well, that is a given, every second of animation is 30-20 drawings and allows for the most meticulous control of facial expressions, to match it actors need to go avobe and beyond and most of the time they just dont.

Jin-Roh 2018 did to the original Jin-Roh what Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers did to the original Starship Troopers's book: completely flip the political and philosophical meaning. The original Jin-Roh is about refusing the idea of clear Victims and Opressors, asking the viewer to grow up from such a semplistic view of human conflict. It is also about the dehumanization of soldiers and trauma. Jin-Roh 2018 is about legitimazing political violence when "right" and rebellion. It took the carefully constructed message of "the world is not like Little Red Riding Hood, grow up" (literally trowing the book in the mud at the end of the film) and turned it into "there are only LRRH and Wolfs, don't be a wolf". Hiroyki Okiura and Mamoru Oshii should be very angry.

Jinroh 2018 didnt do any justice to the og Jinroh, especially the ending. The new one emphasis on action rather than philosophical and study of social and human nature. Many people that i recommend Jinroh the original say it was boring and slow paced. Which is i think its great because its the slow burn that in the end will make lasting impact on audience, its supposed to be gloom and doom and dystopian. And people says the original Jinroh have a little action times (shooting scenes etc) but i think its also great because every death feels "heavy" instead of just senseles ultra violence. But the ending is what really makes me sick.. they throw away the original ending for some cheesy "Love will triumph in the end" which basically throw away the true message of Jinroh. We are not men dressed as dogs. We are wolves dressed as men.

The worst part to me was just that by changing the back story they created a huge disconnect where suddenly the weapons/armour/vehicles used just don’t fit the era or world anymore. Really only there to go “Looks this was cool in jin roh right???” with no consideration to the story’s world. Though I think that sentence also could apply to the entirety of the 2018 version as well.
@Snzn18

I don't know, the changes makes sense for me. Of course their will be a big deviation since its taking the story to set in a different country thus overhauling the political context. I'm actually more surprised how they managed to make actual parallel of the Jon roh japanese political climate into something that makes sense if it were in Korea. Its not just "oh, it looks cool". Its more of like a take of Jin roh if it was set in Korea.

Exactly, the remake misses the point of the original, i couldn't understand why they copied the set-up just to make a complete 180. And like you mentioned, the original conveys much more emotion, especially during romance scenes. It just seems so forced that I have to wonder whether or not some executive read the script and said "yeah, we can't have a sad ending." I honestly felt robbed. I personally think anime fans in general give Illang FAR too much grief. If taken as a film in of itself, it's very well crafted. Solid cinematography; minimal CGI with what is on display being very well integrated for a non-Western film; inspired casting; good acting; and above all else, the screenplay was very well adapted with sufficient gravitas given to the source material. If you roll all of that into the fact that the material was re-interpreted by a Korean cast and crew to tell a story that reflects S. Korea instead of trying to wholesale force a Japanese narrative to fit their setting, then it should be easy to see that Illang is likely one of the best live action adaptations we've ever gotten of an anime. I understand that people were (and kind of still are) upset about the changing of themes and the slightly heavier focus placed on action, but none of this is unexpected. It was a different country (hence changing themes) and the studio which financed the film would be hesitant to release a big-budget introspective art house film (hence the action). But all things considered, these things were balanced VERY well. Especially when you consider the TERRIBLE quality of the mentioned adaptations of Bleach, Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist. Even the massively budgeted Ghost in the Shell film starring Scarlett Johansson utterly failed to represent its source material in any meaningful way...and that was Big Hollywood doing its "best". Illang exists but its existence doesn't erase Jin-Roh. And it's ok to like both for their individual nuances. You want something contemplative with a gut punch ending? Watch Jin-Roh. You want something with a bit more action and an ending where the protagonist's struggles landed him in a better place? Watch Illang. Illang: The Wolf Brigade really deserves better than what people give it credit for and I think it warrants a second viewing, lofty expectations aside, so that it can be appreciated for what it genuinely tried to capture from Jin-Roh.

I didn't mind the totally different ending. A part of me always wondered "what if Fuse/Lim took a different path?" The movie provided its own venture into that "what if". Fuse and Lim are definitely very different people too; Fuse struck me as a beast whereas Lim always seemed more human to me - which makes their respective choices at the ending more understandable. Besides all that, I truly appreciated that some of the original soundtrack was included in the live action movie. Overall I wasn't disappointed, I'm just glad that this will lead to more people watching the original Jin Roh animation that otherwise would've never known about it.

When he announced that he's adapting one of my absolute favourite Japanese animation Jin Roh and casted my favourite Korean actress Han Hyo Joo, I was THRILLED. I don't think Inrang was inherently bad, but his treatment of the film just couldn't match up to its predecessor. I don't get why for a director who's so infamous for his grim endings had to change a perfectly fine and poetic ending of Jin Roh, so whatever shitshow that was in Inrang. However my favourite point of Inrang was during the retelling of the Little Red Riding Hood, and Mizoguchi Hajime's original soundtrack Grace Omega came out. To me, that was the best moment of the entire movie.

I can actually see why this is a mirror of the original Jin Roh movie. Lin (the main protag here) was an unwitting participant of the incident "Bloody Friday", where 14 or so women succumbed to the roar of MG42s. This, I believe, was the catalyst to get Lin kicked over the edge to mirror Fuse in his refusal to kill the one he loved. Contrary to Fuse, whose division went straight for the masks, Lin's division went for night vision goggles before the masks post Bloody Friday. Why do I say this? They were able to flip the goggles up quickly to see what happened. He was human, but Fuse was already a beast in armor.

I just find it odd that they decided to live action-ify Jin Roh, when (A) It itself is a remake of several chapters of the Kerberos Saga manga so you’re adapting an adaptation (B) Adapting some other part of the franchise to live action would be more interesting (C) Jin Roh WAS originally intended to be live action and to be directed solely by Mamoru Oshii and feature his distinct style, but it was changed later to being animated with Oshii only writing the script, so it becoming live action is somewhat ironic. I mean, I didn’t hate the 2018 version. I actually found it somewhat interesting, but again, it’s trying to remake a movie fundamentally considered a classic which is an uphill battle AND comes across as redundant. I’d have preferred a new movie all together set in the Kerberos Saga universe, not a remake of a remake, even if it is a good remake of a remake.

Which is funny too because Oshii specifically wanted a new story to be the "adaption" of the manga which is why so much was changed from the manga to the Jin-Roh film because he didn't want the same story repeated. So technically the remake tries a new story, but it's not remotely related to the Kerberos saga.

They don't get a love story but we get to see that love is not a physical/sexual thing so he let's go the thing he loves in a beautiful and poetical ending. I still would have liked it more if they got their happy end because one was a government killing machine with no feelings and the other one was a victim of politics and terrorism just to save someone. I cried at the end because both these strong characters survived to become better humans, ubermensch almost because they were almost on the limit. In the anime....i feel like both characters died when he pulled the trigger

I actually turned off Wolf Brigade sometime after the midpoint. The recreation of the film locations was masterful work, but the camerawork did not measure up, and the shot-for-shot recreations stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of the edits, and looked purely perfunctory, and sorely lacking in impact, as you mentioned. There were also several shots where the camera angle angle and zoom level was amateurish (the food court scene comes to mind) and it bugged me and I'm no cinematographer.

I still have no idea why live action move took place in nowadays South korea. I really loved alternate history set up and atmosphere of anime. Whole background of modern korea in live movie was just boring since it was nothing different from my daily life in Seoul. It would be at least genius and fascinating if whole movie took place in alternate korea of 1950s, Separated by Germany and Japan.(Although Japan completely losts at war in original) BUT NOPE. Nowadays korea. That's all.......

I find it funny that people expect any form of a remake/live adaptation of a classic to somehow be better or faithful to the original. Art is like capturing lightning in a bottle there is absolutely no way any director could reproduce that same media and keep all the elements you once appreciated.

I honestly bowed out after the first hour of Illang. I came in immediately after watching Jin-Roh and was optimistic of this remake/adaptation but was quickly disappointed and down right fustrated that the film, despite being longer added nothing new to the story that was originally told and it honestly amazed me the first time when he would talk about Little Red riding hood. And how the story there was same but was so themeatic and relavent to the current one that's being told. It blew my mind when I finished the film and realized, that in many aspects, it gave you the ending before the story was told and that in itself was a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Illang on the other hand, just tells you the story in full detail runing and subtely the film has. Honestly I could go on but no is going to read this much more in full, sorry. But seriously please go watch Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade by any means and avoid watching the Illang version on Netflix.

Honestly though I think that although, in the movie, they kept saying "We are wolves disguised as men". I believe Fuse is a man disguised as a wolf as he shows so much emotion, hesitation and morals. EDIT: Notice in the sewer fight scene towards the end (in the OG Jin-Roh), Fuse waits for his enemies to shoot first. This is small, but it is evidence of his morals.

You do realize that Jin-Roh started out as live action with the 1987 film: The Red Spectacles. After that original movie the director made a comic expanding on the universe and 2 prequel films. Another live action film in 1991 titled: Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops, then the animated Jin-Roh in 1999.

I haven't seen the anime, so my opinion isn't worth much propably. But as a cineast i can tell, that the movie had a very melancholic, dark and intense atmosphere to it, that i really liked. The dialouges where beautifully written, the action was coreographed fantastically and the visuals where just gorgeous. That is everything i can tell about it, from a movies perspective. I do give a shit about the original, book anime or whatever medium it was, if the movie in itself is good and manages to keep you invested into the experience.

I think that when a criticism is to be given on an adaptation of a film, it is best to block out certain areas of what we tend to call "cliché". Its cliché since we've seen it in so many other films. The main concern is what you call the narrative in this story. What is the writer trying to convey ? And how does the director help make it happen. If the film had been a shot for shot adaptation, people would have said: "Well that was a waste of time." They've seen it before, so its up to the creative team to create something new from the original. Its very difficult and trying to do that can sometimes work... or not. However we are all different so any one can love this film as much as someone else can loathe it.

I literally dropped this adaptation half the way, the main two characters were pretty dumbed down along with the moral/ethical dilemmas the original tackled, the original is a good guerrilla drama about alienation while the live-action is just a silly action flick. I remember I also compared the suicide/sacrifice scene to see how inferior it was lol.
