Linen Stitch is a great textured stitch in knitting that gives the fabric a woven look rather than look like the typical knit and purl stitch. Add a 2nd and 3rd color and wow, the stitch pattern looks amazing. Give it a try!

@@mangomum99 Yes I think you could work this as a Mobius. I think the backside is actually just as cool-looking as the front. I was thinking more about your thoughts on an icord border...I had to go up in needle size when working the linen stitch and that might make the icord border too big. So you may want to use a smaller needle for the icord, or attach an icord border after you've completed the linen stitch portion.

I love this pattern but I haven't picked up knitting good yet. So I found this kind of stitch on crochet. I will learn to do it this way. I want give up so easily lol.

Knitting takes practice, just like when you learned to crochet. I'd say practice just knitting and purling for a good while before working this Linen Stitch. It can be a bit confusing until you really have just plain knitting down. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

Hi! Great video nice and helpful. Do you cast on, knit/purl and row and then start the pattern? Or cast on a row and then start the pattern? Is there kind of no wrong way to that? Also how do you add in a color? The ye' ol normalish way of adding in a color? Thanks!

Typically, I cast on then knit the first row. Depending on the pattern to follow, I may purl the first row rather than knit. I do this, just because the cast on row is normally a tad tighter than my knitting. But there really isn't a reason other than that. When working back and forth on flat knitting, I always add color on the right hand side. I tie on the new color at the beginning of a row and off we go in the new color. Thanks for your questions!

Give it a try with a size 5 needle. Knit up a swatch before you tackle the project.

I would suggest change colors every row. Since this stitch uses a slip stitch effect, the colors changing every row will show off that slip stitch.

You can change colors anytime. I would suggest if using up stash yarn try to watch what colors you have on the needles. If you use two colors that are similar, it can be more difficult to pick out which are your slip stitches and which ones are the regular knit stitches. Good luck.

This is a great tutorial. You are the only one who mentioned using larger needles than the yarn calls for. Since knitting in the round is easier, could I make a scarf by knitting in the round and steeking it to turn the cowl into a scarf.

Very interesting question! I would imagine you could, of course following all the steps for securing the edges and then cutting. I would also recommend using wool so those edges can sort of felt together. Would be a fun project. Good luck.

I'm working on a hat and used an even number of stitches in the round for a k2 p2 ribbed edge. Any idea how to make this work since it isn't an odd number of stitches? I was also thinking about increasing and decreasing for a slouch. Idk if this sounds doable to you but any advice is appreciated!

After the ribbing, and starting the linen stitch, just work one k2tog on two knit stitches. Then you'll have an old number. My biggest advice would be to go up needle sizes on the linen section. Lines stitch tends to shrink in size as opposed to regular knitting. So if you used a size 7 for the ribbing, I would use a size 9 on the linen section. Also note that the linen section is more like weaving in fabric tension, it isn’t springy like regular knitting, so a slouchy would probably work great.

You sure could! Just remember that this stitch isn't stretchy.....so you'd want to make sure you have a ribbing area to hold the socks up on your leg.

Do you knit 2 together when first joining in the round and end up with an even number of stitches to be worked or do you work over an odd number of stitches the whole time?

In the round, you want an odd number of stitches. When I work in the round I cast on one extra stitch to what the pattern calls for so that I can knit that extra stitch and the first stitch together to close the tube. So if the pattern calls for 141 stitches to cast on, I will cast on 142. On my first stitch of the first worked row, I slide the last stitch over to the left needle and work a K2tog with the first stitch. That brings my stitch count back to what the pattern called for 141. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

This is a stiff texture and would be tough to try for a tshirt, but you could always give it a try.

Thanks for your kind words! The cowl is in sock weight yarns. Bits and pieces of yarn I have had left over from projects. There are 405 stitches on the cowl. Just remember to cast on an odd number of stitches if working in the round. Thanks for watching!

I loved this tutorial very much. I have done a little linen stitch but this explained it so well I feel like I learned a lot. One question....what size circular did you use?? I want to try a fingering weight yarn or possibly a DK, I'm not sure yet. I may have a 12" circular but want to know what you used. I don't want it to go around my head twice....only ONCE so not too large. Thank you so much! Sharon :)

For the cowl, I used a size 6 circ. Since Linen stitch is a dense fabric, you need to go up several sizes to what the yarn calls for. Sock yarn, I go size 6 or 7. Worsted, I go 10-10.5. If you see my comments below, for the longer Cowl, I cast on 405 stitches. Just make sure when working in the round, you cast on an odd number of stitches to keep the repeat working. Sorry for my late reply, just logged in and it's been a while! I can't remember exactly how many stitches I cast on, but I think it was in the 400s. Since this stitch makes a dense fabric, you cast on more than you might think you would for a typical scarf or cowl. Maybe work a test swatch on 50 stitches and after a few inches, see if it's way to small or big and you can double or triple or more the stitches. This is a wonderful stash buster! I am curious to know what the edges of the card look like when you carry up the three different yarns.

If working flat, and carrying the yarn up the edge, it is only slightly noticeable. I would suggest bringing up all the colors each row. Meaning if you only bring up the color when you need it for that row, you'll have a short float from row 1 to row 4 when you use that color again. If you bring the color up as you go, you'll have less floats on that edge. Hope that makes sense.

Very helpful! I notice when I switch from using this stitch in the round to flat, for a section of a garment for instance, the knitted fabric looks slightly different between the in-the-round sections and the flat sections. Is that usual or did I do something wrong? I made sure the flat sections were even numbers of stitches. thank you!

I think it's probably because when you are working in the round you have a more even stride with just knitting. Once you go back and forth and add purling, it makes our tension kind of go wonky. If the stitches look too big, you might go down a needle size for that area. Thanks for watching.

I can’t remember exactly, but I am sure it was probably 200 or more. This stitch doesn’t have a lot of stretch to it, so your cast on won’t stretch out like it does in normal knitting.

Hello. Love your video. I need help from anyone please. I already co odd stitches in the round. I did a knit foundation row in black. I need help to know how to add another color. I will be alternating black yarn and a variegated every other row. Im just not sure how to add the other color for in the round. Thanks for advice from anyone.

add the color just like you would any other time. Just start the new color with a knit stitch. after I have knitted several rows, i'll go back and tie the loose end to the old color. that closes any holes.

I just started this and I keep purling the slip stitch! I don’t know how many I did like that but I don’t know how to fix it so I’m going to just rip it out. I’m not sure which side is the rs and which is the was. This is totally different from what I am used to and I know it’s supposed to be easy.

You are right, it's hard to know which is the right and wrong side. I clip a safety pin, or a stitch marker to the front or right side, which helps me. And yes it's tough to break the habit of purling and slipping instead.

How and where do you add a new yarn? If you do it at the edge then the wrap around of the slip one is hanging loose? do you add in in the middle? I am doing a shoulder strap and it looks raggedy from adding an initial new yarn at the edge? Not sure I am doing right but I love this video and this stitch and knowing flat and round. You are wonderful instructor, thanx!!!

With this stitch, you can add the new yarn anywhere, not just the edge. I would add a new color on my next stitch being knit, I would use the next color. Once I've knit past that row for maybe 5 owls, I'll go back and tie the old yarn and the new yarn to close up the small hole. If you tie the new yarn right away, it'll still need to be tightened up after several rows, so I just want till then. You can try to start and stop new colors in the same spot, but I found that it looks bad on the wrong side. So if you stagger where you tie on new colors, it'll look a lot better.

@@jennyknits excellent, i guess my problem is that i am using solid yarns and 5 of them so by the time I get back to the first one there is a big loop on the side of the strap from where it was not used because they are just trailing loose to their ball of yarn resting. So then I guess I have to cut and start again because I cannot be carrying 5 yarns up the side. This is only my second time of messing with several yarns in a small piece where everthing is so noticeable, so maybe I am missing something, but your advice above is very helpful and such a quick response ... thank you!

@@ooohlaa13 I can see what you are saying about the solid color yarns. If you start them at the edge...you might start it one stitch early or one stitch late so that you start on a knit stitch. As for carrying 5 yarns up. My advice, since it's a strap and not a super wide thing, just cut and start new yarns each time. If the piece was something like a scarf, I probably would do the same. If it is only a color or two, I might carry that upwards. But you are right carrying 5 up an edge is impossible to disguise. Good luck!!

@@jennyknits th🤪nx I am working on it now but I keep getting mixed up with only 16 sts I lose concentration and then do wrong stuff ... such a surprise I thought it would be SIMPLE but changing back and forth makes it harder to get rhythm. I look forward to doing a cowl because then I will have no changes each row. I have a ton of worsted yarns I hand dyed left over from projects to make a multicolor cowl. This strap is a challenge, I go unconscious and then have to rip out!!!

Does anyone have any tips on linen stitch with stranded knitting colorwork. Im not sure how to put the correct color on my current stitch if it is a slip stitch. (If that doesn't make sense, If the color I am supposed to knit next is red, but on the slip stitch, form the previous row the color is yellow, without messing up the stitch pattern, is it possible to make it red) [If not does anyone know any linen stitch line stitch patterns that is not reliant on slipping]

I don't think you can do that...Linen stitch is all about the slip stitches, so it is hard to switch colors on a specific stitch. You can tie new colors on, but you will always have that old color slip stitch from the row previous.

i start a new color on a knit stitch. working in the round allows you to change color anywhere in the round.

The stitch would be interesting. Remember with this stitch, there isn't much "give" to the fabric. So with most socks you want them to be a tad "clingy" to hold to your foot. Linen Stitch is more of a woven fabric and doesn't cling.

Technically you can use this stitch for socks, BUT they won't be stretchy at all. This stitch makes a dense fabric and not at all clingy which you typically want socks to cling to your foot. I would suggest making a swatch so you can see how this fabric behaves before you dive into a pair of socks. Thanks for watching!
