Hi Jesse, good video and clear instructions. Perhaps in future you can also include a full demo of the kata before or after talking through the moves? Really like as the video progresses because I can see the whole moves including the stances (from top to bottom)

I been a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan my whole life, and when I began studying martial arts I wondered if I would ever get a chance to work with Sais. Fast forward to the present and I have a pair of Sais that I am hoping to work on a regular basis this year. I also have a first degree Black Belt in Uechi Ryu Karate.

Learning weapons has many benefits, including strengthening of the hands and arms. A beginner uses a sai as a held, foreign object. At an advanced level, it is about using an object as an extension of your own body - as part of your body. When you understand this, any object can become a weapon, and everything you touch becomes a different experience - even a fork. The elementary understanding of karate is to learn to defend, the advanced understanding is how to live.

This sensation is what got me back into karate. I train with heavy weighted clubs and it totally developed that feeling you describe. I realized karate is a study of biomechanics, and that all athletics benefit from what you learn from karate.

Hello Jesse-san! I have been studying Kobudo for some time under Shihan Roger Wehrhahn of Mountain Teachings. Thank you for providing such amazing and free content to the world. It is a truly selfless act and I have learned a lot from you. I noticed something that you are doing that I have been told should not be done, The thumb placement on the Sai when in the natural grip should not be above the Moto - the location where the Yoko or prongs extend out from the weapon, and instead should be placed below the Moto which still provides support but protects the thumb from getting struck when using the Sai in bunkai against another Sai or other weapon. It took me some time to get to the point where it is now very natural. Thank you again for all that you and your family do. The content you provide is exceptional. Arigato gozaimasu

Nice, as Raphael is skilled in the use of his sais. He is able to use them for the Kobudō to trap his enemies weapons within their prongs or use them like daggers, stabbing his opponent. Holding them in a reverse grip between his fingers as well as use the pommel of his sais to increase the effect of his punches combining of his Ninjutsu with his Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Pro & Greco-Roman Wrestling, Sumo, Lucha Libre, Street Fighting, Krav Maga, Defendu, Regular & Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu, Ansatsuken, Taijutsu, Aikido, Judo, MCMAP, CQC, Sambo, Sanshou, and Systema.

Fantastic video! Looks like you have a pair of Shureido sai! I have a pair of these sai myself. The steel variant. They were used in a dojo, so they had seen signs of wear. I learned how to re-wrapped the grips as the pair of sai were rusted underneath. I had since had the sai reconditioned via sand blasting, and then had a professional black powder coating put on them for preservation and protection against rust. Thanks for this instructional video. It can help me learn to use these sai. Excellent work! You have a new subscriber!
