While Bryan Singer’s X-Men arguably helped usher in the modern era of superhero movies, it was only considered a modest success by comic book fans. While everyone was blown away by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, people pointed at the Matrix-inspired fight scenes, the score and costumes (particularly Storm’s wig) as things they didn’t like. The film was so successful that for the sequel, X2: X-Men United, Singer was given a bigger budget and much more freedom to make the X-Men epic he always dreamed of. The result is a movie many still consider the best of the X-Men saga, although, sadly, the teased “Dark Phoenix” follow-up would fall to a different director and result in perhaps the worst film of the series. But, for one brief shining moment in 2003, the X-Men were riding high, so let's take a look back at Bryan Singer’s X2: X-Men United in this episode of Marvel Revisited (written, narrated, and edited by Kier Gomes).

There are so many great moments in this film! The relationship between Magnito and Professor X is easily one of most complex in Marvel's history and has been played out beautifully by McKellen and Stewart. You could sense how much they cared for each other but yet didn't trust their motives throughout the series but especially in this one. Wolverine had "beast moment" scenes that elevated his character from the previous chapter, most all the characters achieved some type of growth and of course, Nightcrawler's debut was so memorable. I feel this was definitely the pinnacle of the original trilogy....it was a more mature look at the X-men and the world around them.

Top 20 Comic Book Film of All-Time and one of the best superhero movie sequels ever made. I've watched this so many times and it gets better with each viewing, and this is the peak of Jean Grey's character arc within the Fox X-Men universe as all the films after failed to further expand on how great of an X-Men character she is in the comics.

The problem is that in the 2000s it was not like today to create cinematic universes, that's why Jean's arc was reduced only to X Men The Last Stand And when it was planned now whether to expand the story with Sophie Turner at the helm, the unfortunate purchase of Disney from Fox came and Feige canceled these plans, a shame

I still wished they had keep this Colossus than the one they had in Deadpool. And I love the back and forth with Cyclops and Wolverine through out the movie. And like you said, the ways they mourned Jean Grey were very different and beautiful.

This is easily my favorite X-Men film !!! You can tell the budget is bigger,the script/storyline is so much BETTER. LOL.Magneto's plan is better too,let's face it-TRUE BELIEVERS,his plan was lame and corny.A better script also includes better written dialogue.One of my favorite scenes from this film is the visit to Iceman's parents home,I was very surprised to see this scene,but the banter betwween the characters is good.EVERYTHING is bigger and better in this movie.This is the BEST X-Men film for me,DOFP isn't really an X-Men film,is mostly features Wolverine and Mystique,X2 everyone gets to shine.

I saw this in theaters when I was very young so you gotta account for some nostalgia talking, but there is a modesty here that was really refreshing. It took itself seriously while still having plenty of humor. It explores its ideas and themes better than it’s predecessor and seems more confident right down to its iconic Nightcrawler opening. Some people still seem either miscast or underused, but overall it’s very good. Also helps that it looks like an actual movie.

Great movie. Intro scenes of Nightcrawler and Prof. X in the museum are stuff of legend. IMO, it was missing an R rating that could've made the berserker scene way better (thank you Logan), and having again Prof. X captured/indisposed and specially Cyclops. That one has yet to get his movie redemption, even though Mardsen was spot-on casting, they wasted him (don't get me started on the third one).

First off, nice video. X-2 was the best X-Men movie. I hear people lamenting how the series fell to ruin after this, but you should just appreciate everything it took coming together to make this and the first X movie great. Bryan singer's direction, David Hayter's script, the amazing cast and so on. But I digress, the point I wanted to quickly make and I'm not sure someone hasn't already is that Jean Grey isn't only hearing the voices in the heads of everyone at the muesum, but if you listen carefully she's hearing visions of the future. There are audio clips of events that take place later in the movie that she hears, pretty cool

20 years later this still sets an example of how to do a sequel It remains one of the franchise’s best installments as far as comic book movies go A bigger cast, a higher budget, and more mutants for fans directed by X-Men fan himself Bryan Singer The movie still retains its ability to be political but also entertaining escalating what came before Singer never forgets to include the whole symbolic prejudice, racism, discrimination, and xenophobic themes that the comics were known best for There’s no doubt the subtext of LGBTQ is present throughout and it would set the tone for future movies with its metaphors Heck even its release coincided with the US repealing all laws against homosexuality so it’s easy to see the gay aspects sprinkled The most offensive question we can ask each other is have you tried not being what you are The look itself has a road to perdition like feel to it than a straight up comic book There’s still solid acting from Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart as Magneto and Xavier, Famke Janssen gets more to do as Jean Grey and the way they handle her towards the end packs an emotional punch No cure exists for how we are born, sharing the world has never been humanity’s defining attribute, when some have tried to start a war there’s always casualties (losses on both sides, there’s always a moment to repeat the mistakes of the past or work towards a better future, sometimes anger or faith can help you survive, people being afraid of others you don’t have to hate them for it sometimes it’s just pity Despite a few liberties with the source material, not having a ton of stand out action, and being overly lengthy, inconsistent with minor plot holes, tonal changes, and odd character moments ‘X2’ raises the bar for the genre It treats the source material with reverence, unafraid of what was laid out in the comics and thanks to it ‘Logan’ and ‘Deadpool’ wouldn’t exist to be more adult, violent, and grittier More films are set to come because of the Disney/FOX merger so only time will tell if the MCU can reintroduce these mutants in a more richer comic book movie pantheon

I honestly prefered the first X-Men movie. It was great seeing how well the characters were brought to life, and amazing sitting among an audience who recognised them from cartoons on TV. I found the second film was bloaty and the end goes on too long - Ryker is killed three different ways. X2 might have been better in retrospect if the third film had finished the trilogy in style. for me the best in the series followed by The Last Stand because Jean Grey/Phoenix is my fave character although i was disappointed with how they made it a minor storyline to the Cure in the Last Stand. Had they made it the main storyline with the Cure it would've been epic coz the Dark Phoenix movie with Sophie Turner was so bad!!! Im still hoping they could one day tell the Dark Phoenix story right as well as the Age of the Apocalypse story coz that was so epic and scary. The Apocalypse movie they made was such a joke when Apocalypse for me was the most formidable and scariest XMen villain they ever faced.

To those MCULovers who criticize these movies in stupid ways, I say that without them, not even Tobey Maguire's Spiderman, the MCU would not even exist today. The success of these franchises gave Hollywood confidence to give rise to Iron Man. Perhaps they were not the most faithful but these will always be my X Men seeing how Kevin Feige clings to destroying great characters like Thor or Hulk and how the MCU is in horrible decline it is good to know that these Pre MCU tapes exist what I love most about these films under the hand of Singer is the seriousness in which these characters are taken this is not the world of dancers and rainbows of the MCU what Singer did was bring to reality the theme of the X gene and the consequences that this could bring about these For me, more than Marvel movies, they are science fiction movies and that is epic. I will miss these days and I doubt that Marvel will return to this formula for a long time.

Why do they keep trying to do the 'Dark Phoenix Saga'? They always remove huge plot points. Like 'The Hellfire Club', the psychic guy that held her, the Pirate fantasy? Terrible writers abound. You cannot just have the 'Dark Phoenix'
@thiagodszsnts
@thiagodszsnts Жыл бұрын
I agree they weren't great writers, but ironically those movies being terrible were not their fault, imo. Fox didn't want X3 focused on Dark Phoenix, because they thought it was too dark (and probably bc they didn't want a movie focused on a female character) so the writers found a way to sneak Jean in the Last Stand "mutant cure" plot so her story would have a conclusion (since it was supposed to be the last one with this cast). But the last stand was supposed to be all about Dark Phoenix before Bryan Singer left. The 2019's Dark Phoenix movie was another mess-up from the studio: it was supposed to be two movies, both focusing on her drama, reintroducing the Hellfire Club, and possibly introducing the Shi'Ar, but halfway Fox decided to do only one movie, introduce the Skrulls instead (probably to keep the rights since Captain Marvel was also introducing them) and then change them from Skrulls to the D'Bari and reshoot the ending because it was too similar to Captain Marvel (probably because of the imminent merger with Disney).

Great Great movie! But why the studios won't use the comics uniforms for the movies. Then they wonder why the movie isn't a hit in the theaters. They should learn from Deadpool, Batman

Those were other times, even Sam Raimi's Spiderman opted for these changes after Batman and Robin, it was risky to go that way, for me it was fine, I can't imagine the Wolverine costume in live action at that time.

not all comic book suits can function well in live action sometimes you have to make changes in order for some things to work

I think Jean was losing control of her powers because she used Cerebro before she was ready.

It was said that it was mainly caused by the radiation from Magneto's machine (which kind of make sense since she becomes Phoenix in the comics because of radiation too, just another kind) but I agree with you: the first movie makes a point of Jean being very powerful even before that, and as she uses her powers they increasingly expand. She gets to unlock Logan's memories and she uses Cerebro to detect the Brotherhood, both tasks Xavier himself had some trouble doing. Since they were going for her Phoenix powers to be just her own powers enhanced - which was the comics original intention - instead of a cosmic possession, that theory makes a lot of sense, imo. Also, in a previous version of the script she would've become the Phoenix by the end of the first movie.

@@thiagodszsnts that made no sense. Magneto’s machine has no affect on mutants. The use of Cerebro made more sense because Xavier was against her using it. Th3 Phoenix power in her must have been the reason.

@@biguy617 Well, that's not me saying really, that was the explanation given by the filmmakers. She does say she's lost control of her powers after the Liberty Island incident. I suppose the rationale is that Magneto's machine radiation doesn't affect mutants but it caused her mental blocks (that kept her powers in check) to start crumbling when she got exposed. Also, in the original movies, the Phoenix Power os just her power enhanced, not some force living inside her, like it became in the comics.
