I recently moved a tiny heucheras because it was getting too much sun and now its still scorching on the edges of some leaves. Guess it will have to go into total shade. My goodness, you just never know. Thank you Jes for all your great videos. I look forward to just watching you do whatever cause I always learn something from you. So we thank you for all your fun experiences that you share with us. I always hope every day to always see a new video from Jes 🥰

As your mulch breaks down, it will help restructure the heavy clay soil underneath. Just mix a little of the mulch in every hole that you dig.

Hi Jes! Love your channel and your property is much like mine and you have inspired me to push back the bushy forest and add color and I now get excited to dream up the next area to do! I am in central Alberta zone 4 and we deal with predominantly clay soil up here. Years ago I knew nothing about soil composition and just planted the perennials sold at most garden centers here and ones I had seen done well in other yards I envied. When we moved to our acreage and so much of the land was covered in bush and weeds we decided to clear areas and add top soil until we decided what was going to go where. I then decided to plant perennial borders around our home and in those areas added a layer of garden mix soil and just planted the plants I knew well and they they did very well. Then I found gardening videos on KZfaq!🤦‍♀️!! I realized that I should be amending my soil but there is no way I would be able to afford amending a couple acres!!! So on advice from my garden Center pros I amend plant holes only. I mix a tub of 50-50 standard compost and sea soil. When I plant I add 2/3 of the mixed compost to 1/3 of the native soil removed from the plant hole… now my plants don’t do well they thrive! Funny… I watched a video of a gardener that presented ‘clay buster’ plants that do well in clay and not surprisingly she was planting varieties that I have always planted. She is a landscaper and owns a garden center - her property is beautiful and she does not amend her soil… I don’t have that courage! Our garden centers up here sell a lot of what does well in our area so of course clay tolerant plants would be highlited. I thought you might appreciate a list of ‘clay buster’ plants. Hostas Coneflowers Iris- love it & multiply like crazy Sedum Yarrow Coreopsis Asters Grasses Baptisia Daylilys Limelite & Quickfire Hydrangeas Asiatic Lilies Cleome & Gomphrena (annual here) Boxwoods Yews Spruces These are just some of what will do great in clay. You are a joy to watch and I sure notice your name being mentioned more and more on other channels. Take care

I have three echinaceas planted in the same area and one of them was struggling(clay soil theory). I added some soil conditioning from Home Depot and it really helped the drainage there. I always try to put that soil conditioning in my clay soil every time I plant. Wow! I love your snap dragon flower area at the end of your video! How do you even keep snapdragons alive at the end of July?! Mine have been dormant for weeks. Your gardens are always gorgeous!🌺🌸

I have to dig up my heucheras every year or so and just replant them in the same spot and then they do great. I think the roots just like to be moved around and fluffed up. I hope by moving your plants they will do better. Love the new sedum.

A mixture of sand, peatmoss and potting soil added around the plants in that clay area will help. Good drainage and aeration for the roots to grow and expand is most important. One bag of each and then mixed will be pretty inexpensive and enough for quite a few plants. As you dig, elevating them a bit and amending the soil underneath with that mixture will help. Gypsum by itself won't create the quick turnaround you need to turn clay into good soil, the fine roots need to be able to expand and find nutrients to expand and flourish. Mulched up leaves will do wonders to mimick that airy wonderful soil under the trees, and in two seasons you'll see really good improvement. I pickup the leaves in my yard every fall with my lawnmower/bagger and dig a handful under each plant (under mulch) that is struggling....does wonders to the soil. Collect all those leaves on your lawn and start a compost pile, might not want to use grass clippings depending whether you use herbicides in your lawn, so I set the blades high up and just suck in the leaves. Our soil is almost pure sand here, nothing but weeds would grow, so adding the leaves and peatmoss mixture has created a beautiful soil.

Your garden is so relaxing and thank you for taking us along! The Evergreen Soil Conditioner that I mentioned in the last video about needing to amend clay soil is under $4 a 2 cubic foot bag at Ace Hardware in my TN stores. A bag lasts me a long time. I just keep about 2 or 3 bags on hand so when I plant, I can mix it in with the native soil to break up the clay. You could use any fine pine bark mulch to mix in or perhaps try untreated wood shavings.
@careneicke6785
@careneicke6785 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jes, the most economical solution I know for your clay soil is, brake up dead leaves, a lot and mix into the hole were you have planted. Peat moss works. No need for the $25 amendment.

Oh my i hate that you lost the bloom's on that beautiful flower behind deer. Amending your soul every time you plant something will get it to where it needs to be. Remember to plant high where you have the clay soil. Takes a little time but I know you got this. Jess your entire yard is absolutely gorgeous. Wish I still had your strength and endurance. Great job 🪻🪴🤗🪴🪻

Try getting pelletized gypsum for your clay soil. Push the mulch aside, broadcast it and water it in. Also use your auger to drill some aeration holes and use a fill of the gypsum mixed with a good light compost. Then restore the mulch cover and do a mix of the same every time you plant. It will help. Test your soil and if the ph will bear it you could include a little lime in the mix. Be careful with the sand - it can turn clay to concrete.
@GMarieWrites
@GMarieWrites Жыл бұрын
BTW my soil is all terrible clay (Colorado red clay). It takes time and patience to change clay. Finely shredded leaves will help but they also take time to break down in heavy clay. For best results you’d do a one time till of the area with leaf, compost and gypsum. For that matter depending on your mulch if it’s good quality wood mulch and not dyed you could also til that in with the leaf, compost and gypsum. I would avoid adding sand or be very sparing with it.

Great video Jes! I love how you share your thoughts about trying huechera in different spots. I have a couple of huechera that aren't doing so hot, and maybe I will take some inspiration from you! Regarding your echinacea - when you do amend the soil, one other suggestion is to "mound up" the soil in the spot where the echinacea is planted. If you create a mound that is slightly elevated and plant the echinacea on top, this helps with drainage.

Probably the reason the soil in clay in the front yard is because they strip all the topsoil off when thy build a house . 35 years ago when we had our house built any place we intended to plant anything but grass we got truck loads up topsoil . In some cases we dug out the subsoil , and replaced it with the topsoil.😊😊😊

I am in the process doing the opposite with my heucheras. They are scorching under full sun. I am in Wisconsin. I also just moved my sedum just like yours from a shadier spot to full sun because instead of growing upright they were growing sideways on the ground reaching for the sun. How ironic.😂

Just dawned on me, your gully garden soil is probably incredibly good, since it had leaves breaking down on it yrs before you planted. Just guessing you're in a newer development.? Too bad the delphinium was broken, they were so so lovely. Check your home depot too and see if they sell local landfill made compost. I buy that to top off my garden, it's just $5.05 a bag. It's the best stuff I've come across on the cheap.

Those Cleome are beautiful. I have some but they aren’t a bright pink like yours. All of your gardens are breathtaking. You’ll find the right plants for your clay area. We have clay here in my state although I’m lucky to have a mix of sand & clay here in my location. Michigan seems to have some really nice growing temps. Plus I love it that you’re out in your garden enjoying planting without a drop of sweat from humidity. I live in middle GA (zone 8a) & the humidity has ranged from 81% - 91%…feels like a sauna, even early morning! Ugh! I have 9 phlox I found at Lowe’s on the clearance rack & need to get outside this morning & get it planted but am dreading it. (I’m usually done with planting anything this time of year). I haven’t showered yet, saving it for afterwards because I’m gonna get “drippy” for sure.😁 Thanks Jes for your videos!❤
