Be sure to check out the documentary, I believe called The Canyon, produced by Jacob Dylan, that covers the music scene of the area. Lots of Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, and Mamas and The Papas content.

I ran food concessions nightly at Topanga Corral 1978 and met and prepared delicious fresh food for its patrons and many talented musicians like Neil Young, members of Canned Heat and so many others. It was exciting. I was unfortunately attacked by two men behind the building where I stayed in my motorhome that were later identified as the Hillside Stranglers. It was a very traumatic experience I survived and I left and returned to my home in Southern Oregon 1979.

Topanga canyon road is very unique place. Everytime I drive it, I always say, this place is frozen in 1969. If you read Diane Lake's book, (Manson family member) she tells you about what was happening on Topanga canyon. From the 118 freeway to Pacific Coast Highway. It was very popular with the hippies.

Jim Morrison is and will always be my favorite artist of all time. He really was a true Poet. What a beautiful place. Theres something about California and the canyons and beautiful winding roads that takes my breath away. And lots of history. Whenever I think of Topanga canyon, I can't help of think of Gary Hinman, one of the victims in the Manson murders. He lived in Topanga Canyon when Manson had sent Bobby Buesolei, Susan. Atkins and Mary Bruner to rob Hinman. And we all know how that ended unfortunately. Definitely a grim fact but history none the less.

I was born in the Valley in 1956. My parents took me to the Top of Topanga. There was a burger place there. I can't remember the name but it was torn down perhaps in the late sixties. As a young guy would take dates to that lot. Just dirt then. Great view. "The Corral" is what we called the bar in Topanga. Great place to hang as almost anyone could pop in to play. There was/is a dirt road on that lot going over the hill. My friend lived in a farm house with his wife and two other families. Had a little recording studio. I played drums. It was an amazing time. I left Cally a long time ago. Still, it's nice to see the areas of my youth. Topanga Canyon has so much history that nobody knows about. Gone in the mists of time.

The Canyon has so much history. The original Alice Cooper band lived there around 1969 when they first came to southern California and he tells a story about, how they'd see these hippies at one of the gas stations; a real big group of them. Well, it turns out it was the Manson Family they were always running across. Not sure what gas station/convenience store it would have been.

Drove Topanga Canyon for the first time yesterday. Destination was "Inn of the Seventh Ray", a wonderful restaurant for my grandma's birthday. Wish I knew where to look for this, I love Roadhouse Blues and would have loved to see the land in person. Don't think I was anywhere near there (was driving north on PCH, right on Sunset and left on Topanga) was the general area.

I spent my first night after arriving from Takilma Oregon 1977 & was parked here at Top of Topanga, but there wasn't a park here, just dirt open area where my boyfriend Don Massey whom had grew up in LA area and Pomona, he quite a bit older than I by 19 years my senior and I was 17 years old. We came down from our home in our RV Schoolbus. This spot always in my memories because after arriving at thus spot late night and my first morning here, while I cooked our breakfast my boyfriend went for a hike down the hill and like I normally did to let him know his food ready to eat I walked over to the edge and hollered at him to come eat and I returned back to bus, sat down eating my food when suddenly I looked out window and saw police cars surrounded our bus, I quickly exited out to see what was going on, an large group of police officers approached me and one of them in front identified himself and his fellow officers to me telling me they were the Hillside Strangler Task Force and that they'd received report of a woman screaming in the area, I realized it was me that someone must've heard hollering when I was trying to get Don's attention to come eat, so I explaining to them my actions and about this time Don appeared on foot walking towards us and he verified my story and shortly they dispersed and left the scene. Later that same day both Don and I had driven down to see an old friend of his named Gary Dokken that was employed as a bouncer for the Topanga Corral Nightclub and he introduced us to the Owners Sandy Freeman and Sidney Fish and after discussion, they agreed to hire us as caretakers and allowed for us to park our bus behind the building and we also operated food concessions for the Corral Mexican & American Cuisines, we also cleaned the building daily prior to business hours. We became friends with members of music group Canned Heat, Bob Hite aka the Bear really liked a specialty pie I made Orange Custard and I always had one ready for him to take home when they left. I met many musicians and celebrities while I lived and worked at the Topanga Corral Nightclub in 1977, 78. We returned to Oregon January 1979.

I forgot to mention that while working at Topanga Corral Nightclub, in which movie scenes were filmed here, I was an extra in bar fight scene of movie "Flatbed Annie & Sweetie Pie- Lady Truckers" that starred Kim Darby & Annie Potts (1979), but the actual filming took place summer 1978. Another film crew of "The Elvis Presley Story" used this place for certain scenes while we were there. My how time flies. I was 17 years old (Legally Emancipated Minor at 16 years of age in Oregon) and the Owners of the Topanga Corral celebrated my 18th Birthday and Canned Heat played my Birthday Song.

My husband and I had already bought an acre in Topanga to build the house that I am sitting in today. Once we broke ground on this house, I knew we would never leave. Had I gone outside, and listened very intensely, I may have heard a special birthday celebration sounding like Canned Heat. . . and pretended it was for me.

I did take pictures of the valley down below but it was a smoggy day so the pictures didn't come out well. It was just a bunch of rooftops of houses anyway. Not very pretty at all.
