I'm pretty sure the reason everything about the Persians being fantasized and overexaggerated is because it's supposed to represent a story being told by Dilios. He paints them and monstrous and supernatural to put the Spartans in an even better light.

I had this clip in my Nokia 6600. It was in 3GP format. I always used to show it to my friends. I was in 8th standard back then. Those were the times when we didn't have access to Hollywood Movies. The Spartans....most of what you have heard about them that's unbelievable is most likely true. As they existed in a time before history was written and their stories were told and all good stories have some exaggeration to them.
