In retrospect, this was a pretty epic and well played match from both sides considering the conditions and it being in two sets.
I enjoyed most of the matches between these two because their defensive and athletic abilities at their best were simply incredible to watch, and I think this might be the match between these two where both were pretty close to their peak levels. Jelena did not hit too many winners, but her defense was at its best here.
Shame that Elena just got so mad at herself and the conditions at the very end, this was probably the best match she played the entire tournament and could have definitely won this with slightly more intelligent and patient play. Other than Suarez, this was probably the easiest grand slam semifinal opponent she ever had. What a waste. Ah well, at least we got lots of nice rallies here.

Even when going for the line, Jankovic's shots looked so secure. I think it was her incredible footwork, always got herself into such good positions for every single shot

It still gets me 14 years after the fact. I woke up in the middle of the night to watch this match and got my poor, little 11 year old heart broken. Elena had a lead in both sets and she was clearly playing some good tennis. This should have been hers, it would have been if things went slightly different. Also, 42 unforced errors is quite harsh. Almost no error is an unforced error when you're playing in such a strong wind against a backboard like JJ.

I agree with u on some points. But I wish Elena would have take a bit more risk against Jelena. The last thing you want to do is to get in a rally against Jelena. I feel like if she was a bit more bold she would have won it. She should play Jelena the way Serena did in the final. Serena kept the ball short.

@@secrets.295 Serena also had a serve that helped her dominate most of the points in her service games. Elena had to build the majority of points on her serve from a neutral position at best, so that added extra pressure on her. JJ was just a bad match-up for her. Elena could have tried to be ultra aggressive but that wasn't her game anymore and it would have lead to even more errors. No, I think on a less windy day and with a bit more consistency, Elena could have pulled it off by not going for too much on her forehand and overhitting.

I remember how disappointed I was with Elena in this match. Not that she played terribly but just with not the right intensity or concentration needed for the occasion. Considering the sequence of players she beat at the Olympics, this seemed like an anticlimax for sure. To be fair to Jankovic she played a very patient and steady match and she played an excellent final against Serena, just coming up short.

So diplomatic. To be fair Jelena had to hit some incredible gets and against most anyone else Elena would have won for sure.

I could see Elena was playing safe tiny a bit. It's understandable sometimes. But against a player like Jelena, she should have ended the point as quickly as possible. You dont want to get in a rally against her

@@chriscze6153 Her anticipation was fantastic but you can see in this match and agains Jankovic in general how predictable her hitting patterns were. She didn't use any angles to try and move Jankovic acutely out-wide and no dropshots. There were so many times when she simply refused to move forward too. It's basically the story of Dementieva's career - not raising her game when it really mattered.

Thank you for finally making the highlights that this match deserves. I understand that going over this one must have been painful to you and that's why you deserve twice the credit for doing so anyway. JJ in general was a bad match up for Elena and the windy conditions didn't help her game either. I'm pretty sure she would have challenged Serena had she been able to reach the final. As for JJ, I really think that this was her best defence- and movement-wise, though I like her game and mentality from Beijing, Stuttgart and Moscow a little bit more. In any case, both players were the icons of a thrilling and competitive era. Also I wanted to ask you to consider covering the final too. There are some decent highlights of it but I'm sure you can do a better job than any of these authors because that's what you always do. After all, it was a fantastic match (even though it didn't end the way I wanted it to) and I think it would bring proper closure to this USO 2008 mini series. Of course, no problem if you don't want to, you have already done more than enough and brought me back so many great memories!

You are so kind, thank you so much. The most common complaint I get about my videos is they're too long, but if a match is a good match, then I figure a highlights video is a good place to put all the good stuff (and the bad stuff too when important). As for the USO 08 F, I don't have that match, and I haven't had the funds to purchase any new matches for a few months now. Since I haven't bought any new matches for a long time, right now I'm working with what I have from the backlog. But if I do get that match I will consider posting it - since Serena is retiring I wish I had more of her matches. Right now the only ones during the USO series I have are the 2006 LA SF against JJ and the 2004 LA QF against Zvonareva, but both of those have lots of highlight reels already.

and it wasn't that hard to do the edit of this match - I've had 14 years to process what would have been my favorite storyline of her career by reaching a second final at her best major, scoring her first (and probably would have been last) top ten win at a major since 2005, and reaching a major final with me as an active fan. I just enjoyed the match for what it was LOL

@@chriscze6153 that's exactly what I love about your videos, so no complaints there from my side! I also always have so much fun when I see that you included all the drama, challenges and "WTA fuckery" moments in your highlights 😅 Oh I get it... Anyway, this final already has a couple of highlights versions so buying it would probably be a waste of money. I do feel sad that Serena is retiring though. I mean it's time for her to do so but it feels like an official end not only of a spectacular career but also of an entire WTA era. In that light, I have to mention how well she played on the 2008 USO... Her matches against Venus in the quarterfinal and JJ in the final were classics.

I hated when Lena had to play Jankovic/Wozniacki/Radwanska. This was one of the most disappointing matches of Lena's career.
