Jerome Hines in Vocal Rarities

A couple of years before his death, Jerry Hines handed me some cassettes of his private recordings taken during his concerts. Many of these arias and songs are from the 40's and early 50's. He did well over a thousand concerts. These were in terrible sound so I have restored them to modern sound as best I could. Anyway if you like Hines you will love these rarities. :)

I was honored to be a student of Jerome. We are both basso cantantes and share the same birthday! He was a giant of a man and his heart was as big as the universe.

What a magnificent and regal instrument Mr. Hines possessed! In this age of mushy Bass voices his powerful, secure and resonant instrument is sorely missed !

Samuel Ramey cantava con una vocalità poco bella e di colore meno scuro del Tenore Ramon Vinay.Di più Ramey sovente lo "aiutavano" durante le sue recite con microfoni 🎙️ per la semplice ragione che aveva poca voce. no comment il vecchio

Jerry once told me that he had always wanted to be the "John Wayne" of opera singers! :) I think you made it Jerry

No, to Hines, born in 1921, John Wayne was a symbol of American strength admired around the world. Your definition was not shared then and is even today a prejudicial reading.

Am sure Hines recorded "Nearer My God to Thee," live or in the studio. But have yet to find it. Would love to hear it--

I am a russian opera singer(bass). Mr. Hines is one of my most favorite singers. May be there were some greater basses, but Jerome Hines 's records I love the most!

He was one of the greatest basses. I don't know about Russian basses. They make a kind of sound we don't like in the West. To me, the great basses of the 20th century were Mardones, Pinza, Siepi, Hines and Tozzi. Each has his favorite :)

@@OscarLevant1 I didn't mean russian busses! I am agree with your least. I prefer our composers Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Rakhmaninov, Skryabin much mire than basses from Russia. That's because all the italians, teachers and singers were in the US and in Italy..

@@OscarLevant1 If you knew more about bass singing, you wouldn't be so enamored of Hines's labored, wooly sound that deteriorated very rapidly. I mean, just listen to the opening track. He can't hold a note steady for more than ONE SECOND. You don't know Sibiryakov??? The most technical bass of all time?? Or Vasily Petrov? Vladimir Kastorsky? Aleksandr and Grigory Pirogov?? Dmitri Bukhtoyarov? Come on, man.
