For the ones who don't know anything about airboat camps in the glades, they are privately owned and usually have a few guys in on them thru a lease by the state. They run on generator power, have satellite TV and pretty much all the same amenities as a house in the city. When the area is open to airboating they get used pretty much every weekend. There's many other airboat camps that you wouldn't even know were out there. This camp is not abandoned a friend of mine was out there this weekend. The owners of the camp own a large construction company. The dock also has a built in landing area for the owners helicopter. The only way to it is by airboat only when the area is open. It does close when the water is too high and when it's too dry due to the risk of fires and hunting seasons. It's not a hotel, air bnb, a house or anything you can rent, all the camps are privately owned and maintained.

I’ve always wondered about living out in the glades but I always figured it’d be a waste of time and money because whatever you build out there couldn’t possibly last too long. How exactly do these homes fair against hurricanes? There’s literally nothing to block any wind so every time one comes rolling through no matter which direction they’re taking full brunt force. Whatever the hurricanes can blow. Like even houses in a neighborhood are still getting a little bit of protection from the surrounding houses. Like a tree in the middle of a forest protected by the other trees but out there, nothing. and those homes look old enough to have obviously weathered a few hurricanes. I don’t get how tho? Either way I love it. I’d love to sit out on the deck and just watch the thunderstorms roll in.

The thing is, you get acclimated. I’ve spent 23 years here in South Louisiana coming from Vermont. I am now so used to the subtropical climate that the 20 or so nights it goes below freezing feels very cold. It went to 19 this last week for 12 hours straight and it truly was cold. Another aspect we have down here for most of our winters is just plain miserable: high 30’s and rainy. The high humidity just seeps the chilliness into your bones. Anyway, my point was that it’s all relative to location and the amount of time living in that location.

speaking weather, I live in Southwest Idaho and the summer here is hot dry with at least of triple digit temp. The winters are cold and can get below zero. My father who would visit Florida to see his brother to fish and stuff in early fall. We because of a death he had to go beginning of December. My Mom and I stayed behind to take care of the animals. Its 25* 16 inch of new snow and I had to feed the cows. LOL (I was 12) So a long story I know, but when he returned, he had a shiny new winter coat. Asked him why and he said winter cold was different there. The humidity gets into your bones. I always feel bad when someone from there says its cold.
