Poltergeist II: The Other Side is one of those sequels that, no matter how hard it tries, no matter how fun it can be, will be lost in the sands of time to its powerhouse original. With fantastic special effects and much of the original cast returning, Poltergeist II is undoubtedly worthy of a look for any horror fan. In terms of sequels, well, you can do a heck of a lot worse, even within the same series of films, no less. Pull up a table of stacked chairs and see why this rarely discussed sequel deserves some love!
WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: amzn.to/3zkJBLT
This episode of The Black Sheep was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: THE BLACK SHEEP features different takes on horror films that the masses or/and critics didn't care for but that we found merit in. We defend horror movies that deserve more love!

We really like him, too. The other's were actors and he was a stage performer. What we have been learning is stage maybe performing. It's film directing, too surely by what we can tell it's certainly acting, too. The Horton TEchnique.

Julian Beck scared the ever-loving shit out of my child self, which makes this an absolute horror classic in my mind. I remember an interview with Craig T. Jones where he said at a table reading, when Julian spoken, he raised the whole tenor of the read. He was the real life Fred Phelps!

Rev Kane almost has an original Freddy Krueger vibe to him from the first Elm Street. One of the creepiest villains I ever saw on screen. That scene of him walking in the rain singing approaching the house has got to one of the most iconic horror villain scenes going from calm to angry and back to calm so effortlessly. Beck was amazing in this role.

My mum and dad let us watch these movies as kids (I was 5). I remember everytime I had to go upstairs alone covering my eyes and ears incase I saw Kane 🤣 the scariest horror movie villain ever, for me. I saw part of this on tv as a kid (i watched horror a lot and had probably seen worse at this point) but Reverend Kane trying to get into the house stuck with me forever. I didnt even know what film is was until a year or two back (i thought he was the Phantasm Tall Man) but i never forgot him. Also, the fact that Julian was really sick and dying while filming just adds to it. He literally looks like death and it's scarier than anything being released nowadays.

This was the movie that my family watched a bunch in the 80s, it was on HBO all the time back then, and it wasn't until a few years later that we went back and watched the first one. These were PG films in the 80s, so my parents didn't think too much of letting us watch them. They were creepy, but honestly never gave me nightmares. The kid's braces attacking him always stuck with me.

People rave about the first, put down the second and crap on the third. If, like me, you had never seen the first one and it's your first ever encounter with 1980s horror movies. Not just the Poltergeist franchise, but before Freddie, Jason, Michael, Candyman, Dracula, Frankenstein and Godzilla - if you see this horror film before ever encountering the others, then it is something special indeed. The braces attacking the boy, the freaky possession by the worm, the freaky worm-creature and the utterly horrifying Julien Beck. It may not be as good as the original, but the bits that matter most, match, and in Beck's case, exceed the first one.

I wish they had at least referenced Dominique Dunne’s character. Even just a line stating that she was staying with a friend would have been enough. What they did actually do feels very disrespectful to Dominique, like they just erased her character. It feel’s like a massive “fuck you” towards Dominique and her horrible passing… Edit: Apparently they had a line in the original script mentioning that Dana (Dominique’s character) went to college, but it was cut to respect Dominique’s family. If that’s what her family wanted, then they did the right thing, but without knowing this bit of info, it seems quite the opposite, at least it did to me.

@Driller Killer I don’t know what to tell you, dude. I posted a link to an article talking about her not being mentioned whatsoever in the movie, but the comment keeps getting deleted. No clue what’s going on, but it’s been talked about how she wasn’t mentioned in the movie long before this video did. The line about her going to college was in the original script, but was was cut apparently to respect Dominique’s family, which is stated in another article. My guess is that they dubbed that line back in more recent versions of the movie, or my memory is wrong, this video is wrong, as are multiple other articles that talk about it.

A good comparison of Poltergeist II would be Jaws 2. Both have the samish feel as the first film. Most of the cast returned along with the original settings 4 years later. It shows us the scene we didn't see in the first film (more of the shark and more of the inter dimension) which took away from our imagination. Good performances from the original cast and a welcome back to familiar faces and original composer. I think Poltergeist II and Jaws 2 would make for a good double bill.

Reverend Kane scared the hell out of me as a kid!!!! Though not as scary as when I was a child, the Vomit creature, Kane, and Jerry Goldsmith haunting score carry Part 2 through what would otherwise be a forgettable sequel. The scene with Steve attacking Diane possessed is still pretty strong for a pg-13. I'm still not sure how they got away with it, it still packs a punch and ends with the most gruesome special effect of the film.

Beck's character is definitely one of the best things in the movie along with the practical effects. Anytime I watch it I always end up singing "God is in his holy temple" after the movie ends. lol. They could've easily just explained the older sister's absence by throwing in a line like "she went off to college earlier than expected" or something but to not reference her character at all is not cool. For me it just feels like the movie tries to do too much and be way too spiritually fantastical (especially in it's climax) to the point where it isn't as simplistically imaginative as the first movie. I'm all for any sequel doing more than the original and being different but this one is just missing that charm/spirit of the previous film.
