Marvel's Jessica Jones is an American television series created by Melissa Rosenberg for the streaming service Netflix, based on the Marvel Comics character Jessica Jones. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), acknowledging the continuity of the franchise's films, and was the second Marvel Netflix series leading to the crossover miniseries The Defenders. Krysten Ritter stars as Jessica Jones, an ex-superhero turned private investigator who opens her own detective agency, Alias Investigations. Rachael Taylor, Eka Darville, and Carrie-Anne Moss also star, with Mike Colter, Wil Traval, Erin Moriarty, and David Tennant joining them for the first season, J.R. Ramirez, Terry Chen, Leah Gibson, and Janet McTeer joining the cast for second season, and Benjamin Walker, Sarita Choudhury, Jeremy Bobb, and Tiffany Mack joining for the third season. essica Jones is a superpowered woman who had a brief superhero career until an incident in which the villainous Kilgrave caused her to kill someone. After that incident, she becomes a private investigator. When Kilgrave resurfaces, Jessica must rise up to stop him.
In the second season, Jessica Jones discovers that her mother is still alive due to the experiments done by Karl Malus.
In the third season, Jessica Jones faces off against Gregory Sallinger, an enemy who is determined to prove that she is a fraud, as well as her adoptive sister turned murderous vigilante Trish Walker.

I feel that way about The Punisher too, particularly the underrated part. Jon Bernthal was exquisite, and the final two confrontations in the last two episodes of Season 1 quite frankly put most of the MCU final battles to shame.

Wait, you’re telling me a marvel show featuring a woman with super strength asserting her individuality against her male abuser attracted disproportionate amounts of hate? Gasp! I’m shocked! (I actually didn’t know this, given that I watched the show a while after it released, but I can’t say I’m surprised)

Tbh, Jessica Jones might be the only superhero show out there that made me actually think about the “no killing rule.” Like, it’s something that I just take for granted with Batman, and I was honestly super frustrated with the way Daredevil handled it, so I’m happy that Jessica Jones exists for that reason alone. Also it’s just easily my favorite Marvel Netflix show.

Jessica Jones is definitely the superhero show that stands out to me the most. For one, this is not a superhero origin story, the audience were introduced to her after she gave up on being a superhero, and thanks to the interesting narrative device (her working as a PI), we get discover her past and her trauma with her. The exploration of PTSD is just incredible and Krysten Ritter and David Tennet gave knock out performances every scene they're in. But my favorite thing is how the show define what makes a hero, Jessica is far from your typical female superhero, but she always chooses to do the right thing no matter how difficult the decisions are like sending Trish to prison, deciding the stay in New York and continue to fight Killgrave even if she knew she might lose. She's probably the most well-written Marvel female superhero on screen so far, hopefully she gets to return one day.

I loved this show for the reason I loved Marvel Comics as a kid in the 90's. They all too often dealt with very REAL situations. Alcoholism, abuse, deaths, betrayals for self interest. This show hit me at those very honest emotional levels. Spider-man NEEDS to save everyone, including the villains, or he's failed. Iron Fist wants peace and tranquility and is frustrated when people are violent, so he lashes out himself. This show really demonstrated trauma.

I love just how far and how much effort Jessica puts into finding solutions without killing, even if it ends in a killing anyway all the effort she put in doesn't feel wasted or pointless. It always felt like going that extra mile to stave off death still matters. When she comes across the couple trying to kill her because they hate all super powered beings it felt like Jessica was being confronted by the sheer pointlessness and idiocy of how killing to make the world better really is, and their audacity was a reminder to be better than that.

This was a masterclass in actual film critique. Whereas I do viscerally enjoy taking down the posers and haters like TCD and his ilk, it's another (and much more powerful) thing altogether to set the bar so much higher on the other side of the aisle that comparison is all that is necessary to demonstrate difference. Fracking cheers mate. Exceptional work on this one.

I see what you mean here. Jessica Jones feels so real and gritty. But I still can't forget that Jessica also exists in a universe where magic and all depictions of the afterlife exist lol. So that lessens death here a bit. But I still love the gritty feel of Jessica Jones.

I am so happy to see you do a video on this show! I love it to pieces, flaws and all. And this is such a genuinely thoughtful, melancholic, and compassionate look at Death in Jessica Jones! Quite frankly, with the exception of Moon Knight, which earned my respect when they tackled a heavy topic in episode 5 that the MCU has never seemed to have the guts to do with Hulk, none of the Disney+ shows hold a candle to the Netflix Marvel shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher. Those shows, I feel, not only displayed a level of realism and drama that the MCU has lacked, but also managed to tackle serious topics more thoughtfully and naturally. Regarding Daredevil, I really don’t understand why the MCU did not just continue Daredevil after season 3, especially since a certain villain’s story seemed to have just been getting started. From what I’ve seen of MCU Kingpin and Daredevil so far, I’m not overly confident that the MCU will match the quality of their Netflix portrayals.

After watching the Netflix superhero shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Punisher, and Luke Cage, the Disney+ marvel show just don’t do it for me. These Show were unique, visually and storytelling wise. They weren’t afraid to delve into dark and mature themes and it felt like they were their own shows with their own unique visions and genres. I’m not saying the Disney+ Marvel shows are bad, in fact some of them are quite good (if not a bit underwhelming) but it’s hard to not compare them to the kind of writing the Netflix shows had. The closet I’ve had to that was the moon knight series and even that had its own problems. It just feels like settling for something lesser. I mean their are other shows like the boys and invincible (which are quite good) but I’m talking Marvel exclusively, whenever marvel does do something unique and different it’s held back by 10 other problems.

That's cause the Netflix ones were grounded to tie in the outer world's which the movies dealt with. You didn't see Matt Murdock suiting up one way or another to deal with alien threats, he wanted to deal with barely affording the pay the rent and keeping Hell's Kitchen safe.
@q94141

Exactly what I think. The Netflix shows had guts that the MCU seems to lack most of the time. They were never afraid to talk about and show things like child abuse, toxic relationships, PTSD, sexual assault, etc. I also agree with your opinions about Invincible and The Boys. They’re good shows, although The Boys fumbled the ball a bit in Season 3, particularly the finale. It gave me some Game of Thrones vibes.

Jessica is the perfect Marvel character and hero character in general, so much more relatable to me than any others because she's wholly defined by her rage and trauma and grief in a way that feels not performative but real, not polished for the audience, she's an actual asshole and she never becomes bubbly or great with people, she gets better, sure, but she's always going to be a darker person even as she comes into her own. And she is a survivor time and time again and that's where the badassness comes from, her ability to keep getting hit again and again and not stop. I just think Krysten Ritter was the perfect person for this role and she embodies the grief, loneliness, and exhaustion and weariness so perfectly and to the point where it is relatable, but more in an uncomfortable way, a difficult mirror to look into but one I feel better and stronger for seeing too, tbh.
