Andy Wallace (producer) knew what he was doing during the recording of "Grace" up at Bearsville Studios in Woodstock NY. There was a little room, tucked away in the corner. This room had a Telecaster all plugged in and ready to go, at all times (like a continuous live stream or what have you). Because he was aware of Jeff's spontaneity, he purposely set that little section of the studio up. Knowing Jeff could wander in there at anytime of the day. Whether it was 2pm or 2 in the morning, Jeff would wind up in there. He just would. This is one of the results of that little section of Bearsville, set up, specifically, for one Jeffrey Scott Buckley. Love it. Wish he never left that room. RIP my Brother. There will never be another Jeff; it is f'ing impossible. Peace.

There's another thing of note here. The guitar is in vestapol tuning, and Buckley's taking on songs written in standard tuning. So the setting is totally capturing Buckley's talent while he's working the song out. I'm not one to say I prefer all improvised music over prefigured music, it's usually the contrary. But there are certain musicians I make exceptions for, and Buckley's top of that list. He's on fire when the guitar's in this tuning because he's concentrating on his playing, and the innateness of the voice's brilliance shines through.

This is beautiful to know. Really. I often find that the details of an artists life, passed-on by their fans, are often the most vivid parts of whatever they wanted to leave behind. And it's not officially written down anywhere. I mean, it often is, but it's also always a puzzle isn't it? Owned by the people who whitnessed it, or knew about it, or heard about it... Which is how it's meant to be, because it's no-one's right to own that type of 'property'. It should be (at least partly) in the hands of fans, or better said; The people who have a genuine appreciation for what was left behind by the artist.

Johnny McAuley man, would you by any chance know the tuning of the guitar on this track? Sevastopol tuning can vary no? I’ve tried to transcribe it in standard but it’s extremely hard and I’m stuck! Such an amazing cover.

The only way to describe Jeff is 4 words: Pure love for music. This man is my hero, there's no "was" about it. He is the whole reason I make and play music today, he makes me want to pick up my guitar and play along with him and just sit there, completely lost in his music just as he was when he was on stage. Jeff you died before I was born but you are certainly the best artist of this generation, no doubt about it

This is far from a sickly commercial voice. There is a distinct sense of honesty in everything Jeff sings...and it's very apparent here. His phrasing is not to everyone's taste (and is not commercially viable) and is all the better for it. He simply inhabits evry cover he does.
@Fallingardor11 жыл бұрын
As amazing as Jeff's voice was, his guitar tone and style is just as original and distinct. A lot of current alternative and indie bands use his style. The first time I heard Grace and "got it" it was like discovering music for the first time.

My sweet Lord - This is one of the most underrated, woefully unknown covers ever made. Dylan's song has been lambasted for alleged misogyny, but I say his gritty, poignant look at male-female romance gets it right about each party's power and vulnerability. With a pliant voice worlds away from Dylan's nasal rasp, Buckley interprets the "Blonde on Blonde" classic by gradually raising his pitch, and it's lustrous and glassy by the time he speaks of his love breaking "like a little girl" in the song's moving refrain. His rendition is so sensitive and nuanced hat sometimes a single word, like "ache" or "break" gets a vocalization that evokes its meaning. Good grief is this gorgeous.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no Nobody feels any pain Tonight as I stand inside the rain Ev'rybody knows that baby's got new clothes But lately I see her ribbons and her bows Have fallen from her curls She takes just like a woman Yes, as she makes love just like a woman Oh, and she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl Queen Mary, she's my friend Yes, I believe I'll go see her again Nobody has to guess that baby can't be blessed 'Til she sees finally that she's like all the rest With her fog, her amphetamines and her pearls She takes Just like a woman, yes, she does And she makes love just like a woman Yes she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl But it was raining from the first And I was dying there of thirst So I came in here And your long-time curse hurts But what's worse is this pain in here I can't stay in here, oh baby, ain't it clear that I just can't fit I believe it's time for us to quit When we meet again Introduced as friends Please don't you let on that you knew me When I was hungry and it was your world Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do And you make love just like a woman And then you ache just like a woman But you break just like a little girl She breaks just like a little girl

Other songs on it are: Eternal Life; Lover, You Should've Come Over, and Dink's Song. These aren't quite the same as the official releases on Grace, and there are several other takes of some of the songs. It is probably my favorite bootleg even over any recorded live shows that he did. The recordings have some humorous parts where Jeff has some added dialogue at the end of each song. In the outro, he tries to do an Eddie Vedder impression that is absolutely dead on.
