I love that the show always portrayed jim as the straight man, which implied that he had no flaws like the other characters. The arrival of Charles really showed how insecure jim was about making good impressions on people. When Charles didn't get a good impression of jim, it drove him nuts. Great writing.

Also the guy pulls power moves on Jim all over the place to make him feel inadequate. That and his propensity for Dwight really does show that he was interested in a bootlicker that would do what he said. Jim displayed too much of a personality for his taste, and he perceived him as being too close to Michael so he was clearly trying to either grind him down or fire him completely. Say what you will about Michael, but he was never an authoritarian. Sometimes that was to his detriment, but he didn't try to make his employees feel small like Charles did.

I remember watching the Charles Arc as it aired back in middle school and laughing at and hating him all at the same time. Fast forward 12 years and boy did I not give this show enough credit as a kid (how could I). Up till recently I had a boss JUST LIKE CHARLES except she often threw emotional tantrums and had everyone in the office walking on eggshells around her. The way he was saying Jim was a disappointment and fell short of expectations gave me PTSD because that's what my boss was saying about me less than 5 months into the job, yet my other bosses and coworkers had nothing but kind and/or honest critiques of me. If a person like this gets it into their head that they don't like you, then there's nothing you can do to change it. Better off not trying to please them and doing your best within your role at the job, even if they don't fully define your role (setting you up for failure) but that's another topic.

5:11 was the beginning of the end for Charles Miner. When Michael demanded that Charles be removed from overseeing the branch as part of his conditions for returning to Dunder Mifflin, I like to believe David Wallace agreed to that condition because he'd already gotten to see how wrong Charles was about Jim and Dwight. Charles tells Wallace that Jim has been a disappointment, and Wallace says, "let's bring them both in". That's Wallace's way of saying, "I still trust Jim, even if you don't."
