Jerome Hines Concert 1984

HD sound. This is a concert Hines did in 1984 at the age of 63 years old. He is obviously very healthy and fit and his voice is still at the height of his powers. It is nice to see him relax and sing to his friends and neighbors in Bonair, his summer home. Jerome Hines was the greatest bass America ever produced and one of the great basses of all time.

Have heard many recordings of Hines speaking. But before hearing this, I'd never realized how much Jerry's superb speaking voice sounded like Raymond Massey's --

Jerry Hines had a glorious voice, and was a fine singer. These people didn't realize how lucky they were to be treated to such a star concert. My only gripes about it were regarding his choice of songs. Hines was blessed with a superbly broad range, so technically he could sing almost anything, but not everything is meant to be sung by a bass. There are some songs that can be sung by any type of voice: tenor, baritone, bass, or even soprano, but many are good for high voices or low voices only. Just as Ole Man River must be sung by a bass in order to truly convey the hard toiling gruff slave, so does Granada demand a high-pitched tenor voice, in order to project the youthful exuberance and passion the singer is trying to convey about this city. It's just not the same coming from a bass. Well, at least that's how I feel.

Great artist but it same that at this age the only thing he can do is singing loud. I never heaard a piano or a pianissimo in the songs.
