Believe it or not, Alice in Wonderland wasn't about drugs but a writer pissed off about his university changing textbooks on math. Though there is no doubt the acid freaks of haight and ashbury had their own interpretation that still holds up today.

Didn't read all the comments, but back in the 50's & 60's Prescription Drugs (Uppers an Downers) were extremely prevalent. An ya didn't have to cross state lines to find a prescription. The Family Dr's were prescribing them for the Adult Female, particularly Wife's. Men useually were the only needed bread winners. An the Moms responsibility was the Children. Can ya imagine, Dad plants his seed 4 yrs in a row, an is off to work each day. An Moms got the kids, an Mom better keep the kids in line when Dad comes home, cause Dad needs his rest, or has stopped at the Neighborhood Tavern. An the Hallucinogenic Drugs were becoming a problem in Suburbia with the Teens, at the same time.

1967, the legendary Summer Of Love. Jefferson Airplane was ALL about drugs and the psychedelic movement. And this was actually one of the shortest big hit songs from that era, but packed a powerful punch. And yes, Grace Slick was one of the most hypnotic female singers of all time, and began her career as a model. Another great one from them is Somebody To Love.

She was every bit as good as Janis,. She had the vocal control of a Surgeon and the power of a Sherman Tank. I did learn a little trivia note, Just after the first bar she sings "And one pill makes you small" You not a slight smile on her face, despite her best efforts to hide it. She missed the beet and she knew right away by no one reacting to it that she was in the clear and the worst now behind her she was about to KILL IT. She was so young but Ohh so talented.

Very good point. This was aired live on the Smothers Comedy Brothers Hour, a big deal back then for a group like this. Being on national television was the only way to have your song reach the masses then, aside from the radio. And it was the only way you could appear visually. So when she made that early mistake and got away with it, her nervousness went away.

I adore Grace Slick. She has been called "The Queen of Acid Rock". Her best songs are "Lawman", "Eskimo Blue Day", "Rejoyce", "Crazy Miranda", "Sunrise", and "Silver Spoon". Before the Airplane devolved into Jefferson Starship, Grace and Paul Kantner did a couple albums together. "Blows Against the Empire" was the first album under the Jefferson Starship name. The main theme behind it was a science fiction story about hippies stealing a starship looking for a new planet. It was nominated for a Nebula Award. Grace also made 4 solo albums: "Manhole", "Dreams", "Welcome to the Wrecking Ball", and "Software". Please do more Jefferson Airplane (ignore Starship).

Best sing of 1969. Grace Slick is the bomb. It’s psychedelic. She says it has nothing to do with drugs. She’s an artist and she paints scenes with white rabbits and scenes from Alice in Wonderland. She said she was once invited to the White House to have lunch with Pat Nixon, the 1st lady.she had planned to slip LSD in Mrs Nixon’s drink. She went to the same college as Mrs Nixon and graduated the same year. They didn’t know each other and when they found out who she was , they disinvited her. She sang White Rabbit at Woodstock in 1969. Grace was a hippie and she said they didn’t want a hippie to lunch.

This is funny watching your reactions! The lyrics are of tripping on LSD or mushrooms. Even Led Zepplin is very much in the tripping era, the doors, pink Floyd, Yes, eary Genesis etc. A lot of the instrumentals are meant to carry one away. Sit back when not on the air and let yourself soar.

Psychedelic trip through Alice in Wonderland. Grace Slick the best female vocalist in rock ‘n’ roll. She was made for it a belting, haunting sound.

This is actually the first psychelic song that was played in the radio waves at those times and yes Alice in Wonderland's dipper meaning was about the adventures of the mind when high in drugs💊💉🥴🤪

You are quite correct. "Jefferson Airplane" got the name from the term for a split paper match used to finish the tiny butt end ("roach") of a joint (they rolled them skinny in those days). The Airplane did a lot of LSD and related drugs-- the top psychedelic band of the time. People would get high and listen to Airplane, especially the "After Bathing At Baxter's" album, along with others. Of course my knowledge of this is entirely hearsay. (I am a mere boy of 68.)

So, I only recently joined your channel and I am slowly going through your older posts... But I am Very glad you reviewed music from the 60's... Even though I was raised in that era , I still push myself too to listen to all kinds of music.. I love your channel, keep up the good work!
