JIMBO'S GARAGE

4 жыл бұрын

I built these large heavy metal drain grates for a client. They are for a fountain in his front yard. There is several hundred pounds in pots and accessories that will be sitting on top of these which is why they had to be so heavy duty.

Figured 2x5/8 bar stock weight 4.25 per foot. 493.18 pounds per cubic foot on steel. Make you a jib crane that you can use the corner of your table that will mount in the holes of the table and turn all the way around. And when you are not using it or need it can be taken apart easy and quickly and stored in a corner.

A gantry would be great for most applications... I recommend spending the extra money on a main and auxiliary hook set up, this is referring to a permanent mounted system, not a rolling gantry. A couple of davit arms may solve your problem too with electric chain hoist, or an I beam over your fab table with a roller set up and chain falls. Working alone as you've stated requires using mechanical means to give you those extra set of "hands "you need to add enough stability to the piece to safely manipulate it. Would love to see a video on the option you choose.

Somebody else has probably posted this already, but you really need to make a cover for that lathe to keep the grinder dust from coating it. Love your channel, great work as always.

With the engine hoist, if you make up a few basic attachments, like spreader bars, lifting hooks/shackles, etc. You should find it is very handy for moving the heavy stuff around the workshop - like lathes 😉

Jimbo, that is one heavy duty build! I could feel the weight from here! I do have a concern about the welds though. Short circuit MIG welding on mill scale and no bevels on that thickness of material scares me! I am probably over thinking it, but mill scale has bitten me before on a lot lighter jobs than this. Once you ground down the faces of the beads, there is not a lot holding it together. Definitely not equal to the material thickness. Nice looking work though as always!

Replaced my Ram with the air over hydraulic Ram. Ha about 3-4 ft. Air hose so you can keep a hand on the load.Works out a lot better for working on your own Jimbo.👍

Very nice, with all the fine grinding dust/particles I would cover your nice shiney lathe over with a tarp or blanket as that will get over the bed/slides or ( ways) and mess it up in no time... Pointless in spending all that money to cover it in fine grinding dust. ATB from a UK toolmaker......

A swinging boom crane with I beam arm takes up only as much room as the OD of the vertical member, use a cable drum hoist, doesn't take up as much room as a chain hoist, since you don't have much head room, we have two in our shop as the head room doesn't allow us to have a fork lift. Great job as always

I like the show, but for the love of god how can you call a engine hoist a cherry picker. I thought it was a right of passage for all boy/men to change at least one engine in their lifetime. lol Any bets on the lathe being covered up for the next show....

Should have beveled the flat bar for deeper penetration of the welds especially since you grind your welds smooth.

Was that overkill with the 5/8" x 2" bar stock? I wondered if that could hold the truck that delivered the several hundred lbs. of rock and urns.

I noticed you didn’t gouge any and then ground them down flush how much weld is actually holding? Or is it not necessary on this build?
@grumpyone5963

Could have saved lots of checking dimensions if you had marked one first and then squared across both pieces together with a paint marker or silver streak before separating them to weld. Good job all the same 🇬🇧

Talk about overkill. That is the same size and spacing as the grates in the floor of the dump house at our local elevator and loaded semi's grossing 80,000 lbs drive over them all day. You have a great metal supplier the one we have here charges four dollars a cut on all metal.
