Talk Overview: Obesity is a highly heritable medical condition, with 70-80% of variations in body weight explained by genetic factors. In the 1990s, Jeffrey Friedman and his colleagues were the first to demonstrate the genetic basis for obesity when they identified and cloned leptin, a hormone secreted by fat tissue, as the responsible factor for maintaining normal body weight. Friedman’s research has played a major role in our understanding of human obesity and the hormonal pathway that controls food intake.
Speaker Biography: Jeffrey Friedman is a Professor at the Rockefeller University and an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His work on leptin and body weight regulation has been key for our understanding of how genetics control human obesity. Friedman, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has received numerous awards for his research, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award and the Shaw Prize for Life Sciences and Medicine.

So, from the concluding remarks, the core problem causing obesity isn't genes but defects in genes. No? What causes the defects?

Tobias Brown Hi, I am not an expert on the topic, I just happened to be working on a mathematical model regarding leptin, part of my PhD. In fact obesity is not simple to single out, I can give you several papers. Mainly, this is one of the hypothesis, called the set-point hypothesis. The second called the settling point hypothesis is that the environment plays a central role, that is to say, your eating habits. None of this is definitive, those are different ways to see a problem, but no single and unique solution. Even in the case of the genes, I am not quite sure that just defects could cause obesity. Obesity in some cases is just the body doing its job, storing energy. I hope that helps. Just keep in mind that leptin is just one way to see some cases of obesity, not the panacea. Further, there is still studies on the way.

In some cases, it could be a series of recessive genes, right? Don’t we all have little mutations happening all the time? So many factors could affect mutations in your genetics.

I don't understand : If when we are fat (overweight) we produce more leptin which regulates our appetit, which say us "stop eating', why then overweight people stay fat ?
@praisedone5456

Because the signalling mechanism of leptin doesnt work correctly in those patients. --> either bacuse they have mutations in the genes for leptin which is quite rare, but as friedman pointed out --> even if the leptin hormone is stable in obese people there might be other problems in the signalling pathway as the receptor not working correctly.

He explains in another video (I haven’t finished this one yet) that people who are obese can have lots of leptin but are still hungry because of leptin resistance at the receptor. And there are some obese who don’t appear to have enough leptin too. Wouldn’t it be nice if it was tested for so that those who were affected would actually have at least some awareness of it?

I didn’t know that “alcoholism” can be inheritable. A kid can be born wanting to drink??...kinda makes me question his credibility

Yes, a baby will crave budweiser instead of titmilk. No dumbass, a baby wont be demanding bottles of whiskey. Addictions are heritable. One simple google search will provide you mountains of research on this subject.

No, basically some people are more likely to develop an addiction if they try it, due to genetics. It's not that people are born wanting to drink. Hopefully this helps! Also Patrick Bateman, answering someone's question doesn't have to involve belittling them. Grow up
