This is a great tutorial. I tried BaseCamp a couple of times over the years. I just assumed it operated similar to google maps. Needless to say, I had difficulty setting up routes. When I did and transferred the route attempt to my GARMIN NAV VI, the GPS acted strangely off and on while on the ride. I would routinely stop on the side of the road and re-set up the route manually. Every time, I became irritated and frustrated. I ultimately discontinued using BaseCamp. -- This tutorial spoon-feeds the observer/student in a very clear and understandable fashion. It was a pleasure to watch. I now feel much more confident with BaseCamp. Thanks a million "Jobybyrne."

Your demo was exceptional. And London was great to see. But, what happens if after you do all this custom work, download to the device and headout on your ride and decide to go off route? Your last route was great for riding, but I noticed a few locations along the route that would have been fun to explore without loosing your way to the final destination based on your custom route. Also, I imagine you can create several different custom routes of the same begin n end point and store them accordingly. Finally, do you use a micro SD storage device? If so, do you have a demo on that? Thanks again, happy safe riding in UK..
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 11 ай бұрын
So if you go off route the device will keep harassing you to get back onto the route. The best thing to do in that case is to stop the route, then ride off piste for a bit then when you want to get back on the route again, relaunch it and choose, "closest point of entry," as the start point. Saving routes to the SD card is easy, it appears in Basecamp as a location you can save to. I normally save to the decice though. You can absolutely create multiple custom routes with the same start end end points in Basecamp. Then you can do useful things like join them together in Basecamp to create a new combined route.

Thanks for the feedback. With regards to resetting your device this should do the trick. Note: A master reset will erase your saved information and restore the device to the default factory settings. This will include all saved locations, trips, and tracks. Start with the device off and unplugged from power. To verify the device is powered off and not in standby mode, touch and hold down the power button until prompted to turn off the device.Touch and hold the lower right hand corner of the display portion of the touchscreen.Power on the device."System" will appear on the screen for approximately 30 secondsRemove your finger when the screen displays "Loading..."The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts to set your locale and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.Although the master reset may erase all saved saved locations, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=5pkqQBOE9L4qzpvROpQ1R8

Hello. Well expleined. Thank you. I have a question regarding this chapter 15 though. What if in any case I lost my route, or my garmin will reset or something and I"ll be forced to start my route again. Which point I should chose: starting point or destination point if I don't have any alerting via points?
@JosephByrne

I'll have to check. If you choose the 1st via point the device will try and navigate you back to the start but you can click, "Skip Via, on the device then you can continue the route from your current location. If you choose the end point it will either let you continue or navigate you directly to the end. I'll check on my device and post a comment.

Thanks for a great video I'm new to Basecamp (using it on Mac). I understand the folder structure, but can't figure out the point of a "List". When I want to create a Route, I first have to create a List and then create the Route inside of this List. If the List the way of containing all the info required for a particular route on the map (ie the routing, waypoints, directions, etc), why can one create multiple routes per List? That seems confusing to me.
@JosephByrne

Hi Elmari. I think that's just the system they came up with. It also helps when exporting because you can export everything in a particular list rather than a whole folder.

Fantastic tutorial on how to use base amp. Thanks for sharing your knowledge it has helped us a lot. I have come across a problem with the new Zumo XT and this is that when I connect it to my mac, the mac will not recognise it as a device. The device charges when connected but you cant copy or view the maps on the device. My son found a way of doing it which involved downloading an android app, then we were able to view the maps on the zumo through the android app on the mac (sorry if it sounds confusing, it was!) and then copy & drag the maps files from the Zumo to a folder on the mac. Then when we reconnect the Zumo to the mac, the Zumo still doesn’t appear in finder but it does appear in Basecamp. When you then go to maps on the tool bar, Basecamp automatically finds the maps folder you have just copied. You can then transfer routes to & from your mac & Zumo. Not sure if you have come across similar issues but if so have you found a more simplified way around them?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 3 жыл бұрын
I've not come across that before. If you have Garmin Express installed and that connects to the Zumo sometimes that'll stop Basecamp connecting to the Zumo. So check that Garmin Express isn't running when you connect the Zumo.

Hello! Congratulations on your videos teaching how to work with Garmin BaseCamp. They are a work of art. I wanted to take the opportunity to ask you a question: When designing a motorcycle route, I had to stop in the middle. A few minutes later, I completed the journey with the other half. When I wanted to join the two halves of the route, I selected them and in the "edit" menu and wanted to "join routes", but this option appears in gray meaning that the option is not available. Can you tell me why? How will I be able to join the two halves of the route so that there is only one route? Thankful in advance. Henrique.

Great video Joseph for a really useful product that is less than intuitive to use! Question - I am plotting a couple of long routes (3-4 hours drive) across A and B roads. I will need to stop along the way but do not know where or when. Is it possible to 'pick up' the route after a stop having created the routes exactly as you have?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you don't cancel the route it'll pick up from where you left off. If you do cancel the route then when you want to get back on it choose the start point as the next destination, launch the route then choose *skip via point* on the device and it'll continue from where you are. If you've plotted multiple alerting via points then thses will all be selectable as the next destination when you re launch the route. Choose one you've just passed and then choose *skip via point* and it'll pick up the route from your current location. If you have a newer Garmin device then you can relaunch the route and choose *nearest entry point* and it'll bring you right back on to the route from the nearest point of entry.
@milesalexander4651
@milesalexander4651 3 жыл бұрын
@@JosephByrne Thanks Joseph. Easiest thing is not to cancel the route and just leave as is when turning the car off. There would be multiple via points along the routes I have plotted but all re non-alerting (apart from start and finish). Think I will have a test run! Many thanks again!

@@milesalexander4651 Oh no. It's usually on the context menu on the main map screen. That used to work on my old 550 from 2008.

Possibly I missed it but, while plotting along a route of considerable distance (across states), how does one move the map without lifting the route pointer and starting a new segment from the via just left?
@JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 4 жыл бұрын
So you can do this with the keyboard arrow keys but that can quickly become tedious if you are moving across a big section. You can also use a scroll wheel to zoom out (or pinch to zoom out I think) and that will help a bit. A smarter way is to switch to the hand tool and pan to where you need the next via point to go and then use the procedure at 36:04 to continue working on an existing route. If that doesn't work contact me using the email address in the about section of my channel and we'll set up a video call.

Hello Jobybyrne, Excellent video by far the most descriptive I've found. I'm having difficulty routing however. When I drop to via points for even a simple route that is only a few miles apart from each other without any intersections between the route will go to a highway or interstate with a straight line that isn't even possible. I'm using a the Topo US 100k map so I'm not using the Global map. I've played around with Routing Preferences and Road type avoidances to try and get the route to follow a simple route between two points with no luck. Ideas?
@JosephByrne

That sounds like a problem with the selected activity profile. Is it currently set to direct? That is the only profile that draws straight lines.

@@JosephByrne No, the driving activity profile is selected. The software is doing the same on all profiles. Thank you, Joby - you've produced the most detailed, well-organised tutorial on this that I've found. @JosephByrne
@JosephByrne 4 жыл бұрын
This can happen because either a) you are using the *Direct* activity profile or more likely b) the map you are using is the *Global Map.* The Global map doesn't contain enough information to navigate. First things first check that you are using a driving activity profile (car or motorcycle), next click on the *maps* menu. If all you see is the Global Map then plug your device into the computer and wait for it to connect. Then click on the *maps* menu again and select the map that is on the device. It should be called City Navigator. Now when you start plotting routes they'll use the roads on the map. Just as an aside. Don't use "Thanks in advance." It comes across as presumptuous.
