I just hate how when someone talks about third parties theres always 2 excuses. Either you are taking away votes from a potential winner, or your vote wont matter anyways. So when is it acceptable to vote for the person you ACTUALLY want to become presindent. If your vote changes the election and nominates someone like Donald, then so be it, but at least next time Democrats wont elect a weak candidate in their primaries!

Please Young Turks bring up the alternative vote. I don't have a problem with consequentialists who believe you have to act within the present system but only if they are explicit in acknowledging the absence of Democracy. Game theory should not and does not need to be an aspect of Democracy. You should not need to take into account how others will vote. It is not inevitable that the media should have this much power in dictating your options. I would just say google it (it is also called the instant-runoff voting system) but since most won't, I will summarize it and its effect. The act of voting: Instead of each person choosing one candidate you rank the candidates from best to worst. You don't have to rank all of them - if you only care about 3 of the candidates, assign them the numbers 1 to 3 and leave the rest of the candidates blank - they will be considered to be joint last. How the winner is calculated: All the first preference votes are tallied. If someone has more than 50% of the vote, they win. If not, the candidate with the least support is discarded and those who chose that candidate as a first preference have their second preference move up to first preference. This continues until someone has more than 50% of the vote. The effect: Being believed to have a chance is no longer a factor in whether people vote for you. The example: say you prefer Jill Stein. However you believe that she doesn't have a real chance. In the present system someone who believes Trump must be stopped can be expected to vote tactically. But within the alternative vote, you would simply list her as first preference while still ranking Clinton above Trump - consequently you both democratically express your actual desire without risking being a cause of President Trump. Now say that Bernie was running as an independent. Say 6 out of 10 people preferred him to Clinton or Trump. With the alternative vote, he would win. This is not a minor change with very little effect in reality - the alternative vote would totally change the average American's relationship with what is supposedly meant to be the prime example of a democratic society. I am going to post this on a bunch of TYT videos in the hope that it is noticed. I myself am voting for Jill Stein (in California). I had to work harder with less conviction than most people to get the vote because I am a dual US/UK citizen with no current US residence and I did it both in the absence of believing that I had any real voting power in California and the absence of believing I was engaging with a democratic system. I did it for no reason other than excitement about being a part of this circus. But we deserve a better reason than that.

ventura's talk is seriously dangerous. this election is the perfect scenario for adopting the "lesser of two evils" strategy. you simply can't risk letting trump get into office, end of story. given the current system you have to vote strategically whether you like it or not and that's not my opinion it's a simple truth about the "first past the post" voting system. if you want your vote to have the most effect then you have to vote strategically, that's not debatable. one less to hillary is equivalent to one more for trump, consequentially the two are the same...that's basic arithmetic. fight for a different voting system AFTER the election is over, that's obviously the best course of action.

1. The problem is conflating voting between 2 candidates in first past the post voting with assuming those 2 have to be Dems and Republicans. As we see in the primaries, and what Ventura demonstrates, what's important is voting for whichever 2 has the most momentum. While it's almost certainly too late now, the problem is when people use your logic to say 3 months ahead of the election that it has to be Clinton or Trump, when in reality, that's more than enough time for a third party to get more momentum and even force voters who prefer Clinton or Trump to have to get behind the third party in order to win. Given polls months ago were showing a majority of people wanted a third party and more people were voting against a person, rather than for, and only 7% of the electorate voted for either candidate, there was plenty of room for a third party to have taken momentum, if it weren't for the oversimplified logic of having to vote between Dems and Republicans. Remember it wasn't that long ago that Ross Perot was outpolling one of the 2 major parties, if he hadn't dropped out temporarily which tanked his poll numbers, he could've even been president. So people should've supported whoever they wanted in polls 3 months out and as the election got closer, say 1 month out, united behind whichever 2 candidates had the most natural momentum, rather than trying to support candidates strategically ahead of time, which leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy/chicken and the egg problem where they can't win because they can't get support because people think they can't win which causes nobody to support them. 2. Your arithmetic needs work. 1 less vote to Hillary is not equivalent to one more for Trump because a voter for Trump can't vote for someone else, so it's a 2 vote swing(1 less vote for Hillary and 1 more vote for Trump), whereas not voting for Hillary is a 1 point swing. 3. One could also point out that third parties work both ways. Voting Third party is one less vote for Trump. Look at Utah where Evan McMullin is polling high enough that Hillary was tied with Trump. If they heeded your reasoning, they would switch over to Trump, which could cost Hillary that state. 4. Strategically momentum should consider the psychology of the opposition. If Kasich had won the primaries, people would be less scared of him than Trump, which would've demoralized people who didn't want to vote for Clinton but were scared of Trump. Similarly, if Bernie had won the primaries, independent and even Republican voters were surprisingly less scared of him than Clinton in office. Similarly, if Republican voters started to unite behind Gary Johnson, it would've reduced the fear of a Trump presidency by Democrats, which would've allowed more registered Democrats to unite behind Jill Stein, and vice versa.

You'll never get their attention until you're actually among them and it's simply not possible to get among with such a short time before election day. They are not gonna change significantly before November.

+oO PPH Oo Bernie closed a nearly 60 point gap starting with almost zero name recognition against someone who has the most recognition in the world. Those who have studied the election fraud showed that Bernie actually did win when all the cards were stacked against him. If people weren't so happy to be manipulated by the system that threatens their lives and livelihoods, we could do the same for Jill and the Green party. GP has people in office at local levels all over the country, but the establishment doesn't want you to know that, they want you to vote to stay asleep in this nightmare.
@oOPPHOo

If you don't live in a swing state, why in the world would you throw your vote away by giving it to one of the two major parties? With our electoral college system, a relatively small number of voters in swing states are the deciding factor. Besides, Hillary's got this election in the bag; she has an 86.5% chance of winning, according to Nate Silver. By voting Green, you would be helping to build up a left-wing alternative to the Democrats. By voting Hillary, you'd be giving her just another vote that she doesn't deserve.
@joshwalker8984

That's not how voting works. Any party needs to start with local representatives. Go research how the parties formed. They got local support in many areas and grew it. @LastBref
@LastBref 7 жыл бұрын
Josh Walker The Greens have candidates running for Senate, House, etc. all across the country. Do a Google search for Green party candidates. Granted, they haven't had much success within the two-party duopoly, but they're not on a level playing field, which is why we need election reform. Instant runoff (ranked choice) voting, for example, would essentially neutralize the spoiler effect. I'm not anti-Democrat. I support progressive Democrats and believe progressives can take over the Democratic party in the same way the Tea Party took control of the GOP. But I also see no problem with building up the Greens. And when I say "building up," Josh, I'm referring to the 5% threshold: when a party gets more than 5% of the vote, they receive equal ballot access and federal funding.
@JaeHavoc

+LastBref exactly. This the narrative that the mainstream feeds about the green party (and other third parties) so they deter people from voting them into office. People don't vote for them, because they don't think they can win and it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yes based on polls, you´re right, but you´re obviously not educated in the political system of America, with the electoral college, they do have a chance of winning, they´re in enough states. And what you´re saying is: 3rd party can´t win, don´t vote for them. And a lot of people do that, i think if people vote for the person they want to see in office (like Jesse said in the interview) and not for hillary because trump, or vice versa, we would see very differnet number

A brilliant way for the establishment to force in a crooked candidate that represents them and not us.

@sh09un1
@sh09un1 7 жыл бұрын
The reason i ask what the point is, your nominee for president has incited more violence from his supporters then those two affiliated with Hillary could ever have. See the thing is, you're foaming at the mouth for a juicy scandal you can sink your teeth into. That's why her husbands (whos not running for president) infidelities and the wikileaks were such big news with the right. You don't get to ignore what Donald Trump does and says then turn around and point fingers, its called a double standard and you've been doing it for the past year. Hillary Clinton is going to be the president of the united states, not because she has less scandals then Trump, but because she knows what she is doing and the American people can trust her to not blow up the world. I suggest you make peace with that so we as a nation can move forward together in a very troubling time in the world. Look at what is happening to people around the world, everything is going to shit. Let us not add to that by fighting for a divisive president like Donald Trump, look at what his rhetoric and presence has done to this country this past year alone... ps. If he does in fact start "Trump tv", then you would know his true purpose for running for president and how he never truly cared about this country in the first place. Everything is playing out like many have predicted... it is time you open your eyes and give it a rest.

Maybe, but that isn't real change. Since 1939 he is the only non Republican or Democrat Governor of Minnesota. That's just an aberration and those will happen in the lower and mid level political system. As everyone already knows the last Third Party President was Lincoln and that ushered in the Republicans and it replaced the Whigs. It didn't really add a new party so much as it replaced an old one.

Nope, the establishment won't let her lose to a dangerous outsider like Trump. When the whole of Wall Street supports a candidate, they win. Sanders had a lot of options to help people in this election and chose the establishment side, much like Obama did early on. Sad, but true. And it's incompatible with representing working people, you can't be on both sides. Now it's up to politicians like Nina Turner, Alan Grayson, Jill Stein... real progressives. HRC supporters will be the only reason Trump has gotten so close. ANY other candidate would destroy him, and if Bernie ran green party he'd be up double digits.

It is weird that people who say less of two evils will most likely vote for Hillary. A majority of Trump supporters don't vote for him because he is the lesser of 2 evils but because they think he is the best. So when people say you don't have to vote for the lesser of two evils they are pretty much saying don't vote for Hillary. Which lets the greater of two evils win.

I am saying some of the Trump supporters don't think of it as the less of two evils this race which is how everyone should be thinking of this race. They just want trump and dont think he is one of the evils. So the "dont go for the lesser of two evils" crowd is mostly talking to the hillary voters.

Granted I'm not huge into politics, but it seems like the dynamics of a Governor's election and a Presidential election are very different. I really wish it were true that there was more than these two options. I realize there are more choices. But realistically, in todays world, how much of a chance do they really have? A problem with this particular election, is that whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, you believe that the opposing side is without a doubt the absolute worst possible candidate to be in the oval office. And the risk then becomes too great that if you were to vote a third party, that the worse possible scenario may come true. If there was a third party candidate that really, I mean REALLY appeared to have the ear of the American people, and they were able to truly get noticed in all parts of America, then yes I probably would vote that direction. But that simply is not the case this election.
@Jobbrown
@Jobbrown 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed that the 3rd party candidates aren't great either, but that mentality is why we're in this controlled 2 party mess in the first place. If people actually had/voted for their conscience and not out of fear or ignorance, the people would actually have a voice. Anyone dem/republican that thinks their candidate is great, is full of shit. A lying hypocrite. It's amazing how Hillary and Trump have made both sides into hypocrites. People are flawed and inconsistent.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 7 жыл бұрын
Job Brown I agree with with you 100%. Both candidates have literally done just that very thing. It's forced Democrats to basically ignore Wikileaks. It's made Republicans ignore possible sexual assaults. And ignore the outright atrocities that Trump has often suggested. I really wish I had faith that the people would vote their conscience, but I don't. I just don't think we are there yet. And a lot has to do with these lackluster 3rd party candidates this year. For a 3rd party to have any chance of winning they have to be worlds better than what these this year are. You would need to take all the best qualities, like Hillary's goal driven attitude. Take Trump's ability to get noticed and the way he can rile the masses. (Without lying or being a prick, that is. Much easier said than done) Take Obama's cool level headed demeanor. You would need all these and more wrapped up in a nice little package. Don't know when or if anyone like that will be coming along.
@Jobbrown
@Jobbrown 7 жыл бұрын
jeremybr2020 Our system has been corrupted. Anyone who would truly represent the people would never get a real shot. Even if they shocked the world and got a little too close - as we've seen with Bernie, Ron Paul, and to an extent Trump - they'd be cheated out of it through media manipulation of public opinion, taking advantage of flaws in electoral system (there are many there by design), or 'rigging' the ballot box if it became that necessary. It's a shame we got the JV team from our 3rd party candidates... Bernie would be winning by a landslide had he stayed in it and went 3rd party. I honestly don't think he wanted to keep fighting for the presidency though. I think the establishment somehow changed his mind.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 7 жыл бұрын
Job Brown Once again, we are in agreement. I also was hoping that Bernie was going to be the winner of the Primaries. Because he would of annihilated Trump by this time. Not that Hillary isn't winning, but lets just say the road has been rough, to say the least. And its still way to close for comfort. It is unfortunate. But this is the world we find ourselves in. I suppose looking at the big picture I should be happy that this is the extent of our troubles here in America. It is much worse in other parts of the world. I can only hope one day we can find a way out of this system.
