Excellent video! I got a 2015 Q5. The pads are due in the next 6-8 months. The disks still look good. I have done brake jobs in the past on Hondas, Mazdas and Hyundais, but never on an Audi. To be honest, I was a little intimidated. Your video gave me exactly what I needed: that is a step by step procedure which gave me the confidence I needed to do this DIY job. Thanks Again!

Question: At the 19:23 mark, you are using a special tool to push in the caliper pistons. I have always used a C clamp to do that. Do I need a special tool, or would a C clamp work as well?

Thanks for sharing this video. It convinced me to finally step up and to a complete brake service (discs, pads and a thorough cleaning) instead of asking an authorized shop for the services. Saved me about $1050 (not a typo) for 4 hours work and actual spendings was $550 (also not a typo) on a A6 3.0 TDI Quattro (2012 model). I've resorted to authorized engine and gear box oil change (plus filters) for now, but this is likely to change as well. It would be a great addition with similar videos on engine and gear box (s-tronic) oil change, differentials and more.

I've never replaced rotors before...it's really just held on by a few hex nuts? That's it? I always thought it was the big center lug that held it on and the hex's were just for tension 😔

instead of all that screwdriver play for that first clip. use the first one as you do, to push up on clip center. then put the palm of your hand on the sliding part of the caliper, push in. should slide past the clip.

+jimthecarguy question for you: i successfully did all four brakes and rotors. it's been about 5000 miles and i'm now getting some vibration while braking. what are the chances that i'm having some lateral runout problems? i'm guessing pretty good. i have bought a gauge to check for this and will do this today. Somehow i managed to miss this bit of advice prior to doing the job. This is something i should have checked, isn't it?. Just curious what you think my options are at this point. If i find a thin spot in the rotors, do you suggest buying new pads and rotors or just have the rotors turned? If i turn the rotors, do i need new pads? Thanks in advance for your input!

+Paul Calvin What brand rotors and pads were they?I'v had a problem with aftermarket pads and rotors.
@kaikane97
@kaikane97 8 жыл бұрын
+jimthecarguy The rotors are EBC RK series Nothing too fancy. The pads are ceramic Hawks. I measured the runout yesterday, although i did not have washers to put under my wheel bolts, so not really sure the measurement was good. I'm gonna pick up some washers and do it again today. If my measurement was good, i only had about .0015 runout. I'm using a Harbor Freight clamping dial indicator. Probably not the most accurate instrument either.

Just doing this on a 2012 Q5 2.0T and I'm wondering what the torque specs are for the caliper mounting bracket bolt? I know some people are enough already with torque specs, just tighten it until its snug, but on a 13/16 bolt thats a pretty good size and I like to know specs so I leave less to chance. Any idea? I think my last car was about 90 lb-ft but that was a hyundai. These bolts are bigger than that car
@benjumper8838
@benjumper8838 4 жыл бұрын
Mine was 140 ft. lb, but so funny that he does nor even use a torque wrench! Brake caliper carrier bracket (two 19mm bolts on early VINs; 21mm on later vins): 92 and 140lb-ft. for 19mm and 21mm, respectively

Great video wish I watched this before just doing my brakes and rotors. One question just did a 2010 A5 same brakes I used original parts, In the video the last snap you had with the nipple I did not try to snap it in. I did not know they were held in with that I thought it was held on with the glue tape and I was carful moving the caliper but it held. Do I need to remove and seat the outside pad? thanks
@jimthecarguy

The Audi pads had glue tape and the nipple it was lined up with the whole. I test drove it and it stopped fine still bedding pads and rotors. will they snap in from pedal pressure or should I take them off and snap them in. thanks for replying so fast.
@jimthecarguy
@jimthecarguy 9 жыл бұрын
I would say most likely they already snapped in because I don't think you would have gotten the caliper and pads over the rotor.To play it safe it may be worth looking to make sure.

Hello, Great video. I have a few questions: Did you grease or glue the brake pads? Do you think a rubber mallet would get rotors off, or is that 1/2lb - 1lb hammer better? Do you think loctite on the caliper bolts would be a good idea?
@jimthecarguy
@jimthecarguy 8 жыл бұрын
+More Cowbell When you install the brakes you use a synthetic brake grease and if you are replacing the rotors use a hammer .If you are reusing them you will need to be more careful use the rubber hammer.

Hi, I have Audi Q5 2011 and I noticed when I am searching for front rotors on the web it is always the same question: built before or after 06/2011. Comparing dimensions of the rotors before and after 06/2011 I found that the only difference is height of the rotor 50mm vs 50.2mm. (0.01") Can I get rotors for Q5 2012? (the price is 100$ cheaper). Also what do you think about drilled and slotted rotors?
