Our 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport needed its tired engine rebuilt, so we figured why not give it a decent upgrade while we're at it? Of course, we wouldn't miss the opportunity to shoot time-lapse video of every step along the way and hit you with another amazing addition to our Redline Rebuild series! With help from our friends at RockAuto.com, we source a crankshaft and pistons from a different Jeep engine (4.2L) and stroke this XJ's legendary 4.0L straight-6 AMC engine to a slightly more powerful and torquey 4.6L.
Thanks to our sponsor RockAuto.com. RockAuto.com is an auto parts retailer founded in 1999 by automotive engineers with two goals: Liberate information hidden behind the auto parts store counter (by listing all available parts, not just what one store stocks or one counter-person knows), and make auto parts affordable so vehicles of all ages can be kept reliable and fun to drive. Visit www.rockauto.com/?a=HG-YT-21Q3 to order auto parts online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and have them conveniently delivered to your door. Need help finding parts or placing an order? The jeep Cherokee is one of the greatest cars ever produced. I own an 89’ limited 4.0L and it’ll probably get me another 300,000 miles. Such a pleasure to drive, sticks to the road like glue and can make it over almost anything I put infront of it. Love cherokees so much.

For what they were designed to do, they're wonderful engines. Much like the Chrysler Slant 6, they just run forever without much fuss - and now this particular one has been fortified with vitamins and iron! Very enjoyable as always *Davin* - can't wait to see what you tackle next. - Ed on the Ridge

those 4.0L jeep engines have their roots in the AMC 199 that was first used by Rambler in 1964. obviously certain revisions have been done, but the main architecture is the same. Which is why he was able to use a 258 crank. The Chrysler slant 6, the Ford 300, the Chevy stove bolt, and the AMC 258/jeep 4.0 are all amazingly durable and effective.

I guess I'm in the minority. I was head Jeep mechanic at a Chrysler/Jeep dealership back in the late 80's. This model jeep was declared the #1 most repaired vehicle by Consumer reports. They would pull in the shop and I could tell just by listening how much money I was going to make.

Not sure if you’re interested but a series where you take newer vehicles, break them down and discover, discuss and correct poor engineering oversights, would be unbelievably valuable.
