🤠 No, I was on the edge of my seat until the last episode when I binge watched all 8 episodes in two days back when it streamed for the first time on HBO. I can't help thinking how things might have been different when Rust first talked to the guy mowing if only the angle of the sun had been shining on his scarred face instead of being backlit behind him and in Rust's eyes. Wow!

Every time I watch this it gets better, richer, deeper. The two lead performances get more miraculous. The writing gets more layered and complex. It's a pilgrim's journey within a tale of redemption within a conspiracy drama within a buddy cop story within a serial murder mystery. Like that spiral symbol, it just keeps spinning.

The Yellow King and Carcosa are from a series of short stories written by Robert W. Chambers back in the 1890's. Those stories heavily influenced H.P.Lovecraft and led to the creation of the 'weird fiction' horror genre. Rusts monologues on existence were influenced by Thomas Ligotti's book "The Conspiracy Against the Human Race". Ligotti is a well known weird fiction writer who was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and Chambers. Talk about circles. Also, as far as gritty Louisiana based crime novels, you can't do much better that James Lee Burke and his Dave Robicheaux series. Almost all of them take place in and around New Orleans and Iberia Parish (Dave works as a detective for the Iberia Sherriff's office), with some supernatural elements as well. This was one of the best seasons of television I've ever seen.

The name "Carcosa" is technically from _An Inhabitant of Carcosa_ by Ambrose Bierce, which Chambers borrowed for his stories.

Chambers is the same dude who wrote the story about the "lost city of Ys" right?? or was that one of his inspirations? I know there's a connection between Ys and The Yellow King but i cant remember it off the top of my head. Like, i forget if Ys was supposed to be ruled by the yellow king or if it was his rival or something like that - but the story is basically about this ancient kingdom that was protected by a giant wall/dam that held back the ocean waves from swallowing the city because it had been built long before the rising of the oceans and so the wall had been built to keep the city safe. but there were floodgates that could be opened and the only key belonged to the princess of Ys and she was like... seduced or robbed or something and the key to the floodgates was used, crushing the city beneath a tidal wave.
@hoon_sol

@@LiquidAwesomePersonified: I wrote a longer response, but it sadly got interrupted by KZfaq shenanigans; long story short: - Ys is a mythic city off the coast of Brittany that was supposedly swallowed by the sea, and has been referenced in literature since at least the 15th century. - Chambers wrote a short story called _The Demoiselle d'Ys_ as part of his collection called _The King in Yellow_ (which is referenced in the show), but that's not the title you seem to recall. - A children's book by the title of _City of Ys: A Traditional Breton Tale_ was published in 2020, so perhaps that might be what you're thinking of. - The king of Ys was the mythical Gradlon, whose legends date back way longer than Ys itself, but as you can tell from the above there's not really any connection between him or the King in Yellow. - In the most common accounts, the city of Ys was not built before the rising of the oceans, but was built on low land knowingly, with a dike to protect it from inundation. - Gradlon's daughter Dahut, who in some accounts is the one the city itself was built for, is generally depicted as being unruly and engaging in excessive lustful and frivolous behaviors, like drinking too much and a lot of promiscuity. She steals the key to the dike one night because of a lover (the exact reason why varies), and then unlocks the floodgates because she's drunk and/or by mistake. The city is flooded, killing everyone except for the king and his daughter, and he is then convinced by some supernatural saintly voice to throw her off his horse.

@@hoon_sol second reply - because youtube - no i never read that 2020 book so i cant possibly be thinking of that, i think i might have just mixed stuff up that i had read 20yrs ago... but im positive that Chambers was the story i read to do with Ys, because, well, i literally asked "Didn't he write that story about the lost kingdom of ys??" lol and he did. But i very well may be confusing his story with another old variant of the tale from who knows where.

The Carcosa caves are so upsetting, the show is really well done, I had to only watch one episode at at time or I’d get all aggro. I really like that the main exploration is of these two incredibly flawed men grappling with toxic traits that they’ve pretty much forced on themselves. At the end we finally see Marty break down and show weakness in front of his family, and we see Rust admit that there might be more to existence than nihilism. I’m really glad the show runners gave us that.

Aww, you cut out the last poignant lines: Rust: “I tell you Marty I been up in that room looking out those windows every night here just thinking, it’s just one story. The oldest.” Marty: “What’s that?” Rust: “Light versus dark.” Marty: “Well, I know we ain’t in Alaska, but it appears to me that the dark has a lot more territory.” Rust: “Yeah, you’re right about that.” Rust insists that Marty help him leave the hospital, and Marty agrees. As they head to the car, Rust makes one final point to his former partner. Rust: “You’re looking at it wrong, the sky thing.” Marty: “How’s that?” Rust: “Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light’s winning.”

To me, living in Europe, True Detective season 1 looks almost like a video series promoting tourism into US and especially Louisiana. Sure, there is Baton Rouge and all that French and Creole culture. But there is also urban and suburban decay, Southern gothic, forgotten histories, Civil War remnants and weird fiction to the tone of Ambrose Bierce and Robert W. Chambers which this series makes look almost post-apocalyptic (in the philosophical sense).

It was fun watching you enjoy this layered story as it unfolds and was a great reminder of this amazing series. I will always cheer that Marty kills the child abuser and Cohle helps him cover it up, and also makes sense that would be investigated/tested if both of them don't have matching stories. Marty hated Rustin for his wife but knew Rustin saved him from prison/career end covering for him. I don't remember the circle references you spotted maybe I need a re-watch :)

When Rust goes in for the interview, he asks for beer and starts drinking, which makes any of his statements inadmissible. Then, he keeps asking to see the new file. As soon as he gets to see the file and sees that the cops don't have anything worth his time, he leaves immediately. His whole purpose of allowing himself to be interviewed was to get at the file. Marty doesn't know the whole story at that point, but as soon as those cops tell him they've already talked to Rust, Marty *immediately* says Rust was basically interviewing them instead of the other way around, and he was right.

Hey Jen; I think you should sample a few flicks from the Film Noire genre - prior to 1970, when it was renamed at the Cannes Film Festival, it had been known as Crime Melodrama - 1940s and '50s crime/cop/whodunnits always in black and white, usually at night and/or dimly lit scenes, and always the darker side of humanity led to it's referenced as 'Film Noire'. I recommend starting off with a classic, and Oscar Award winner like SUNSET BOULEVARD (Paramount, 1950) to see how you like this genre - then let your patreons steer you.

Agree. Breaking bad was excellent but there were times that the same ground was covered over and over- namely that Jesse would find a reason to break off from Walter then somehow they end up back together for some reason. You can't do that but once or else it borders on unbelievability. This series is the best ever produced on television. Everything about it is perfection.

Excellent reaction and review at the end. I completely agree with your point about the crime being a vehicle for the real story, which is light vs dark. To me, Cohle and Errol Childress feel like agents of light and dark fighting some sort of eternal battle. Cohle can hear Errol speaking to him in his head when he's making his way through the temple, which is why we see that odd shot you mentioned of just Cohle's forehead. He hears Errol clearly, as does the audience, which is why the audio becomes clearer, and why Cohle looks so confused. And he calls Cohle "little priest" multiple times, which feels almost like their "souls" have been fighting this battle forever under different identities, and Errol knows it. To drive it home, when he stabs Cohle, he says "take off your mask." It took me a second viewing of this show to really understand that deeper story.

I watched this with a friend, and when Marty asked Rust if he was holding back when they fought, I nudged my friend and said "That is totally us." The show gets into general philosophical, existential discussion, but with a main focus masculinity, what it means to be a man, the faults and toxic traits but also the positive beautiful things, like how quickly they moved on and worked together years after a major personal implosion. Cole is either deep in his work or floating halfway between realms and Marty is a good, hardworking cop who in the end is in it for the right reasons, but his personal life is in shambles and he never quite makes that connection, often using anger as his outlet and blaming the people around him. It's a nice, realistic character study on the subject that doesn't come off as heavy handing or condescending. In fact it's the opposite, it's a meditation on how complicated, chaotic and confusing life can be sometimes and that almost no single person falls into stark black/white categories. Humans and our relations to each other and our own selves are pretty muddy and messy.

Hello Jen. I have to say you're a very intuitive observer. As much as you picked up on in this first go-round (and you picked up a lot), I urge you to watch this season again and again and again. Maybe watch it with close-captioning on. I found that I discovered more as I re-watched these episodes. It is dense and layered which makes it a perfect vehicle for watching many times.

Maggie's move was the only play. Rust valued himself by his possession of women; his wife, his daughter, his mistresses. Rust would always forgive himself, and demand forgiveness from her, but she knew he would never forgive her. His possessiveness was too strong for that. So she leveraged him out in a way she knew he would never reconcile. He wouldn't even want her after that. He'd always think of her with hypocritical disgust like it was her fault they couldn't work it out. Also, you'll probably get a lot of comments saying 'skip the second season'. I think season two is also very good, but didn't play well after season one because it was so different. People were hungry for more Rust and Marty and got something completely different. If the season two material had been presented in any other show or at another time I believe it would've been received much better.

When Chilldress does the British accent after watching it on his tv it seems out of place to most people. I felt it was the writer's way of displaying that sure, he's an inbred psychopath but he was also very clever and had the ability to go with the flow and avoid detection for all those years. Also in that same scene he says to his female counterpart "Tell me about Grandpa again" and if you pay attention she begins describing being raped by her grandpa. My biggest question that I'll dying wondering about is the scene in Marty's daughter's room where the dolls are arranged in a rapey formation,; where did his kids see that?? Where was their inspiration to depict Barbie that way?? I need answers so bad lol.

It is kind of meta, but when they talk about "time being a flat circle" and how all the events will happen over and over again. What they are talking about is the show/series itself, being on dvd or blu-ray (the flat circle), or a hard drive. Every time someone new watches (or rewatches) the series, all the events happen over again. And people will keep watching this series for decades to come and Rust, Cole, and all the others will be back in the office getting interrogated again and again, the killings will happen again and again. Death is not the end, because someone will always start watching the show again. For the characters in the series they will be stuck there redoing the events again and again and again. Forever. Forever reliving with all that pain and suffering just for our entertainment. The main killer, Childress, at the end says he "wants to ascend. To escape the flat circle." which means he thinks(thought) that if he killed enough he could escape into our world and be free of the loop.

The tension in the last episode was so real. But a lot of people were disappointed with the finale when it initially aired (if you can believe that). I always maintain that True Detective made you think like an actual detective, where every throwaway line, every gesture, and every entry in a scrap book was a clue that could potentially break the case. Also, everyone was expecting the Yellow King to be some Hannibal Lector-level villain. Consequently, they were disappointed that Childress was some "hick man-child." I was perfectly fine with it.

Also. In episode 1 Marty dismisses all of Rust's sixth sense feeling about locations. In episode 8 he accepts them as near facts. And I too would have liked to see this dynamic continue, with Marty making simple connections obvious right before him and Rust gluing the both of them in on general area and direction with seemingly random observations delving deep into high strangeness. But this is what made this season great. Nic Pizzolatto had the idea, but Matthew McConaughey also put in some serious work to flesh out his character. Without this latter contribution, this would have been like the 2nd season.

But it didn't work, he liked the series so much that he got the 4 chapters and just at night a friend came, told him about the series and went to sleep. Gripping stuff, the show and the reaction. 👍👍 I'd like to bring to your attention the series 'Mindhunter' (2017-2019), imo the best tv series in the last 10 years. It is a psychological crime thriller showing the beginnings of behavioral profiling of serial killers in the USA, to help with ongoing cases and unsubs (unknown subjects). "In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters." It is very much grounded in real-life, the way True Detective is. Two main driving forces behind Mindhunter are director David Fincher and living legend John E. Douglas, a retired FBI special agent and unit chief. He has interviewed dozens of infamous serial killers and caught and/or helped to catch many. Light vs. dark. 34:43 Lair shout-out. ♥ 40:13 Time to reflect calmly, among other things.

Jen, you seem to do well with these gritty crime dramas. Woody Harrison stars in Oliver Stones "Natural Born Killers" somewhat based on a true life killing spree. You'll probably really like it. Just a thought, you might want to give it a look. Here as always...Eric

@@e.d.2096 Nice! Right before Jen posted this, I was already engaged in my favorite Friday night show, "S.W.A.T." Other than that, more of the same old daily drama; warm days and cold nights. I'm managing to stay positive lately, or so far at least. . .

Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.

They worshipped, so they said, the Great Old Ones who lived ages before there were any men, and who came to the young world out of the sky. Those Old Ones were gone now, inside the earth and under the sea; but their dead bodies had told their secrets in dreams to the first men, who formed a cult which had never died [...] hidden in distant wastes and dark places all over the world until the time when the great priest Cthulhu, from his dark house in the mighty city of R'lyeh under the waters, should rise and bring the earth again beneath his sway. Some day he would call, when the stars were ready, and the secret cult would always be waiting to liberate him

"True Detective - Season 1" is my favourite single season series of all time. 💯 You should really consider skipping season 2: New actors, new storyline and it´s just a giant mess. Spare yourself from that experience. 👎💩 HOWEVER "True Detective - Season 3" is a very nice show. Not as good as the first season, but it really brings out the soul of season 1 with a great cast and good story. 🤗

Along the shore the cloud waves break, The twin suns sink beneath the lake, The shadows lengthen In Carcosa. Strange is the night where black stars rise, And strange moons circle through the skies But stranger still is Lost Carcosa. Songs that the Hyades shall sing, Where flap the tatters of the King, Must die unheard in Dim Carcosa. Song of my soul, my voice is dead; Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed Shall dry and die in Lost Carcosa. Camilla: You, sir, should unmask. Stranger: Indeed? Cassilda: Indeed, it's time. We have all laid aside disguise but you. Stranger: I wear no mask. Camilla: (Terrified, aside to Cassilda.) No mask? No mask!
