Does Jenna think she's the only person who's ever had to go to work after receiving heartbreaking news? Most people I know have had to hide their own pain for one day for the sake of someone else.

Isn't Marie kondo like literally an expert on cleaning and decluttering? Why would she not teach people about that specifically? She seems to be the only sort of self help type person who stays in her lane. I don't need Marie kondo to be my therapist. She can teach me how to declutter.

I have been following these gurus for years. And like many people (I'm assuming), I thought there was something wrong with me because I never got anything from their "teaching." All it did was make me think that there was something wrong with me, or assume that maybe I was just too pessimistic or broken to understand what they were trying to say. People like you coming out and exposing how they've been wasting our time has been so helpful and validating. You're pointing out things that we've seen, but we're too gaslighted to acknowledge or feel comfortable saying. Thank you.

I haven’t read the book, but I’ve followed Jenna off and on for a few years, and I actually met her at a conference where she was a guest speaker for one session. (Jenna was very nice and easy to chat with.) My issue is she uses her motherhood as a common denominator with her followers but her main message is rest. There is literally no rest as a mother, especially while trying to build a business. I don’t want to take any success from her, but the fact is she has an entire TEAM of people working her business (she is the face so we don’t see the other people), her husband cares for the children full time and they have their family which supports them. Most normal women would call themselves lucky if they had one of those things to count on. Yes, resist the hustle and burn out, but what she has done isn’t attainable or practical to her girl-next-door demographic. She is super savvy and a master strategist though and I’m glad she has found success, but the “you can have it all including rest and be a great mother message” isn’t realistic or fully disclosed to how she actually does it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah, she can only do it now but she was hustling big time as a photographer. I’m just wondering why she doesn’t explain how she did it, in both scenarios with the water-colouring business and with podcasting.

There’s no way she stocked shelves at Target and worked up to HR. I remember when target stores spread out across the US. There was a ton of opportunity and need for HR. I stocked shelves in 2006 for $8.125/hr got a whole $1 “shift difference” for working overnights! A whole dollar over what is still the federal minimum wage! My manager’s nightly pep talk included reminding us that we were replaceable and if we didn’t stock a box a minute we’d be replaced by someone who would. Until they also burned out. That’s the business model. Pay low, burn out, churn through “associates” because “we’re a family.”

She left photography because there was a $$$ ceiling to wedding photography in Wisconsin. She was never going to be a bajillionaire shooting barn weddings. She's all about that cold hard cash. It has nothing to do with creativity, artistry, skill, or loving what she does. It's about money. Period. She followed the money.....that's what she did leaving photography and that's what she did hooking up with Tony Robbins and WELL KNOWN scam-artist Dean Graziosi.

You are 100% correct about the Target situation. People intern and network with executives so they can get a job at the corporate office after graduating. So many people who work in the corporate office have no idea what it’s like to wear the red and khakis. I couldn’t believe Ive had to explain the coordination of shifts and breaks to these leaders. It’s surprising she’s even stepped into a target store ⭕️ Edit: fantastic breakdown. I learned a lot especially about publishing

And here I thought people would question how I went from editing (still do this) to content writing to copywriting to strategy consulting, and at least THAT actually makes sense. 😂 Also, it might not be the unsavory bits they don't want to share but from leveraging social capital and privilege (aka throwing a lot of money at the problem), and that's not relatable. So they talk about manifesting and other energetic bullshit because that's accessible to people (and they can blame people for not doing it right/enough to keep them paying money). I started with nothing upfront (except my old laptop) because I had left an abusive relationship and didn't have a bank account. But that was writing articles, and I already had strong writing skills. Oh, I recommend Channel Makers to grow a channel!

The thing about the book, though - most nonfiction book deals are actually made without the book written yet. Then you get an advance, half at the beginning, and half when you finish your manuscript. That way you and the publisher work together on it so that it fits their vision. Usually fiction books *are* written before they are sold to a publisher. I'm currently writing a non-fiction book for a publisher :) Anyway, love your videos!

For fiction, if it’s a one-book deal, you’re right. If it’s more than one, the rest of the books probably aren’t written (I got a 4-book deal with one book finished and 8/24 chapters of another). My second standalone deal was based off a proposal and 3 chapters. But you get your advances in halves? Ours (if we get one) are being spread into fourths and fifths. It’s really frustrating.

I will never understand how people don't get that it is all a ruse to sell books and if you've bought one you've only played yourself. How someone becomes successful will never have anything to do with you since the life you lead will not be the same as the author's, the connections, the luck, the timing is different for every individual. There is no magic recipe or secret formula to success. How long are people going to keep falling for this same scam with a different author and book cover it's actually crazy to me 😬

I would like to add somethings about "teaching business" here (from my personnel experience, haha I will write a self help comment and starting my empire :D). I'm a teacher at a university in computer sciences, and a part of my job is to debug codes written by my students. And because I'm more experienced than them, I generally can easily find a solution. But what is really difficult is to explain to my students how I work to find the solution because the process I used to solve these problems is not often formalized in my brain. So I think the same kind of problems is prevalent with self help gurus, and because their are not psychologists (or business teachers ?), they can't formalized their paths to a solution. And when the path to a solution is formalized, is a kind of boring bunch of steps that can't be used like a cooking recipe but adapted to your case in particular, that implies to read some hard documentation, etc. So it's not very funny and not very marketable to became a New York Times best selling author.
@Beckisphere
@Beckisphere Жыл бұрын
Your end rant about how starting a business is hard throughout and it takes capital and time to try to make it happen was very relatable because I'm very likely going to start trying to make my youtube channel take off a little faster by going at it full time. I'm also going to try to make different social media platforms pop off to see if I can turn climate news and analysis into my own business. I'm at a point in my life where I have no debt, a very supportive family, some savings, and no dependents (besides a cat) -- which I know is very privileged -- and I'm extremely passionate about what I want to do that I'm just going to go for it. But I know it's going to be a shit ton of work and I wish people would actually talk more about how they got to where they are so I could take notes. I just bought Savy's business book, which hopefully will help, though it's more about building her book business, not her channel. Anyways, I feel you! I think I started watching your content several thousand back and it's cool to see your channel grow. We can be that 25% that makes it!

I love your criticism about new businesses. I have a few caveats. A lot of US businesses are started as a reason to avoid taxes. They make good profits and then invest in an new venture because there’s no incentive or obligation to pay employees more. Most small family businesses aren’t on the stock exchange. Source: I worked at a “start-up” that was apparently a way for the owners who were in an adjacent industry to pay less in taxes by opening this start-up. It lasted about 2 years from first hire to closing the doors. There are many creative ways to get started in your own biz with little investment up front and Savy wrote a book about it! I haven’t bought it yet but I plan to. It took me a long time to find a practical biz book for my industry. These gurus focus on “just start” because then they have the widest possible audience. I am an artist and I didn’t know that I would first try craft markets, I just happened upon 2 books by crafters that gave concrete biz advice. They aren’t best-sellers, do they even have reprints? I couldn’t find the first one I read again if I tried, the library probably discarded it because it was written in the 80’s-but the advice is still 100% today! I didn’t believe my professors either when they said just do the work, just get started. I was too anxious about how to move forward. Decades later, yeah that was the first piece of relevant advice. The next best advice is still a little woo-woo, it’s that when you start your thing and start telling people about it, people who want to support you will show up. Well- no, not if you’re raised in a working class family who instilled so much practicality in you that you thought you could sell crafts because of all the DIY skills you have. Because they don’t see it as practical because they would never pay $20 for a thing they could make themselves for less than $2! It took me so long to even imagine that people out there did pay for art and crafts, and paid well for it. Third best advice is take feedback and improve your offerings. Reevaluate often- stay true to your values, but do offer what people want. I wanted to make necklaces and people wanted earrings. I don’t know why I took so long to offer earrings but I priced them higher than I would pay for them and they sold quite well. It’s a balance to find the right price points and all. Fourth best advice is consistency. You can go viral on you first video but then what? You gotta keep them coming back for more and sell some merch or encourage them to binge and interact. Keep up the great work! My fav comment was when you said “they aren’t like us, we have ethics” 🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦

I get what your saying about Jenna & this book - useless. But I will add that anyone who has been serious about starting & running a business knows most fail - your statistics are extremely generous- having been had my business for over 30 years now I have known & worked w/ 100’s of entrepreneurs - over 50% will fail in the 1st 5 years & less then 10% will ever make it to year 10. I agree that few people share the actual steps they took but I don’t know if they are necessarily hiding that on purpose - I think perhaps they don’t know or like me where it took close to 8 years to get to a comfortable place & then experienced so much growth over the next 10 years - that I can promise there is no one thing, no 5 hacks, no magic list another person can follow to have the same outcome. If there was everyone would succeed at it. There is no other way to have a successful business other than to create it - I realize how “unhelpful” this statement may sound But isn’t meant to be.

I say this because she touts her success and proclaims she wants to help other women achieve their goals, but provides no actionable steps to actually do so. I also find it hypocritical of her to shade Rachel Hollis, and proceed to tell Lewis Howes that the reason she is focused on marketing and business is to live a life that most people aren’t able to. The implied message is that she’s special and above us all, in spite of selling her relatability 🖕🏼What an infuriating whole lot of nothing!!

She "couldn't" mention the story about her mom and the gym owner because it would take away whatever shine she has/had. And then she wants to be _the_ star in her interviews. Mentioning the mom story would take any spotlight she hustled for, away from her. She can't afford that, so to speak. Also, I think it is in the interest of these "gurus" to promote each other, but not to actually say anything useful in their books. Since their income comes from constantly "new" books, they can't afford to make any of the books individually useful. Furthermore, it's not as if they have that many things to say in terms of (useful) advice. So they have to keep whatever it is they are selling (courses, books, seminars etc) limited to a basic "teaser" level. Besides, if you factor in everything else she had, say a supportive family, financial resources, a high paid job, she was "at the right place, at the right time". Or to put it bluntly, it was PLAIN DUMB LUCK. Period. TL;DR: These "gurus" *need* to keep being in the spotlight, to make the story about how they made it to be solely through their actions. Anything less will make them lose their shine, since they can no longer to be "special" or "different from everybody else". Furthermore, they only want to be _seen_ as relatable, _not_ be relatable.

Driving a car or sailing a boat, it's the same. Be in charge, ignore criticism and just do it! Crying on demand helps ...

She does say things like “you can’t find your way with other people’s advice” or something along those lines in the book, made me think of Big Dave x

If mama ever becomes successful enough to tell her origin story, the stocking shelves story wouldn’t be a lie…not at Target though, in a tiny independent grocery store in a tiny town…

Given her emphasis on her unusual method of writing her book, I think the intent is to show how she "thinks outside the box"? Also I disagree with your comment that RH and JK are friends. They may be "friends for benefits", but not actual friends. They are ultimately rivals, they compete for the same kind of readership. I would bet further that the content of their courses are almost identical. They can't afford to be friends.

Jenna, I literally ate gluten free mac and cheese today. Yes, it is much sadder and much less delicious than regular mac and cheese, but it does exist. You just need to stop LYING. Also, re: her shading Rachel, apparently Jenna commented on one of Rachel’s “apology” posts after Rachel’s cancellation, saying that she can’t support someone who does stuff like that. But considering what I learned from you and Kayla about her interactions with Toi, I think that’s pretty fucking rich of Jenna.

thank you for all the insight into her book Camelia! great breakdown. I used to be such a huge fan of her early on podcast days and right after she went viral for the body positivity post. I unfollowed her after the June 2020 BLM controversy. I find her now SO CRINGE in all of these book promo interviews. She's so full of herself and gross to watch her nonstop privilege brag.

I feel the same!! Although I unfollowed her when she would constantly talk about her new baby (my daughter is 2 months older than her oldest) and about how she sleeps 12 hours a night with naps while mine slept 2.5 hours a night 😂 Also when she had a podcast episode about her biggest $$$$ launch while being a mom yet never mentioned how her husband is a stay at home dad. That definitely changes things. 😅

Jenna just goes against things for the sake of going against things lol. I don't know if she has a team that helps her with her public figure, but if she does, she doesn't follow their instructions, because her contradictions are very obvious and shameless.

I don't care, either way, about this woman. I'm only here to give legs to my instinctual dislike of her. (Except... I don't feel like there's enough justification for me not to like her, in this video. So I'll keep on disliking her because of her annoying over-exuberance. And her style. I hate her style.)
