The Battle of Stalingrad is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare, with an estimated 2 million total casualties, the battle lasted for 162 days (5 months, 1 week and 3 days). But in the end, both of them were terrible.

Russians were using that winter thing long before Finland was it's own country(it was a part of the Russian empire for about 110 years). Look up Napoleon's misadventures in Russia in the winter of 1812. Fighting a defensive war in harsh winter conditions is much easier than going on an offensive.
