Hi guys! I'm one of the people who made the playlist and document for Jim to react to. Just wanted to apologize for some stuff we may have gotten wrong. It was all of our first comebacks as baby Carats and tried to do our best to get the right information for Jim. We know that Seventeen were very successful before the Hybe acquisition of Pledis, but it's hard to put 8 years of information into a few paragraphs. Please correct us politely as we want to know the correct information as well!

Probably lets start with, hybe got minimal to do with seventeen's current success except pushing them more towards the western market. They did have some financial struggle early debut with stage equipments but that didn’t last very long. Woozi always had his own studio. They were one of the most well loved idols ever since debut, having entered the EBS lineup way before kpop blew up as much as it is rn. They never really struggled with popularity as they debut with a hit (adore u, mansae), got a hit the next year (pretty u, aju nice, boom boom), the next year again (don't wanna cry, clap), and the years after (oh my, home, thanks, etc). They literally never had a bad or any slump years, their popularity steadily and organically rises throughout the years. If you would watch some clips when they performed in ISAC back in 2017, you could see the massive crowd for svt. They were literally a mega group. Except they rarely promotes on the west before hybe so western fans would probably not realise that. Like looking at the ticket war in Asia, you could see their influence. They are also the japanese chart monster pre hybe, like if you were to ask any japanese im pretty sure the top 3 groups in japan would be, twice, bts and seventeen. However looking at current charts and current japanese trend, seventeen is like on an all time high in japan rn. The boys were already very very successful. Before hybe they were near million sellers with an ode, which was rare in kpop at that time. It was only expected that in heng:garae they would get the million seller title, and the years after. Literally the reason why hybe took on loans to acquire pledis was because of how seventeen is a cash making machine. Fans..never really meddled with promotions(?) like pledis actually does a really good job in promoting the boys. Like constant english subtitles, them featuring in almost all variety show that ever existed, them getting a lot of creative freedom over their discography, being the first kpop idol to have a concepted fullly subbed weekly youtube variety show (going seventeen) etc. Some of us do donate for ad projects but I'm pretty sure that happens with every kpop fandom there is, so its no sob story. Cmiiw, I probably missed some points.

@@chunsun5042 hmmm I'm not sure about your top 3 in jpn, I'm pretty sure Treasure is in top 3, considering they are no1 4th gen on oricon chart and their massive just finished tour. 😁 Also, BigBang had the largest kpop concert crowd in jpn ever, but a few years back, maybe people stopped listening to them 😭

That was a very interesting album listen to watch, I like how you analyse the production a little bit for each track. However I saw some people slightly distorting Seventeen's story in the live chat. Seventeen and Pledis were indeed struggling financially when Seventeen debuted. However Seventeen quickly managed to gain a stable fandom and quickly started making money. They were the best-selling rookie group in 2015, and were already recognized as part of the top 3 biggest active male Kpop groups by the following year. They've always been very big in South Korea and have continued to grow internationally. By 2017, they were one of the most profitable and groups in Kpop. I don't remember fans ever paying for promotions and I've been a Carat since Seventeen's debut. Carats sometimes pay for birthday ads and other promotional support but it's mostly done as an "extra", a gift from the fans, and many other fandoms do so too (subway, bus or billboard ads are a staple for kpop fandoms). What Carats did to financially support Seventeen was splurging on albums, concerts and merch, the same way other fandoms do. Pledis was absolutely thriving in 2018-2019. Seventeen was making a ton of money, their senior group Nu'est had just had a revival and was doing really well too. Both of them were super on demand with CFs and invitations to shows everywhere. With all that money they hired more staff and were doing quite well promotions-wise. It's exactly because Pledis was doing well that Hybe noticed and decided to buy them in 2020. It's not because of Hybe that Pledis got better. What Hybe did bring was an easier start into the west, especially the US.

Hybe took out a loan to buy Pledis and Seventeen alone made more operating profit than a lot of companies did as a whole in 2020 (including YGE). they're very successful but it's not due to Hybe at all

I think the "problem" is that you went in expecting their songs to sound a certain way and I've learned that, with Seventeen, it's best to go in with no expectations and just enjoy the emotional and musical journey they take you on. Woozi enjoys playing around with song structure and expectations a lot, specifically to induce an emotional response in the listeners. Instead of over-analyzing things from the first listen (which I completely understand, their production is top-notch and your comments were very interesting!), it's best to just go with the flow at first and feel what they're trying to convey, then go back and re-listen if you want to get into the nitty-gritty. In this album, Seventeen wanted to convey their goal to become like the sun : burning with passion and ambition, and very influential and important for people all over the world. That's why so many of the songs on this song are very strong and almost frenetic in their production.

Yes we all know how talented Woozi is but let's not overlook the other members cause they are all talented song writers and other members compose and produce also. Vernon actually has the second highest number of song writing credits and he and Woozi are both on a list of Songwriters with the most credits in the history of Kpop to their names.

I have been following Seventeen since predebut back when they were just babies in the green basement and yes I agree with you there was a lot of misinformation being said. But I have come to get used to it cause people stan a group for a year or so and then think they know everything but how could they when they weren't their from the start of the journey until presently. The only way you could know is if you did a deep dive and research and even then if you weren't there things will be missed out on or overlooked.

😂🤣 yeah cause svt is like no other as what they said in don quixote. They go with their own creative direction. The reason the album sold so much is because svt keeps on putting out top tier songs in every release of album you can check out their past albums you will know how top tier their music production are.
