That kick is a great attack! Good for stopping the opponent from coming after you.

For the love of God, Sifu you gotta make a DVD series man! This is truly the best stuff out there. I hope I get to train with you one day or if you ever decide to expand please use Evans Georgia.

This is great...I have just had 2 lessons in JKD ..I am 57 and just love it. It is absolutely practical. I haven't got to the kicking yet but this will be invaluable. Nice pipes on the girl demonstrating too ...motivation for training!!

As HEMA guy and traditional european fighting and self defence enthusiast this reminds me of dans la rue savates chasse lateral bas. Good tutorial gives some insight for my taining on the said kick 👍

isolahti that’s fantastic as I’m a big HEMA fan. Of course, fencing was a huge influence on Lee and JKD too, so I’m not surprised you see the connection. Anyway, thanks for the input and for watching.

Maybe rather than retreat, lean back and blast the knee? This is what I was taught in American Combato (Jen Do Tao)

I had to sub after this quality video!!! One of the things that is underestimated is the speed of a straight punch - It can stop them or at the minimum pattern interupt. The Low front kick is even faster then the side kick and has the benefit of kicking with your hands forwards to strike or parry. Combining the lead jab with the low front kick is high percentage and so is a side kick so much of a muchness.

If you are attacked by someone wielding a knife and can't run away, I think the low sidekick could be your best option to initiate a counterattack. I may be wrong. Can you do a video on JKD's answer to knife attacks?

a lead straight punch follow by stepping forward and rising the lead knee up for a low side kick, this rising of the knee leans the upper body back for a low side kick and the distance with the feel of uncomfortableness. worse and uncomfortable is both mens being close and in a frontal position for a low side kick. i'm not implying that is a bad techniques, just that one is sacrificing many steps and or movements for a low side kick. the low round kick fits in with the three range. it makes up for enough room for a low round kick and yet it doesn't much throw back the upper body which helps the hand stay close to the opponents body for follow ups

Great stuff Sifu :) I've taught traditional martial arts for many years but have always been drawn to Bruce Lee's ideas of practical self-defense. These days my focus is more in line with JKD philosophy.

I have found that the principle; side kick from the side - Front kick from the front - helped my JKD get more efficient and overwhelm in sparring. What do you think sir about this principle? Do you think it is much of a muchness or do you agree the low front kick marries with the lead jab better then the side kick or do you put premium on the head pulling/blading of the body that the side kick does?

The Asian dude in the demo, is leading with his face aiming at the punch with his hands down. What’s that technique called. Funny to watch.

I was taught Sidekick from the side and Front Kick from the front like a lowteep.... The low Side Kick is easier to defend against with a leg pull assuming they havent over extended... I think if you angle like you showed and then Low side kick you have incredible high percentage results whereas the same principle as a JKD jab the front kick is quicker, more balanced and better at kneecapping them !!!

My only real concern with a side kick to the knee would be missing the target or slipping off and getting nailed with a lead hook or rear cross; especially under duress. If you miss, it kind of propels you forward a bit. How can I prevent/mitigate this? Thanks and great videos.

Great points. There’s always a risk of getting countered anytime you throw not just a sidekick, but any tool. To that end, “set point control” and timing are essential. The sidekick can be deployed expertly when its combined with generalship, jams, checks, fakes and draws. A lot of students make the mistake of just throwing the kick without taking care of the set up and recovery (tactical) aspects. Remember, no tool will fight for us. Finally, remember to snap the kick; whip it so that you have the range, power and speed without compromising your recovery at all. This alone makes the kick exponentially better. (Be careful practicing in the air that you take it easy though. Use a bag or other target for full speed and power or you could injure your knee). Thanks and best of luck. 🙏
