I've been Vegetarian for 11 years, now vegan for 4. The only thing I miss about being not vegan is the convenience. I live in rural Germany, so there are no cool vegan restaurants around - I'm lucky if the salad doesn't come with bacon cubes. I miss being able to just go in the bakery and pick up a pastry. But I never actually miss meat or dairy.

this was so great! I identified with everything you said. The difference is that I just turned Vegan at age 72. 5 months ago. I really bought into the protein myth prior to this. I have never felt better. My health problems are disappearing. I feel stronger. And yes more spiritually and morally aligned with who I really am. This is the first video of yours I have watched. Ironically it’s calcium and iron and other random things people tend not to think of that tend to be low. What are you a body builder or elite athlete trying to lose fat and build muscle at the same time aiming to get 2 gram of protein per kilogram of body mass? Easier as a vegetarian.

I'm also 15 years vegan + 10 years vegetarian prior to that. 1. The health benefits came from discovering various allergies and issues. 2. The being cheerful part came from learning how to deal with life, nothing to do with veganism. 3. Being non-aggressive... That's my entire life, I can certainly be angry at stuff though. 4. I have nothing to miss prior to being vegan, that stuff ain't for me in any way. Veganism affects everyone differently, and not allot of people actually stick to it, only those that it fits them. I actually hardly ever talk to other vegans, I got very little in common with them. I'm a wacko animator, I have very little in common with most people xD

Whenever I have a cheese and dairy period, which is usually around the big holidays, I get all bloated, soggy and tired and my skin breaks out. So I quickly go back to my colorful vegan meals that are so energizing and full of flavor. When I eat mostly plan based my body is flexible, light, full of energy and my skin is clear and bright. I'm vegan from 13 years, still happy about my choice, but it's harder for me because of IBS, so I discovered 5/6 years ago that I need to avoid a lot of types of veggies, fruits and legumes to stay symptoms free. Fellow vegan here, this is such an interesting video, I love it!! 😍 In my case, after going vegan I started to become REALLY interested in wildlife and animal welfare so that I decided to sort of start a whole new path in life. Even though I had already finished uni, I started studying biology and researching alternatives to animal testing ... and I'm now living together with a bunch of former lab rats because I try to help getting them out of the labs as often as I can. 😂 5 years ago I thought I'd spend my life working abroad as a translator, living in big cities and travelling all the time - now I'm doing the opposite and couldn't be any happier. 😅

positive surprises for me: i almost never get sick in the winter anymore. i almost never feel tired after a big meal. my family supports cooking vegan although they don't want to make the switch themselves. negative surprises: meat eaters and vegetarians often want to talk about or educate me on veganism or "fake meat" (in an annoying way) or feel attacked when i just want to eat. eating out when traveling can be a challenge.

Loved your video. This is the first time I’ve seen you, I’ve missed too much of your life! I’ve been vegetarian since 1994, and vegan since the year 2000. There is a HUGE difference in what food is available now. Back when I started vegan, it was really only beans and tofu. As far as dating a non-vegan, I don’t base my attraction on another person on what they eat/don’t eat. I live with a pescatarian/chicken/turkey eater. Yes, it smells up my kitchen when he cooks these foods, and I insist all fish cooking is done on the grill outside. But he’s a fabulous, loving, caring man, that it’s a non-issue otherwise. I give him the food I cook from scratch, which he loves. He’s mentioned many times that he could easily go vegan, if I cooked like this every night. Some nights I just want a potato, so it’s not every day that I will make a big meal. I will make a soup and have that same soup for the rest of the week for my dinner. I also have a gentle, caring side to me, that probably didn’t happen until much later in my vegan life. I also can’t imagine ever eating meat, or why I even liked it back in my youth. If I have a social function to attend, I will eat my own food beforehand, because I’d rather just be around interesting people, than worry about what I’m going to eat. If it’s only a few hours, I can do without the food anyway.

Even something very small, and very simple. Maybe base recipes like congee with seasonal variations you enjoy. Maybe part memoir around your experiences/relationship with food, vegan culture, natural world appreciation. Maybe a collaboration with your favorite illustrator... Or maybe, a character could write a cookbook/memoir... I vote yes on more foodie/lifestyle content :)

In my life I was raised meat-eating, went vegan for about 6-7 years, and recently switched back to meat-eating/omnivore. Switching back and forth made me realize what a difference it makes in your heart, but I don't know how to say it because it sounds too sentimental- you're right though, it gets you in touch with the gentle side of yourself. I was a kinder and gentler person when I was vegan, to people as well as animals. The difference in my own psychology and behavior is noticeable and shocking (even though right now I eat very little meat/animal products, and when I do it's all pasture raised/ humanely grown, blah blah blah. The difference between that and vegan is still huge.) I like that you talked about that, it's one of the biggest reasons I think I'm going to go back to it. I feel like I might be betraying a part of myself and others in the world by choosing the less gentle way. Our thoughts and values influence our actions, but our actions also influence our values and our thoughts.

Idk your reasons for going back to Omni... Buuuuuut, you can always view it as more of a spectrum. Been vegan 5.5 years now but I have had dairy or eggs a few times due to extenuating circumstances where it just wasn't possible not to unless I starved myself... So, if you wanted, you could go vegetarian and view it as a spectrum... It doesn't have to be all or nothing. It'd be better for the animals if everyone drastically cut down rather than a few people cutting it out all together... If it's some sort of deficiency that was created, by all means, please take care of yourself. If it's just a convenience thing... Please consider keeping some stuff prepped and in the fridge ready for later.

I love your videos! Thanks for the hard work creating! I've been vegan for 2.5 years and the main downside is travel. When I get somewhere it's usually on, but flights are hard so I pack my own food. I am a healthy vegan, so I'm not interested in a fake burger or fried junk, so dining out can be hard but I can make it work. I'll NEVER go back!

this video was such a pleasant surprise. i think in this time, it gets so hard being a vegan when so many youtubers and outside influences insist that it’s not possible or sustainable. i keep reminding myself that it is, and it is not a sacrifice especially considering the lives it is saving! 💗💗 you’re right in saying that it relieves you from being cynical. it also eases my heart when i remember what humans are capable of this kindness

I find this very interesting, I use YT a lot for my recipes and the algorithm always suggests plant based creators, so much so that I have the exact opposite feeling i.e., that everyone is going plant-based right now and this is amazing! :)

The point about dating a non-vegan is so true! I turned vegan midway through my 6 year relationship and to this day it is the thing we argue about the most. Him being a dedicated meat eater and me cooking only vegan, I find myself hoping every day that he would stop eating meat - or at least in our home. But I know that it’s not fair to him either to push my food choices onto him. Should we ever break up I’m 100% going for a fellow plant eater😅.

Well being a carnist is more than just a personal preference because living sentient beings have to be murdered against their will for it. Going vegan isn't that difficult these days. If your partner can't even change his diet for you then I wouldn't put all your faith in that relationship.

I went vegan 5 years into our relationship... He went vegan 2 weeks later. Not even because of me. He had a coworker who kept bugging him about it. I did too lol but had always been interested in being a vegetarian (told I would be emaciated by family if I did, so I didn't). Now here we are 6 years later lol and his parents are trying to do keto and I'm like plz nooooooo. Oh well. I hope you guys find some meals that can be prepared vegan and "just add meat" at the end... =/

Take your life into your hands, insted of waiting for him to make the decision ;) maybe ask for a pause, and see if he is willing to change for you. However, I believe that certain diets are not for everyone, our bodies are different.

I have thought about being vegan often, as I eat loads of vegan options. The only reason why I haven't fully, is because the rest of my family I cook for are not vegan and it is sometimes tough to make meals for us all when they like meat (I do give them tofu and impossible meat/beyond meat once in a while and they are fine with it), but the main issue, is that one of my sons is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, and a lot of recipes include those (or have cheese made from cashews and such). I am mainly vegetarian with some pescatarian options regardless. I see a nutritionist because I am anemic and have high cholesterol from genetics (but live a very healthy lifestyle and really based off of that shouldn't have it high at all, but I do). My nutritionist has seen how adding fish has helped me a lot more than just the veggies and iron pills, etc. I have learned to balance it. I was vegetarian for two years and it actually caused me some health issues which is why I had to change it up a little. Anyway, I have never made congee and you have inspired me to try! I have not had beef in 8 years and not had pork in 16. Chicken, That one I have had here and there as well but only because I am pregnant and was told to add it. I will be off it again and was off of it for about 6 years.

What wonderful videos you make, Jenny! I'm so glad I found your channel, I keep enjoying each new video I watch. I totally agree with the feeling like a sweeter person eating vegan. I've noticed I feel more calm, kind, sweet, compassionate. I feel like things phase me less. I'm so inspired by your default foods/dishes- I tried the lentil brown rice congee for the 1st time recently & I love it, it's amazing. I could absolutely eat this every day. I'm just figuring out an adaptation for making it in our electric pressure cooker, getting the amount of water right. I love it though. Thank you for your wonderful videos!

I love thud Jenny , I have been vegan, occasionally vegetarian for over 10 years now and I can totally agree with you. I feel so good, never been healthier, even more sensitive to animals and nature than before. I feel in Peace with myself, connected to nature, it’s been the best decision ever. So Many people go away from Vegan so it’s so nice to see your video and hears you thoughts and experiences ❤️

I have been vegan for nearly 12 years now. I completely agree with the chock I sometimes get when I go through a store and see dead animals, and people actually picking them up to buy them! It's sometimes easy to forget when you live with another vegan, and think it's so obvious not to harm animals. One surprising thing for me was that I hated food all my childhood, but after becoming vegan that changed slowly. Suddenly food actually meant something. Now I love food more than anything! I want to try that congee, it looks delicious!

I've been a vegetarian since I was 14 and I remember the sorts of questions I used to get but now I know TONS of vegans and vegetarians and it's just so nice not to be alone anymore! I'm also a foster parent and our kid is lactose-intolerant - no problem when you already buy plant-based milks ;). It IS a bit odd raising a child who eats meat while I don't but I've never even been remotely tempted to eat anything he's having. I also agree with the decision fatigue, it's just so much easier to make decisions when you have a rule that lines up with your ethics.

Do you have the recipe for your congee? It sounds so good! ❤ I used to be vegan for three years, but my B12 vitamin level were a real struggle as well as the many allergies I have (soy, lectins, corn, gluten). Now I still eat lots of plants and definitely no dairy (love vegan nut cheeses!), but have the occasional organic fish, chicken and eggs. And I feel great in my body ❤

I do admire your dedication to a healthier lifestyle. My daughter has been a pescatarian for years and my son has joined her in his eating habits too. I have a lot of food sensitivities such as eggs, wheat, lactose and sesames and also tree nut and peanut allergies. Eating out with my daughter at a vegan restaurant required a complete clean before they could make my pizza☹️. I can’t see a way to living a vegan lifestyle with such an emphasis on nuts. Love your content. And I enjoyed your first book😊
