In this episode of Marvel Revisited we take a look at Bryan Singer’s 2000 superhero epic, X-Men. The first film to bring these beloved Marvel characters to life, it was arguably the movie that kicked off the superhero boom of the 2000’s, which led directly to the dominance of the genre that we see today. Director Bryan Singer assembled a top-shelf cast, including a then completely unknown Australian actor named Hugh Jackman, to lead a franchise that still exists, in a fashion, to this day.

I still like the X-MEN movie. The concentration camp opening sequence, Wolverine and Sabretooth fight on the Statue of Liberty, and the train station scenes were great. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart for great as Wolverine and Professor Xavier.

Yes and i still love it. I remember cheering in the crowd. But the truth is, i was so mad that they were scared to embrace the comic looks. I hated that, but back then in general the studios were too scared to be super nerdy.

X Men (2000) was the movie that made Hugh Jackman a household name after Dougray Scott overran reshoots on Mission Impossible 2. The first 2 X Men movies are still the gold standard for this series. The makers quickly realised that Wolverine was the most popular character to come out of the movie, that they made him the figurehead lead of all the movies. The moment those claws pop out of Logan/Wolverine’s knuckles is really awesome. The X Men basically set the template that Marvel would create with their B team The Avengers, when they branched out their own movie studios.

What I really like about the 2000 X-Men movie in retrospect is that since it was the very first movie of the franchise they wanted to make sure it would be highly entertaining on its own, and it still is I would say. The first movie alone does a good job of introducing its characters and establishing the basic lore about mutants, Xavier's school and the Brotherhood, featuring a balanced cast of enough iconic favorites from the comics and a standalone plot for them to work together to rescue Rogue and stop Magneto's plan. I look at it in a similar way as how I think the first Avengers movie of the MCU can also be watched as just an entertaining superhero flick even without having to see anything else that comes after it. And it's a good thing to know that this movie can be enjoyed so easily on its own since Fox's X-Men film series got to be kind of a convoluted, inconsistent mess as it went on. X2 was a very strong follow-up to this movie with Bryan Singer still directing, but then it also had teases of Jean becoming Phoenix to setup the third movie, with The Last Stand ultimately turning out to be the most polarizing entry in the original trilogy followed by Wolverine's prequel movie being received even worse. First Class wanted to be a reboot while also staying in continuity, and I think just created a lot more inconsistencies with the original movies from then on, and the fact of all the movies now being branched off into different timelines only adds an extra layer of confusion for some people. Not that any of the later movies haven't had moments of their own, but I do think the series as a whole just ended up being a real mixed bag that clearly wasn't thought out well in terms of the overall continuity. All that being said I think the initial 2000 movie still holds up very well, with or without any of the other movies to follow it.

I actually read an earlier draft, which I found better, and I like the movie. It gave more scenes and characterization to Storm and Cyclops, Beast was in it, Rogue doesn’t get kidnapped by Magneto but actually joins the team to stop him at Liberty Island, there was no toad struck by lightning line, and other things I’m forgetting, but it was a very good read

This was one of the first movies I bought on DVD! God, I'm old🤣....seriously, this was one of the first legit super hero movies that felt 'new'. I grew up reading X-men and when I watched this movie, I felt like they were onto something great - it wasn't perfect, but it opened the door for pushing things further. Re-uniting most of the core cast for the end of Days of Future Past was classic!

This was actually the film that began the superhero movie era, not Blade (1998) nor Spider-man (2002). I distinctly recall that everyone was worried about the chances of this film being successful, and once it became successful, it led to the green light of several other projects. Spider-man only fueled this notion, it didn’t start it. For some reason, Blade, which was just a minor success at the time, has been retconned in the past few years and the movie that started it all. It’s not how it was perceived back then. Everyone claimed it was the first X-Men film that did that. P.S.: The all new all different X-Men appeared in 1975, not 1973, and the comic was helmed by Len Wein and Cockrum.

Blade is a movie that was inspired by a comic, but barely anybody KNEW Blade was a comicbook character. With the X Men the origins were undeniable. THIS was an "All in" move by a big publisher, putting one of their biggest properties on the line (Fantastic Four was IIRC still more popular back then and Spider-Man as a non team up probably too... Avengers was afair despite having some of the best known names not the best property in the 90s and virtually nobody gave a shit about Guardians of the Galaxy ;)) and if it had failed/bombed, it might have been the end for all Marvel based aspirations of ten to twenty years.

Because of the strides that superhero/comic book movies have made in the years since, this film feels smaller & quaint. It's not a bad thing, though. Sure, more character stuff for Cyclops, Storm & Sabretooth would have helped, but it's a fun adventure that would give birth to X2, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past & Logan. Regarding Marvel, this movie walked so that the MCU could fly. I also gotta love this movie because it got me into comic books & specifically X-Men comics, then the 90s cartoon, X-Men: Evolution, Wolverine and the X-Men & the various video games that came with it.

X-Men was brought back in 1975. Furthermore, a staffer on the 88 animated pilot, went on to Fox Kids and bet her job on the the Fox X-Men animated series. Dougray Scott was Wolverine until he broke his leg on MI-2. The plot of Magneto is to turn a gathering of world leaders into mutants.

At Timestamp 10:14 I find it amazing that throughout this review that you did not mention The ambitions, goals and conflict of Xavier & Magneto being parallel to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, respectively. Especially since at the end, Magneto says "..by any means necessary". That's what was the takeaway for myself and almost everyone in my social circles, online and offline.

I was such a big XMen comic book fan so found myself very disappointed with this movie. The casting was mostly off, especially Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (who is supposed to be short and stocky) and Helle Berry as Storm (who is supposed to be African and interesting.) They massively watered down the diversity of the team, making them all speak like they're from somewhere, USA, rather than allowing them to have distinctive accents. We at-least get a touch of that with Nightcrawler in the second film. How are so many people so in-love with this? That said, some changes are great, such as Magneto renamed Eric and given that Holocaust origin -- what a spectacular scene! It's not all bad but so many of the changes made mess with character development and team dynamics so much that they make many iconic and pivotal story arcs impossible or at-least very messy.

Totally agree, my biggest issue was with Jackman as wolverine who never really did the rage of Logan justice. I really want to see claremonts xmen in a movie but so far the fox movies have totally missed the point of the comics. Except deadpool that was good they nailed colossus in that

I agree, the characters definitely aren't comic or cartoon accurate but they were still a memorable cast. What I don't like is the bad pacing of the third act and that the movie focuses way too much on Wolverine same goes for the rest of the films except X2 which i feel did the best job of giving us an early Avengers style movie.

The movie here is HEAVILY based on the cartoon series... The entire premise at play is something that the cartoon series had a whole miniseries event for. And this follows it beat for beat pretty well more or less. Even the intro to Rogue, that was pretty much verbatim from the cartoon. The brotherhood vs Xmen with the mutant stigma and prejudice, this was ALL the cartoon 100%. Even the character looks are majorly inspired from the cartoon, which itself was a mirror of the comics for the most part. This movie did a pretty good job, it really did. And Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine here vs in Logan was similarly verbatim from the source material. It's not a different "take" on the character, it's the evolution of the character. It's the end of the storyline, and it was very much in existence before that "take" on it. That's one of the best parts of these movies, is that they did try (for some of them) to have some legit continuity with the source material, unlike a lot of other franchises when they come to the big screen.
@WilAdams
@WilAdams 2 жыл бұрын
X-Men was a super film. Sadly, we did not get nearly enough of the Rogue storyline--Anna nailed the role, and the Rogue Cut elevates Days of Future Past and should NEVER have been cut. Instead of focusing on Wolverine after the 2nd solo film failed they should have shifted to the Rogue/Gambit storylines from the comics. By making Rogue-centric films Fox would have been way out in front of the MCU (which is now making only Female-centric films for this version of the M-SHE-EWW).

oh please no... as horrible as most Marvel "characters" are (Seriously, how can creative minds suck so badly at giving any of their heroes a "not broken" background? All these folks are sociopaths, societal rejects or worse. DC's parenting complexes in comparison are child's play. Every Marvel big name is a junky, alcoholic or in need of fifty years of psychotherapy. That as a whole group is the writing equivalent of how effing Rob Liefeld "draws" characters. Not just mercilessly over the top, but also ALWAYS THE SAME) by far the most annoying, useless and depressing ones are Gambit and Jubilee... eff them, killk them off, send them to Pluto in exile, whatever it takes, no Gambit, no Jubilee... have mercy with the Audiences!

20+ yrs later this movie still remains one of my all time favorite comic book movies and really movies period..i saw it 3 times in July 2000 though the latter 2 i snuck into but most movies I wouldn't even want to see in theatres again...it really amazes me how much they were able to cram into this movie that's not even 1h40(which I'm glad i didn't know the runtime before cuz I'm not a big fan of movies shorter than 2 hrs, especially if it needs to explore origins).. Patrick Stewart is great in everything... Hugh Jackman is perfect as Wolverine as is Ian McKellen's Magneto...Cyclops,Jean Grey,Storm,Mystique,Ray Park ..really everyone is either good or great in their roles and the politics and what happened to Kelly and also the X-Men as outcast a la any number of people outcasted in our world remains relevant..I'll borrow the Spill Crews rating system and give this a High Full Price..almost 22 years later it's still just as good if not better than it was in 2000...Thanx for the video bruh i appreciate it much

It's interesting to look back at this. One hand has me enjoying seeing this idea on the big screen, a few solid performances and makeup work and even a nicely level plot that feels big, yet not big. But then theres the black suits which I have been growing less and less accustomed to as the years have gone (and that's even from someone who didn't care for them as a kid too.) since it sees they are trying too hard to sell the "seriousness" of things and then it's just little elements like Sabertooth being a dumb brute, the dumb love triangle between Wolvie, Jean and Scott, Rogue being entirely the wrong choice to make a character surrogate, no Gambit and of course, Halle's terrible accent. Over-all, still a nice film, but only as a start rather than on it's own terms as a movie.

this is a pretty weird review, the CGI was not great, it was by far the worst part, as was the rushed, bad 3rd act showdown

Danzig is only 5’3”, which is the same size Wolverine is supposed to be.

I forgot that Ian McKellen seems to be doing a semi American accent. Nice touch considering he’s been in the US for decades when we meet him. Can’t say he kept it for future films but still NOOICE TUSH.

My memory is a bit hazy but didn't Dougray Scott was already cast as Wolverine? He had to back out of the role because of reshoots on Mission: impossible 2 and that's why Jackman got the role. In any case, I'm glad Jackman got the role instead of Scott.

That’s not what happened tho….Dougray Scott was set to play Wolverine but due to Mission Impossible obligations had to back out and that’s when Jackman subbed in as a last minute replacement.

Given how salty Marvel and Fox are now, I'm convinced they changed the costume designs so as not to provide free advertising for Marvel.

Wasn't Magneto the first mutant ever shown on screen with the WW2 concentration camp sequence?

I am usually all about these videos as they are accurate look-backs at some of my favorite movies. However, Dougray Scott could not play Wolverine as he was stuck finishing MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 after weather delays. This is why Jackman was cast at the last minute. Also, Magneto is only trying to alter the DNA of the world leaders gathering on Ellis Island; not the entire state of New York.

The thing that X-Men did better than The other superhero team movies IS that it's More drama than action and X2 was even better. Guardians of The Galaxy was The next one got the right balance.

Isn't Magneto, as a child in the Nazi concentration camp, the very first mutant that we see on screen in the beginning of this film, not Rogue?
