“I think when you include native communities who have managed these lands, since time immemorial, you're going to come across systems that have been proven to be successful. There was a time where we were living with the salmon as equals and even more so where we considered them to be more important than human beings. I think just having that space and even making some elbow space for native communities to speak and let you know what is important to them, is really a good way to start moving toward meaningful change.” - Jessica Matsaw, @river.newe
In case you missed the LIVE conversation with Jessica & Sammy Matsaw on January 15th, we pulled some of the highlights for you 💕 You can still watch the full film, River of Return, directed by Skip Armstrong, and support their work to reconnect Indigenous youth with their ancestral lands and waters at rivernewe.org/.
Since our conversation, a historic proposal has been put forward to restore the Snake River and build a new vision for the Northwest. You can take action to support a collaborative process to help wild salmon populations, protect endangered orcas, and honor commitments to Northwest Tribes by urging Congress to work together on legislation now: act.nrdc.org/letter/5528-pnw-...

There is a native American saying that I like 'if all the animals on earth disappeared, man would die of immesurable loneliness of the Spirit'. Animals, like trees and rivers, give USA sense if peace and harmony. We need them more than ego. Traditional people know that very well, it's still in the dna.

Without agriculture we all die, Native Americans have been farming for thousands of years, today thousands of Native Americans are involved in agriculture as ranchers and farmers feeding all of us. Agriculture does not have to be destructive to our waterways and our beloved salmon.

Since 1600, over 90% of the deciduous trees in the U.S. have been destroyed for human consumption, convenience and aesthetics. What is anybody going to do about that? Nothing. Toxification of all land continues unabated. The only thing that's going to stop humans is the collapse of the industrial food system.

I’m 1/4 Mountain Shoshone my grandmother was born on the Fort Hall reservation. I agree our people were hunter gatherers not farmers. I love my past I’m First Nation I’m Irish ☘️ remember they were treated as bad as anybody else and Swedish 3 warrior cultures. My dad was born in Rock Springs Wyoming! I grew up In Washington state I understand the salmon issues I live in Alaska now and our King salmon are almost gone! Everybody is worth the same , but our First Nations have been fucked over! And don’t excuse my French, Please don’t judge me I’m hammered but that is the only time I open up. I understand that I’m not full Shoshone but please don’t judge me it’s not my fault! The DNA runs in me 💪! My grandmother was the most loving person I’ve ever known and wise she even told me the stories when our people hunted mammoth and mastodons and had to fight off American lions and saber tooth cat’s and giant short face bears! I found a huge spear point in south east Idaho made of basalt! Must have been to hunt mammoths 🦣 and mastodons + many other things. Remember North America had way more mega fauna than even Africa! We come from a special place and yes I do believe in the STAR PEOPLE! Our Gods came from the ⭐️! Thank you for listening to me it’s a special topic for me and if you are racist we’ll GO FUCK YOUR SELF and the HORSE 🐎 YOU RODE IN ON!

The Fort Hall Business Council has sold the Matsaw family and all other tribal members down the river by entering an "accord" in 2009 where the tribal government receives millions of dollars to not say anything critical of Bonneville Power Administration's operation of the river. Not one word. And Sho Ban are just one of the five "treaty" tribes that have agreed to shut the F up while the salmon go extinct. Sorry ... but that's the truth and nothing more. It sucks.
