Spanish is complicated....and Spanish idioms are even more complicated.
This video was shot at KZfaq Space for the #WomeninComedy program, in partnership with WhoHaha and Elizabeth Banks.
To celebrate and support new voices in comedy, WhoHaha and Elizabeth Banks teamed up with KZfaq Space worldwide to invite the next generation of women on KZfaq to amplify their voice through the power of comedy. Maybe, maybe not with so many spanish speaking countries, perhaps in some of them use "Carnero" instead of "Carnicero"

The early bird gets the worm = Al que madruga Dios lo ayuda. The squeaky tire gets all the oil = El que no llora no mama. The nail that sticks out gets the hammer = El que nace barrigon es añudo que lo fajen. Some of the ones I found out to be very similar in message, but COMPLETELY different in their literal meaning.

"Dar calabanzas" is one of my favorite weird little sayings in Spanish. It directly translates "to give pumpkins" but the meaning is to reject someone romantically. That just cracks me up cuz all I can imagine is someone asking you on a date but instead you awkwardly give them a pumpkin, grimace-smile, and run away XD

Then you should check some more: in Spain we have many. We say "estar empanado" (to be breaded) to refer to someone who's absent-minded, "to have bad milk" (estar de mala leche) to mean someone's moody... and so on

But "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth," is a saying in English as well. It should translate. Otherwise, I like this sketch. It's cute and reminds me of my mom. "Okay, it makes sense in Spanish. But you will be so confused in English. Just utterly confused. Anyway, here it is..."

Also, I think that other one with the flee and a teddy bear would be equivalent to something like "trying to squeeze blood from stone", which I believe is a known saying.

Yes, exactly. (And in case anyone doesn't know, the reason why you don't look a gift horse in the mouth is because looking at the teeth helps you guess the age of the horse; the horse is free, you should be grateful and not complaining that it's too old.)

StargrlAnny por ejemplo: vas a una fiesta y tu amiga no sabe qué ponerse y tu le dices -da igual, "de noche todos los gatos son negros". Es solo un ejemplo, no necesariamente se ocupa en contextos de "noche"

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" isn't uncommon as an English saying, actually. But Joanna actually mentioned one before about a shrimp falling asleep in the tide, or something like that?

AskAScreenwriter camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente. It means that you should always be aware and like take opportunities and such, because if you fall asleep the tide will take you away. Tide meaning life, and shrimp meaning you. You are the shrimp.

The meaning of shriimp one is "If you snooze, you lose!", however in spanish is a bit longer but the meaning stills

A similar one is: cocodrilo que se duerme es cartera" (crocodile than falls sleep is purse) I think is more common here

I think the early bird one.. has the same meaning as the spanish saying "Al que madruga Dios lo ayuda", i also like the one about "Camaron que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente" (Shirmp that sleeps is taken away by the tide), or "En guerra avisada no mueren soldados" (it sort of means that In an announced war there should be no casualties....) and "dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres" (sort of translates to... "tell me who you hang with, and I will tell you who you are") there are sooo many good ones i could go on and on...

I've been in a similar situation which is much worse than this one: I'm from Spain and my dad is from a region called País Vasco (or Basque Country, in English), which has its own language: basque. The thing is that the word "and" in this language is "eta", and there was a terrorist group from this region which was called ETA, so whenever someone listens or sees a sentence in basque, they often think I am going to kill them😅😅

People who went to buy a horse in the past looked at their teeth to know how old or healthy they were. But if someone buys the horse for you (gives you a gift) you shouldn't care about the horse conditions. Is like if someone gives you a watch and you complain because is not a Rolex.

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Most of us know what it means because of context clues: don't scrutinize a gift or handout, because you'll find something to complain about. But why a horse's mouth? Well, you can determine the approximate age of a horse by looking at the horse's teeth. The bigger the teeth, the older the horse.

And most of my students always ask me to translate these kind of sayings... and I suffer trying to convince them that there is no literal traslation.... it's so hard to explain because it's something too common for them . thanks for this video... I was so confused when the second saying came up because I thought that that was a normal thing to say, but that's just because we have it in German too! "Einem geschenkten Gaul guckt man nicht ins Maul." And it even has a rhyme, so there's that.

It's "cada carnero de su pie cuelga", which translates as "every ram from a hoof hangs". Butcher is carnicero, not carnero.

There is easier ones like "camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente" - "a sleepy shrimp is taken by the [marine] current" if you don't pay attention you will lose opportunities. Great video, I'm happy to start the year with one of your vids :)
