I hate this ring, and I was part of making it. WHY?! I'll explain exactly why and how you can avoid it with YOUR jewelry.

On the other hand, you could have the pav at the proper angles and remove the excess depth by concave/fantasy cutting the tip. Wouldn't look as classical but it could fix the crap out of that window.
@GemologyforSchmucks

right?! balancing aesthetics of stone and jewelry is a massive challenge some times. Concave cutting is a whole territory that I know SOOOOO little about. I think imma focus on building my skill on classic cutting before I even THINK about that barrel of monkeys.

I think I would have tried to remove part of the setting to narrow the width. It might be possible to do this w/o interrupting the pattern noticeably, but if not, an extra amount could be removed and a vertical interruption piece inserted to disguise the seam.

As a vintage stamped piece, rebuilding the mounting defeats the purpose. Originally these were made for synthetic corundum, which both has a higher RI (and therefore performs better as a shallow cut) and also has a nuclear colour to distract you from the window. The problem is that the design was always about having a big gaudy stone face with a low, close to the finger profile. Any kind of rebuild of the ring in my opinion would change it from what it was. I hate it, but I must acknowledge the thing for what it was made to be.

I know I'm getting off the subject of cutting a fish eye stone, but i think this will be fun for you. Try to find a nice chunk af clear quartz with a single thick Rutile or Black Tourmaline cristal inclusion and cut a Round Brilliant with the inclusion going from the culet to the center of the table. I like using a 9-main brilliant.

Thats a cool idea. I need to work up the "stones" to cut quartz. Currently i'm working on learning recutting (which is a unique form of torture), but I really do need to get back to cutting stones for my own collection and this idea of yours sounds fascinating.

I love mine and it almost identical. It’s filigree all through the setting and a beautiful blue topaz. My grandmother brought it for me. But I do believe mine is thicker. The ring does sit high on the finger
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
I'm that that yours brings you joy and fond memories~ There was an era where these types of filigree rings were exceptionally popular and actively produced. Now so much of the jewelry market has switched over to CAD and casting that we mostly see this type of jewelry in vintage or estate sales (which then becomes my job XD ) Cheers~

Wow Peter, I can’t believe it’s been a year since you started Lapidary work. I can’t agree with you more on that stone; the window is where the beauty of the light rejected comes into play. Get it wrong and the potential of the stone is ruined. Another great share my friend. Rog. 😀👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Thanks Rog. Amazing to me that not so long ago I didn't even know what "window" was XD, and now its possibly characteristic #2 that kills my willingness to buy a stone with nice colour. #1 would be cracks or physical integrity flaws.

@@GemologyforSchmucks Indeed, I learned from a guy in my online faceting group that if you get the Window out of proportion to the Pavilion then your stones beauty is ruined.

Looks like an ideal situation for a deep-bodied, blood-red pyrope! ... something that would benefit from a shallower cut. But if youz just gotsta have dah topaz - maybe some thin, parallel, frosted pavilion facets to break-up the windowing? No matter the choice, your enthusiasm and charisma will overcome any deficiencies that gawdawful ring might dish out!
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
Cheeers Timm~ Pyrope and other high RI stones are definitely a great choice. The main problem is just how impossibly wide the face is compared to its depth. Even with some of those nonsense super high RI synthetic materials will still be windowed with these proportions. The frosted pavilion idea however sounds fascinating and i'd like to see someone do a ring with that concept. Innovations in art~!

I don't cut faceted stones. But why not give to more of a belly add 3-4 step cut facets into the pavilion? Lack of mtrl orig cut? Or would it wash out color?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
Id be interested to see a side by side comparison with a "more bellied" stone next to this one. The depth already makes some inescapable challenges, but from what i've seen, bulkier or more bellied stones often have a more exaggerated window. They save weight (which makes sellers happy because it increases their sale price) but it doesnt usually improve reflection. An excellent thought and something worth trying out, Robert. Thanks

What happens if a pavilion is cut shallow but not polished, while the crown and table are cut and polished normally? I don't think we'd expect the sparkle-sparkle of a sufficiently deep pavilion, but would it help at all with color? From the outside, an unpolished stone is undersaturated. Grayish. Pale. But viewed from the top, and with most of the incoming light coming from the top as well, could a rough pavilion keep the light inside the gem longer, boosting color saturation rather than hindering it? If it causes more diffuse internal reflections, the darker aspects of the sparkle might be lost, registering a baseline cloudy glow that, from a distance, could resemble a stone with lots of inclusions. Which, I'm beginning to learn, is not quite the end of the world.
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
What you're describing is something that is being experimented with a lot at this moment. What is certain are these two things 1) shallow pavilion angles will still give you a window 2) the lower polish or frosted facets will diffuse light rather than allowing it to bounce and reflect. This can effect the colour, definitely, though maybe not as much as we might hope.

@@GemologyforSchmucks Interesting! In optics problems where physical space is a limiting factor, there's sometimes the Fresnel approach. But I don't think the tools yet exist to really exploit that hack on something as small as gem facets. A tiny-scale Fresnel grinding plate would have to be made very precisely, and freehand tools would be non grata to the frittata. Still, it's nice to know that the science is still... like, doing itself, on an age-old process as gem cutting.

Why not choose an opaque stone or a nice cabochon?
@GemologyforSchmucks
@GemologyforSchmucks Жыл бұрын
I prefer to stay away from opaque stones, as they rarely feel to be in the value point that we were aiming for in these vintage rings. Cabochons are a good choice at times, but for this particular ring, the setting has cut corners - so the cab would have to specifically be cut for this setting. I had access to a machine to facet stones, which is different from the set up you would use for cutting and polishing quality cabochons. I know some people who "make it work" but it didn't feel like the right fit for me this time.
