My 13 yr old son has struggled with eczema from a young age. We took care of it by keeping him clean and moisturized, but now that he’s 13 and stubborn, we have had a few flair ups. So, for the past two weeks, we have been fighting eczema herpeticum and staff infection. I feel so much for him.

I'm so sorry that you're going through that. Has he seen a doctor to get started on antiviral meds?

@@jenfugo antiviral and antibiotics. Staff was resident at first but they upped him, and he is clearing up now. The antiviral seems to be working, but it came back after his first round. He’s now a few days into his second round. We’ll see, but I’m just worried about what it means for his future. How’s it going to affect sports, school, dating, etc…?

@@Koitus36 I have eczema and had this virus over 9 times now. Seems to happen at least once every year especially when I am anxious, stressed or my environment drastically changes like the weather here where I live. Your son is very lucky. The doctors I visited always misdiagnosed it first calling it shingles and then just a bacterial infection even though I wasn't responding to the strongest dose of antibiotics. I only just got the proper diagnosis last year because I kept insisting on getting swab checks (no they never did it before). Once you know what medications to take (now I use famciclovir) and you are aware of how the virus feels, all you have to do is take the tablets as soon as you notice the symptoms, rest, keep the area dry (viruses and bacteria love warm and humid surfaces) and use an ice pack to clear it up. The symptoms I usually get are fever, red swelling on the skin that eventually becomes bumpy like a cold sore (has a hot or burning sensation), skin twitching, fatigue and sometimes blurry vision and confusion. The tingly/twitchy skin is the biggest red flag and the red swelling usually happens in the same areas. Before I had to fight off the infection for weeks at a time with multiple doctor trips but now it just takes a few days if I don't notice the symptoms quick enough.

I have eczema herpeticum and at first I thought it was just eczema and my dermatologist put me on prograf, however using prograf compromises my immune system I believe and I’ve been using it around my mouth for over 7 years

So everytime I have an EH breakout my mouth is covered in the virus yellow oozing puss. My question is what should I do to maintain my eczema should I keep using prograf or find an alternative route

How do I find out what in particular originally caused the skin conditions? For example I have hypothyroidism, which automatically comes with high cholesterol levels, high blood sugar, and I have just entered the phase of menopause. I had great skin until my hypothyroidism was diagnosed. But it could have emerged so late in life that menopause really could have been the true reason. If I could find out the truth then I feel like I would be able to treat it with the best results. I have had this for several years now and I still haven't found a good product yet. I am so miserable now that I don't even leave my house now. #desperatelywastingmoneyandgivingup
