The premise in restricting the plot to the pool itself has already made it unbelievable... They could maybe pass it off if the entity reaches a bit farther to be a threat, but if it's this restrictive then the characters could just avoid going near the pool without incident.

swap it out from pool and home to like a cabin on a massive lake surrounded by miles of wetlands/waterways where the monster can go
@slayernominee17434 ай бұрын
@@Tadicuslegion78 This comment shows restraint...which some don't know. There was a d/c-list movie called "Ghost Shark"...oof, it's exactly what you're picturing and it could appear anywhere there was water. Thanks for the review, Jeremy. The short film is well done and it's easy to see how that would be the first scene in a horror film. Sounds like the remainder of the film though didn't work and that's unfortunate. Seems to be a common theme these days, good premise, but poorly executed. As for good horror films that got released in January, here are some of my favorites: The Relic (1997), Deep Rising (1998), Cloverfield (2008), My Bloody Valentine (2009), Season Of The Witch (2011), Split (2017), and Underwater (2020). Not all classics, but fun nonetheless.

Regarding the cat, I was really sad, but the way it's done I think it's actually not a stretch to come up with a headcanon that the cat was able to escape and just got freaked out and never came back. They didn't show him get grabbed or anything, and he didn't make sounds of anguish (thankfully... I'm actually really scared when I hear sounds like that because I always wonder how they achieved them). And the monster uses things that are still around to lure the people in... So... Yeah. That made me feel a bit better, even though I'm sure it's not the intention.

There are probably ways you could make a haunted swimming pool scary. But if it's one family's pool, rather than a pool in a public setting...? It's hard to be that impressed with a ghost, or any horror monster, that could be completely foiled with four traffic cones and maybe some "caution" tape.

I genuinely disliked all the characters except the brother (and his possession scene was definitely the highlight for me) and didn't find it to be an enjoyable watch. To me it is one of the most original films I've seen in years. I'm a pool technician, this feels like a movie trying to capitalize off of people who own pools or work on them. This is a premise that works as a 5-10 minute horror short.
@klaykid1174 ай бұрын
Did the girl playing Marco Polo needed a line where she's like "Why can't I open my eyes?" And maybe she's trying to swim out of the pool, but we either see that she's going nowhere despite swimming or that the pool is all of a sudden infinite. Or if they really wanted to be clever, we see it as a top down perspective and zoomed in enough that we see her swimming and the tiles under her moving as she's screaming that she can't open her eyes and the audience realizes that she definitely should have reached the end of the pool by now

With short films in mind, do theaters ever put them on? I always felt like they should If it's 30 min or so, it could have a showing every hour. Random shorts - no. There's usually a showing of Oscar-nominated shorts a week or two before the award-night. Sometimes, they can show a short film, if it has enough clout, like Almodovar's new short film recently was in theaters. But in general - no. That's what YT is for.

Spoilers I thought the cat dying serves the purpose of the son experiencing loss which is what makes him a target. The random kid nearly drowning as the son watches reflects the sons desire to bond with his father and feeling resentful because he can’t bond with his dad over baseball. He finally snaps out of it. The movie has a good message in the end. I’m honestly at a loss why people are so offended. A movie doesn’t have to try hard to be decent. Sometimes a movie like this can act as a palette cleanser after watching so many art house films that are automatically given a pass.

Padding the runtime and ripping scenes off from better movies is what PG-13 supernatural Horror films do. It's hard to make an effective one when you're limited with how much violence you can show, so I often wonder why people even try anymore. 1408 and Drag Me To Hell are two of the few examples I can think of that kept me entertained throughout.

Reminded me of a GooseBumps/Are You Afraid of the Dark segment

When the entity’s lore was explained, I immediately pointed out a plot hole, lol. Can’t fault the actors in this one, but can easily fault the writers. Editing is a good tip for better writing.

Which plot hole?

@@meghanmisaliar The lore explained in the movie is that the entity required a sacrifice. It was not explained what kind of sacrifice. The entity killed the family cat. The sacrifice has been made. Targeting the family is pointless.

That Marco Polo scene literally sounds like an SNL skit

Makes you appreciate something like Total Recall which is based on a very short story, just a few pages and they don't go to mars or pretty much anything that happens in the movie. They just took the premise of implanted memories and wrote a movie based on that. Big difference is they had talented writers.
