You have a religion. I’m not pushing anything on you… “Religion” simply means a set of worldviews. Whatever they might be for you personally, you have a religion. Theism, Agnosticism, Atheism… they’re all religions. To be “religious” is more of a repeated behavioral pattern than it is about a positive belief in God. It’s a conflation of terms to consider religious people as people who believe in the God described by Christianity. It’s a common error people make but it’s still an error. Linguistically and otherwise. Again, I’m not telling you to believe anything, believe however you want to believe, because you do believe in something, no one can get away from that reality. I’m just clarifying meanings.

Well, unlike before you were born, you have been alive. You've been enjoying life, thinking about all sorts of fun shit, including life and death, and then you die and it's over. So this is no comfort. If you feel bad when a good movie is over, then you can understand fearing death.

At 8:11 you start talking and I was wondering what you were getting at; you are 100% correct. Before people didn't need to think critically or think using abstract thoughts to survive in society. Around sometime in the 1930's a group of explorers went to a part of Alaska where the people hunted polar bear. That's all they did. They'd dress them out and sell the meat and the hide or they traded it or whatever. They didnt do any farming or anything. They just hunted the polar bears. One of the explorers was there and he asked them if they knew that there were brown bears and black bears in other parts of the world. He went on to comment that most of the bears in the world were brown or black. The people who hunted the polar bears in Alaska in the 1930's told that explorer straight up that they 'did not care.' The fact that most bears in the world are not white did not matter one bit to them and they legitimately did not care. They cared about finding the white bears, handling them properly and trading them. That's how they survived and anything outside of that was useless information and would be a waste of energy for them to think about. You are correct that before people didn't need to know all this stuff and so they didn't.

Jim is hilarious and I like this bit and many of his jokes, he’s a great comedian! Though his view of what he considers “religion” is pretty simplistic. Makes for a good bit though! lol. Also, the word religion literally translates to “a set of world views”, which every single person has. Every person has a belief system, including theists, agnostics, and atheists, you can’t get away from that reality. So the real question should be which god (little g) do you believe in? What is the highest value proposition in your life and what makes it good? What is the best version of yourself that is best for you now but also you in 5, 10, 50 years? You’re negotiating with yourself across time. Sacrifice is built into how we act out our lives, sacrificing something now for something later that we deem more fulfilling. Whatever that highest aim is, the logical progression of it ends up at god. That’s what god means in simple, psychological terms, as far as I can tell. It’s obviously more complicated than just that. So we all have a god of some kind in our lives. IF it is true that God is real, it doesn’t matter what you believe to be true. IF God is not real, which life, by its fruits, would you rather live, one where you choose to believe in purpose beyond yourself or a life that is devoid of spirit and hyper-rational, ignoring the fact that you are obviously more than a just a physical being that happens to be here. The idea that we could possibly have the ability to know, for certain to a degree of simple rational explanation, whether he is real or not is the highest form of hubris imaginable. Logically, if God is the creator of everything it means he is intelligent, all-knowing, all-seeing and outside of his creation… by definition, and his creation would mirror that intelligence. So from a rational perspective, if God creates beings in his image, those will be intelligent beings. What we call science and rationality, math, etc… those are just mechanisms for understanding the world, it doesn’t disprove the notion of a God. The notion that religious people aren’t rational or they are against science or something is old and flawed and a lazy argument, even if it makes it easier to make jokes lol. I know it’s all comedy here and I love comedy, just hope someone might gain something from this, I just felt like sharing haha.
