What is great about this show, is the dichotomy of Russ and Marty. Publicly, Marty appears to be the superior moral character. He is religious. he is married. He has children. Everyone wonders about Russ. But we see in reality, Marty is much more morally questionably than russ. Just because Russ doesnt commit to a religion, or to a family, does not mean he isn't a moral character. Russ is the true hero here.

The slow burn until the pin gets pulled on the grenade of episode four and Rustin's undercover character is revealed. Matthew McConaughey loved being in this show with his friend Woody and watched his own show weekly when it came out. The two main leads in this really dug deep in character and performance that makes this a great complex TV show.

I don't know if someone mentioned it in your Patreon last year, but here it is (again) anyway. The "Yellow King" and Carcosa are references to "The King in Yellow" by Robert W. Chambers. Written around the turn of the (20th) century, the book is considered amongst the first works of "weird fiction." The book is a collection of short stories and poem, only the first four are "weird." H.P. Lovecraft's work takes some inspiration from those stories, although by Lovecraft's time, Chambers was no longer writing weird fiction. His career was mostly popular romance novels, with which he was actually able to make a living as a writer. It is therefore ironic that he is remembered today for "The King in Yellow." You might want to check it out.

Early cosmic horror, other-dimensional beings and such. Often included as part of popular Lovecraft mythos nowadays. It's pretty amazing how authors shared and encouraged the use of their creations with each other back then compared to today's rabid IP litigiousness.

Hey Jen, You ask about the psyche of Marty when Rust confronts him about his extramarital activities. I think Marty is one of those people who love to judge but does not like to be judged for his miscreants.------At the point when Rust was confronting him, he was pretending to be the perfect husband, the perfect family man.------ For Rust to call him out on it was an affront to his manhood, since he sees being the male protector for the women he is around, even though he ignores the main need for communication and interaction that most women desire.----- Later this plays out as he confronts his wife, his mistress, and even his daughters.

Honestly love to see you checking this out. I watched it on a whim about a year after it was released, and it's still in my top 3 favorite series of all time. I wouldn't bother with seasons 2 or 3. They're not bad by any means, but they don't come anywhere near how good this season is. Also, the group that does the intro music is "The Handsome Family." They're a husband/wife duo out of New Mexico, and their music is phenomenal (this series actually lead to me buying their entire discography). Can't wait for more. Cheers!

Hey Jen, by episode 2 we see so many of Marty's flaws. Marty is such a realistic character portrayal by Woody Harelson. ------ It seems like the start of the show that Rust is the dysfunctional personality when in fact it's Marty. ------ Marty's very big flaws in his personal life which cause so much more chaos to the relationship between the two characters. AS a detective he can't hold a candle to Rust's intuition, but he's is integral to case management and interviewing leads. Of course, you have so much to see with their professional and personal interactions.

Hey Jen, Rust is just phenomenal. He's such a flawed character, but he doesn't shy away from those defiencies. It allows him to get in the mind of the perpretrator. Every time I see clips from the first season of TD it makes me respect Matthew McConahey's acting. He really gets into the psyche of his characters. Which would send us mere mortals ape shit.

It's interesting that in order to think how the "killer" thinks, somehow the hunter has to think that way too. The flip side is that often we assume that others are thinking like we do, hence Marty's paranoia about Rust "mowing his lawn". Other great dramatizations of this that spring to mind are Michael Mann's movies Manhunter and Heat, and the 90's TV series Millennium, which is about as dark as television has ever got.

Vintage Jen!! So good to revisit this - truly one of, if not -the-, best single series of TV of all time. I probably watch it once every year or so, every single time it gives up more. And on the raid at the end of Ep4 - it *is* actually one take. They had shots planned in where they could have cut if needs be (the lens flare on the heli is one, when Rust and Ginger pass behind the hanging laundry is another), but they went for the single take, and nailed it.

A little note on Woody's character talking about mowing another man's lawn. There was a scene in Kingpin with Woody and Randy Quaid where he said the same line. I want to recommend two of my favorite Matthew McConaughey movies: "Killer Joe" (2011) and "Mud" (2012). "Killer Joe" is such a brutally cynical dark comedy that Matthew McConaughey said he felt like he needed to take a shower after the first time he read the script, but after adjusting his perspective, he realized that it was brilliant and hilarious. Conversely, "Mud" is a beautifully bittersweet story with characters that will touch your heart. It feels like a very quiet, personal movie (which probably why people who watch it love it yet it gets largely overlooked). If you do take my recommendation but only watch one and not the other, then watch "Mud."

To me the three main male characters in this show represent the "dark triad"; Rust Cohle is Machiavellian, Marty Hart is a narcissist, and the killer is a psychopath. I am not sure if Nic Pizzolatto intended it that way, though. I've lost track of the number of times I've watched this season, and I've watched a fair number of reactions to it; but, you really blew my mind with an observation you made during episode three. They were asking Cohle about his success "in the box" and he answered that he always knew in about five minutes whether someone was guilty or not, then asked them how long they took. You said that he was really asking them if they had decided, yet, as to *his* guilt or innocence. Wow! That blew me away. Very insightful, indeed. Well done. Okay...on to episode four....

I must say you "get" this show way better than most. As you said, the crime is secondary. It's more of a deep dive into these two men as well as the introspection caused by Rust's philosophy. It's my personal favorite show ever. There isn't one line of dialogue that is a throw away. Everything said is said for a reason. If you watched it a second time I believe you'd pick up on more of the clues which are presented but not referenced. As far as all-time great characters go the masses seem to have chosen Walter White. Easily Rust for me. Oddly and sadly, I've never related to a character as much I do with Rust. I've suffered many of the same things as him and have had an unfortunate affinity for darkness. I also live in the south and you might be the first reactor I've seen who connects the pacing with the location and also didn't pass judgement on us "rednecks" down here. We are the one group/class of people who society deems perfectly acceptable to denigrate. I'd like to type about six paragraphs on my thoughts about TD but no one wants to read all that lol. I will say the themes and even some of the humor go over most people's heads. I'm headed over to your part 2 now. Thank you for doing this! (don't waste your time with seasons 2 and 3 as each is a self contained season and they don't hold a candle to S1 and were very disappointing IMO)

35:20 Regarding ‘the world needs bad men’, I can’t remember where I read it, but apparently that line in the Bible ‘blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth’ is a poor translation from Greek because instead of ‘meek’, meaning humble and gentle, what it really should say is ‘those with swords who know how to use them, but choose to keep them sheathed shall inherit the Earth’, which sounds very similar to ‘the world need bad men’ to me.

True Detective season 2 wasn’t as well regarded but it’s actually solid. I recommend just not trying to compare it to Sn 1, but let’s face Sn 1 is incomparably amazing. Think of Sn 2 as just a good season of detective work about creepy weird complicated villains

If you like Rust's monologues, you should youtube inmendham on antinatalism or efilism. Stuff around 5-8 years old content. Or even look for graytaich0 who does a lot of videos edits of his videos. But yeah if you find the right videos, the original are better, just tons of videos of his you would have to scan thru to find. inmendham/gary looks just like Rust and talks just like him too. Always made me wonder if someone in production of this show knew of him.

This show is brilliant, and the acting is a joy to behold. Unfortunately, season 2 is extremely disappointing, but seasons 3 and 4 are excellent.
