Cheep Cherokee returns and we do our first ever 4-wheel drive chassis dyno test to see what kind of power our stock 6 cylinder makes. Then, we'll show an inexpensive way to bore and stroke the engine to get more power out of Jeep's 4-liter straight-six.

These 6 cyl motors are fantastic. Not rocket ship power but wonderful torque and drivability. My old chap had a 4.6V8 P38 Range Rover and a 4.0 grand Cherokee (both 97 models) some years ago. The jeep trounced the rangey everywhere and in every way.

Not quite. The tooling was so freaking worn out that QC on the blocks was horrendous and the emissions would never meet stricter standards. Very similar to the end run of the Ford 300 six. Having said that both were wonderfully simple torquey engines whose replacements were garbage. The 300 six was the best gas engine Ford ever made and the 4.0 mated the Aisin transmission really gave Jeep a good reputation for reliability.

I don’t understand. Do the Dino with stock sized tires and that will get you a accurate reading on the Dino.. and the 4.0l is rated at 190 hp and a little more depending on the year on the engine. And try installing a lower gears on the differential to get back to factory power with the tire size and a lower geared transfer case for off-road since it doesent have enough “power”

98-99 are the most sought after Cherokees. 00,01 had the weak casting head 0331 or something like that. Would crack around 120000
@electronicsworkbench
@electronicsworkbench 3 жыл бұрын
@@fre0nx675 Pretty much correct. The 0331 head also had smaller exhaust ports. Could not open them up since the casting was so thin. You could go a tad wider but not taller. Due to that, even a turbo won't do much to improve a hole that can't flow any more than it could. This is why the 7120 ('91-95) and 0630 ('96-99) heads are the most desirable. They will bolt on to the '00-01 blocks. 7120 only lacks the Siamese exhaust port for 3 and 4 as well as the locating dowels. Slightly different shape to the intake port which seems to be the most re-engineered part of the heads over the 5 million 4.0L engines that were produced. www.enginebuildermag.com/2004/10/not-those-jeeps-again-the-facts-about-4-0l-cylinder-heads/

Really, you guys can't even explain the relationship ship of the Crankpin to the centerline of the crankshaft. Using your explanation the stroker would wind up with almost 8 inches of stroke. Pretty impressive for a block that's about 9" from the crank centerline to the head face. Stroke is determined by the off set of the pin to the crankshaft centerline. And in case your interested the first strokers were actually built by AMC power train engineers during the mid to late 80s.

With their budget one would think they would have a few bucks in quarters and spray it down at the car wash before putting it in the dyno. Nothing like sand and rocks shooting off the tires at 80 mph on the dyno.

Always scratch my head when people talk about horsepower in the same sentence as an L6. Not what they do well....they make torque. LOTS of torque! Stroking it was the perfect idea. Assume if they want horses they're gonna have to get some better valves and MUCH stronger springs in there to deal with the RPMS. Doesn't matter though, once built, it'll climb trees even if it won't drag race. Talked a buddy of mine into building his 292 (C10) and turbo'ing it. Thanks to Powernation, no less.

Proof a 4.0 will not leave you stranded. That thing was near death and still gave 5 dyno pulls

My 800cc 3 cylinder makes more HP and not too much less torque. About 85hp and 50lb/ft at the wheel.
