Elena saves match point on the way to reach her fourth major semifinal and third at the US Open. This match was pretty up and down from both, but the third set was pretty good overall and thrilling in moments.

This match even though LIndsay lost was one of the matches where her speed was faster than it ever had been and she was in the best shape of her life. SHe managed to stay with one of the best pure athletes on the tour at that time for 3 sets and her loss wasn't one of being tired, Dementieva just came through in the clutch.

Dementieva might be the most underrated player of her generation. Such an athlete and so talented. One of the purest ball strikers. If she could’ve gotten her ball toss and serve together she would’ve won multiple slams. That is the only thing that hindered her. She made up for it in ground strokes. That battle of the forehands at 6:15 had my jaw on the floor. I miss this era of tennis.

Yup.... That's right.....I think so many talented players at that Era made her odd out in recognizing as a very talented player or competitor..... Actually ED has given tough fight with everybody she had played....

I agree with everything you said. Plus, she reminds me of Venus is that she’s tall, but has superb movement. This match is really fun to watch. Davenport can strike that ball better than Dementieva, but she certainly didn’t possess the athleticism.

Davenport recently mentioned on a Podcast that this match is her most hated defeat, beside of her defeats during a Major final. She felt embarrassed she lost a match, after having a match point during a Major tournament again. Her lose against Venus in Wimbledon was painful, but this lose hurt her more.

I totally forgot that....you're right, two losses in a row at majors after having match point. To be fair she did not play a good match against Elena and during the first and third sets was often at a lower level. She was lucky to even get to that tiebreaker because Elena hit so many errors herself. But yeah I don't think Lindsay considered Elena to be a serious opponent and sometimes it got the best of her.

Perhaps Elena is one of the greatest players to never win a grand slam. She definitely had the weapons, I wonder if it was her mental game that was her weakness. Oh, and a terrible serve.

Elena really picked her game up compared to the earlier rounds. Her serve was still iffy but she was sharp AF off the ground and some of her retrieving was fabulous as usual. Also, I think this is my favourite Elena look.

She had never played Safarova before, only played Chakvetadze the one time (I saw their match at AO, also nothing special and Anna hit herself off the court), and probably still had the AO loss in her mind against Patty. I think against Lindsay she was the underdog and had less pressure so she played a lot better. Very mental game this is...

@@chriscze6153 I agree. She often rose to the occasion when everyone expected her to flop, and sadly vice versa.

First set is the best set I've ever seen from Elena. 9 winners, 5 errors and 0 DOUBLE FAULTS!!! Still can't get it how Linsay didn't win any major in 2004 and 2005. She was the most consistant player back then.

Two of the best ball strikers to have played the game. What a great match. I truly believe Elana could have been number one if she had a better serve. She was a fantastic athlete and mover, with amazing groundstrokes. Maybe she is one of the greatest players not to win a slam. However, we should praise Elena for her hard work and dedication to the pursuit to improve as demonstrated by her improved serve towards the end of her career. I remember watching her play Serena in the semis at Wimbledon and it was amazing to see how she had significantly improved her serve, hitting all the spots and sorting the toss. She was so close to winning that match.

Great match from Elena. She didn't play well in the first round but her level increased over the matches. It's too sad she lost against Pierce in the semis after a very good level in the first set. I remember that Davenport Said after this match that it was very difficult to return Elena's serve because no one knows what to expect: it could be a great serve or a dead leaf falling 🤣🤣

This was amazing match and was followed by another with Pierce. Both matches some of the best pure hitting who'll see. Interestingly Pierce seemed to be able to do more damage to Dementieva than Davenport even though Lindsay probably hits the ball slightly harder shot per shot. I think Mary probably had a stronger base and was able to direct the ball better into the corners and slightly more rake on the ball moving away from Dementieva.

I was at the day session…which had been pretty underwhelming Pierce beating Mauresmo and a boring 5 set men’s match …as we were leaving someone offered us tickets for the night session which I was eager to take but my friends were done so I decided against it and…will forever regret that decision as I missed out on this amazing mess :(

she had much better opportunities vs. Myskina and Kuznetsova in the RG and US open finals the year before and got slapped around. More than likely she would have served 10+ dfs and lost in straights to Kim.

Great dress , and very sharp ground strokes in this match. Set up points well and actually put the ball away. BUT I GENUINLEY do not understand how this girl never learned how to hit a serve. She had one of the worst serves I have ever seen. And if she was smart she would’ve fixed it at some point. Not much better than Erranis

I have a lot of her matches - if you check almost any of her highlight videos I have from 2000 to 2002 you can see her first serve was pretty decent then, she could get 2-4 aces a match. But she always had a hitch and never a great action, and ultimately she injured her wrist and arm during those years, so we ended up getting the famous sidewinder for a few years.

At least with Errani she was 5 foot nothing so I can see why her serve had no pop but Elena was 6 ft tall, she had NO excuse except injury.

Her serve was definitely much better in the 2009-2010 period, it was a lot more "textbook" during that time. But alas, she fixed it a bit too late
