The only thing you do need to be aware of is that it will yield over 2.5" of lift. The Dynatrac lift will ONLY yield 2" of lift. So, for me, it'd really come down to how big of a tire you're hoping to run. If a 35" tire, I would recommend Dynatrac. If 37", I would recommend the Rancho. If you want to upgrade shocks, I would recommend the RS9000XL as they are adjustable or Fox.
@5djc
@5djc 5 жыл бұрын
I’m on 35’s now and don’t plan on going bigger (JLUR). I don’t mind spending more. Last question. What would be option up from the Dynatrac in the 2-2.5 in range. Best ride and performance for the money even if having to add track bars and control arms. Thanks again for your time
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Dynatrac designed their 2" lift specifically with 35" tires in mind and to create the best possible ride. They did this by engineering their coils and shocks at the same time so that they would compliment each other - this as opposed to just providing coils and then offering whatever shocks to go with them like pretty much every other company out there. In the 2" lift range, I've not tested anything that would qualify as an "option up" but then, this is just one year into a 10 year vehicle and based on past experience, there might be something better in about 4-5 more years.

Thanks for more great how-to videos on the JL. We're buying a JL in the next month or so to go with our JKU so pretty excited to get to see the JL up close before hand. Are you plans with this Jeep to keep it closer to stock, or are you eventually move away from stock to say after market Axles (for example) like Currie or Dynatrac? Oh and by the way, I did go to your Amazon looking around as I believe in supporting great content like this. Sadly you didn't have an LT40x13.5R17 Cooper Discoverer STT Pro's, you sold me on those meats they're amazing (coming from Nitto's). How do you feel about the Raceline Forged beadlocks or the Hutchinson's beadlocks?
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 жыл бұрын
I really do appreciate your willingness to support us. I'm not sure why the 40x13.50 Cooper STT Pros were not on our page but they should be there now. Regarding wheels, I really like the look of Hutchinson but they tend to leak and the have a lot of back spacing. This can be a problem depending on how you run something as big as a 40" tire. Raceline are really nice wheels and you can't really go wrong with them. As far as our build goes, we'll continue to build it up as products become available and as we continue to break things.

How much front rake did you guys have on your JL? Finished the install for my rancho kit this past weekend. And for $800, i’m loving the 2in lift. I put a few car batteries to simulate weight of a winch and it didn’t sag the front end at all. Have about an inch of rake as it sits now so I add a 1/2” or 3/4” spacer up front. Cant complain with the shocks either, the rs9000xl feel much more controlled than the stock shocks. Rebound control is vastly improved.

LOL!! Would have installed something a long time ago if there were options available or at least, ones that we liked. Still, in spite of what you're seeing and what all the naysayers swore - that our tailgate would buckle and break within days of running a 37" spare, the tail gate is still holding up just fine. I think we're going on 6 months now too.
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 6 жыл бұрын
Wayalife The JL did improve the tail gate design. So I am not surprised that it is holding up. But I would not expect it to last forever. Kind of a shame Jeep doesn’t offer the HD tire carrier for them like they did for the JK. Although my guess is because teraflex or whomever built the JK one doesn’t have a JL version.
@wayalife
@wayalife 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, Mopar DOES make and sell a tire carrier reinforcement bracket. In fact, I had ordered one well ahead of EJS but it came in about a week after I got back. Running our 37's on the tailgate without reinforcement was more of a necessity than a choice but after seeing how well it held up in Moab, I decided to just return the Mopar kit. I should note, it's not my desire to keep carrying a 37 on the tailgate like this but not because I don't think it can't handle it. Of course, I can only go off of what I've been seeing and experiencing for myself so far.

May I ask what you feel would be a good lift for MOAB and Rubicon? I am considering a 3.5 or 4" lift for the city with 35" tires. But me and my friend are also starting to do off-loading and trails. He is more experienced than me :-) Love your videos!
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
What I can tell you is that 3.5"-4" is crazy tall for just a set of 35" tires. I would NOT recommend it. You can practically run 35's on a Rubicon without any lift. Even on this video, I ran this Rancho lift with 37" tires. At most, I would recommend something like this. If you go too tall, you will throw your center of gravity off and you will need to buy a lot more things to get your ride feeling acceptable.
@javier8ballplayer
@javier8ballplayer 5 жыл бұрын
So.. if I install this kit to my stock 2018 hp Rubicon I can run 37 inch tires and it would feel and ride like factory????? I know it will affect factory warranty but I'm more concerned about the ride cause here on Orlando Fl we don't rock crawl often unless you go north Florida.

For one, RS9000X shocks made for the JL Wrangler were not available at the time this video was filmed. For two, they would have increased the price point of this kit a bit more and the point of all this was to show a better way to give your JL a boost on a budget.

Eddie, I have watched all of your lift videos and I noticed you never install a aftermarket track bar. Doesn't that mean your axle is out of alignment left/right under the Jeep? Meaning the tires are out farther on one side than the other. I am keeping my JL Rubicon suspension stock but adding a heavy front bumper and winch so I plan to install some front spacers (not sure yet what height) to deal with the sage. Should I buy an adjustable track bar too?
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Up to 2 inches of lift, there is no need to install an adjustable track bar. While there is a shift, it's extremely small and really, not enough to matter. If you think about it, your axle is always off one way or another depending on how much you're carrying inside your Jeep. It's just the nature of the beast when it comes to track bars being that they're mounted on the frame on one side and on the axle on the other.

So if you lift a sahara or sport 2" to fit 35" tires. does that mean it sits as high as a rubicon?. I just bought a 2020 rubicon unlimited recon edition. And I love it. Came with 33's stock but I would like to move up to a 35. Would I have issues? I read I line that a Recon sits. 1/2" higher than a regular rubicon.
@wayalife
@wayalife 4 жыл бұрын
What allows a Rubicon to run bigger tires is that it has fenders that sit higher and that gives you bigger wheel well openings. While you can kind of run 35's, you will have rubbing issues especially on the trail without a lift.

In the 2" lift range, I would say that I liked this one the most. It was super affordable and provided a nice all around ride. Because MOST lift coils tend to yield MORE lift than what is advertised. In the case of these Rancho coils, we ultimately got a bit more lift up front and measurably more in the rear or at least, when compared to what we were seeing with factory coils and coil spacers. With a small lift like this, control arms and track bars really aren't necessary. If it were me, I would say to just install the kit as is and IF you feel the need to add in more caster, get the front lower adjustable arms to help you do that. Rear uppers would only be needed if you install an aftermarket u-joint style double cardan shaft and to set the pinion.

Okay, that being said, would you say that it happened when it was cold out? If so, this is something more and more people are starting to experience. Making sure you have your steering stabilizer installed and that it's in good condition should help. I would also give the drag link tie-rod end at the pitman arm a look for signs of wear. Rotational movement is normal but a shifting up and down or side to side is not. I have seen a few people with this point worn out and that was causing some of what they were feeling. Last but not least, give your track bar bolts a check and make sure they are tightened to 125 ft lbs of torque. Loose bolts here WILL cause what you are feeling and can even lead to true death wobble.

I do not see the advantages of a lift. Jeeps already have a high centre of gravity and they flip easily if hit from the side. I put 16 inch wheels on my stock Jk and it has improved the handling and acceleration. The centre of gravity is lower now too which helps on steep slopes when you are driving perpendicular to the steep angle. I regularly go off road with it over rocky sections with no issues. Been through deep snow on mountain roads too. The front suspension has less stress and wear on it too from the lighter tires. So please tell me what advatage a lift kit has?
@wayalife
@wayalife 2 жыл бұрын
A lift will allow you to run bigger tires and that will improve approach, breakover and departure angles. Ideally, you want only go as high as needed and if done right, your center of gravity will be about the same as stock too. That said, you should always do what you feel is best for your Jeep.

Some kits are more expensive just because that's what the manufacturer wants to charge. That being said, some kits like the one that Dynatrac makes comes with specifically tuned Fox 2.0 monotube shocks designed to work with coils that have spring rates made specifically for them. This as opposed to just giving you generic shocks to go with basic lift coils. That being said, I found this Rancho setup to work quite well and don't have a clue as to what "everyone" would say is so "unsafe" about it.
