This is a light up sign cut on the bandsaw using 14 gauge steel and 1" angle iron. The Steel Blackener is "PRESTO" available at sculpt.com Big Thank You to David waelder for the assist in this one!
I would have used a CNC water jet. There was no time to source this service. This job was a last minute order. You can not use a shopbot on 14 g steel. There is many comments saying" you should have this or that" what i should have done is make the sign.. and i did exactly that with the time and tools i had.
The time it takes to drive discuss the project with new vendor and drive to to Brooklyn (AKA traffic city) either drop off and pick up.. i figured can have the cut out letter done by hand and in the process learn something new about my skill set. This job all in was aprxx 2 days mixed with other work. i had 6 days to deliver this. in this short time line i never like to relay on any other vendor. especially one i do not know. Troll on.

I like the way that blackener isn't overpowering. It still looks like steel, just with more age to it. The whole thing looks very clean and elegant. Nice work, Jimmy and David.

Don't listen to any idiots telling you what you could have/should have done.. what you DID, was delivered a completely hand-made sign to the customer, and showed us the progress along the way. And did a killer job of it. Great vid as always, thanks!

Handmade! I'm glad you didn't laser cut this. Brompton is one of the most interesting and innovative bike makers out there. I love their bikes! The old school is the right school for this brand. Great video.

One of the things I like about you is that you have amazing skills. Sawing that out on the bandsaw is nothing but hours and hours of practice - but it also shows people that you don't need waterjets, CNCs or any other fancy thingamabobs to make beautiful, functional things with metal. Another good job, Jimmy! :)

I know CNC machines can so this but I am glad that a person can do it and I feel that people that do it like this, by hand with band saws and skill are worth much more than what can be pounded out by the CNC process alone. In other words, if I was ordering a sign that done this way, I'd be happy to pay the difference if done this way.

traderjoes I agree with you. But don't forget that CNC machines can also take a long time to master, if the code is not written automatically by the CAD/CAM software.

traderjoes I agree. For people asking why not CNC, those processes aren't as 'point and shoot' as they probably think, especially on a piece like this (lots of hard inside corners, islands etc) and that only gets you the parts cut out, still lots of hand welding etc anyway. Besides, Diresta likes band saws.

+Jeka What are you talking about? making a dxf file takes like 5 minutes, including cut-ins. That's 5 minutes of making the file, and about 20 seconds for the cutting itself.

... if you want the job to be done right - do it by your own. The result is speaking for it's own! First I also thought 'bout water cutting the steel but regarding the time/deadline I like your solution better. And you're absolutely right: When working under a tight deadline there's not much room for experiments, e. g. a new supplier, partner etc.

You wasted time not CNCing this! You didn't harden the steel! You cut up perfectly good metal for this! Other generic complaints! Seriously though, that was awesome. You couldn't convince me the finished product wasn't CNCed if I hadn't seen you do it by hand. The lines are perfect, the shapes crisp and clear. Overall, this was an expert job by a Master and it was great watching you put it together.

Jimmy, something you might look at doing is building an arm that replaces the spindle on your shopbot and extends on to a simple grate type plasma table. You then have a simple CNC plasma cutter, it's something I have been considering myself for small jobs. It makes it easy to keep the plasma dust away from your router. I'm lucky in that my machine was a retrofit I did myself anyway but I'm sure it would be possible with a shopbot, you could couple downwards z to the trigger or something.

Wow, that was amazing how you cut it all apart by hand and put it back together and everything lined up nicely. Using a machine would not have been anywhere near as satisfying as doing it by hand. Makes me wonder if there is a heavy duty metal cutting version of a scroll saw that could cut 14g steel.
