Thank you! Just started the same job. Already had a ball joint press, but it was cheap one that's 17 yrs old. One tip I'll add to anyone else watching this. Unbolt the upper control arm, one nut and bolt and it gives you more room.

I used this procedure but i released the brakes hose all the way to the callipher. In the conection you have to slide the metal tube through the hole to release the hose. This allowed more movement that i needed since I used a press that didnt fit in that space. I also released the abs cable. Thanks for the video.

You don't start a cap screw with an impact, start bolts by hand, see so many so-called mechanics cross-thread bolts and then drive them in with impact and say they done a great job, then the next guy has to fix the hole .

I'm thinking I'm due to do this as I've just done subframe, sway bar links, camber links, rear arms, and to add to that found out the bumper support wasn't supporting the bumper anymore the bumper was supporting the support so had to fab a new one of those together as couldn't find the part 😅

Thanks for the vid. Unfortunately this method didn't work for me personally, I ended up scrapping 2 of the new bushings as the bottom arm of the tool pinched the edge of the bushing and warped it. Since I cut the rubber out of the old bushing and pressed it out, I was able to use the old bushing and the end of the press kit to hammer the new bushing in and used a rotor and some 2x4s as a base. I had to change out bearings and control arms anyways, so a couple extra bolts wasn't a big deal. If anyone else can make this work with the press, great, it is definitely quicker and easier.

Here's an update on my comment. We contacted Jeep and found out that the torque specs for the two bolts that secure the trailing arm / bushing to the frame is 81 lb. ft. Hope this helps.

The bushing kit shown in video I rented from Advance Auto Parts. It's not perfect as I wasn't able to get a cup on both sides of the bushing to press in. Without having 2 cups on either side of the bushing it makes it harder to press in straight. Worst case the new bushing will bend before the trailing arm gets ruined if it starts to go in crooked. I just took my time and was able to make it work. Another method I've used in the past was to heat the trailing arm up, have the bushing in the freezer and then tap it in. I try to avoid this method as I don't recommend having an open flame in close proximity to the gas tank.

@@WeakestofWeeks hi I managed to get one done omg what a bloody nightmare,,,, but then I moved over to the next one and heated it and tap heat and tap but I damaged the bloody rubber it came away from the bushing wall completely my fault I obviously used to much heat,, I also have 2 cracks in the rubber,,, such a shame is this gone or can I fill with sealant,, cheers John

I did the same procedure. 2 things to watch out for. 1. when you buy the bushings, don't buy the low-quality ones. I had them pressed in and they fell right out because the metal was so thin! 2. When you put it back together, carefully measure the positions, try to put both bushings (if you are doing both sides) to the same positions with respect to the body. So your alignment isn't messed up. Learned it the hard way...

Torque specs on the trailing arm bushing to body bolts is 81 ft lbs (or 110N.m). And in case anyone needs the bolt information for replacement: www.mymoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-hex-flange-head-bolt-mounting-6508511aa?c=Zz1yZWFyLXN1c3BlbnNpb24mcz1yZWFyLXN1c3BlbnNpb24tYW5kLWNyYWRsZSZsPTM3Jm49QXNzZW1ibGllcyBQYWdlJmE9amVlcCZvPWNvbXBhc3MmeT0yMDExJnQ9bGF0aXR1ZGUmZT0yLTBsLWw0LWdhcw%3D%3D

@@WeakestofWeeks we pressed in the opposite direction of the video. Will it make any problems? Thanks.
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it will cause any issues as long as you pressed them in to match how far the original ones were pressed in. Otherwise, the alignment could be off and would be hard to correct since there's not much to change the toe in and out for the rear.

On the other side of the trailing arm, the press is pushing on the rubber of the bushing isn't it? The camera doesn't show the other side
@WeakestofWeeks
@WeakestofWeeks 3 жыл бұрын
It was yes. Ideally you'd want a larger press to get cups on both sides but it is possible to have on just the rubber. I would rotate every so often so you dont tweak the bushing.

@@WeakestofWeeks I am in the exact boat, I bought a ball joint press that only has one cup big enough to fit, so I was wondering how safe it is to use the press arm to push on the rubber of the bushing. :) thanks for the reply!

I rented that exact tool kit shown in the video from Advance Auto Parts. They usually offer 2 different kits but you'll want the larger kit with more pieces. Just note it's a lot of money to "rent" the kit upfront but you get all of that money back once the tool kit is returned.
