My brothers Platoon Leader on this deployment. My brother was on that mountain top on June 10th. I'd talked to him many times about what was going on over there during this deployment. Due to opsec, he was vague. I read the book when it came out and realized just how close I came to losing my brother, and I balled like a baby. I served. One tour in Iraq as well. How I wished we had leaders like Sean Parnell. If I could meet him, I'm not sure I'd let him go after hugging him. Did his job, lost some men, but brought most of them back. The Jocko paradox: listening to Jocko Podcast makes me want to get after it, but it also makes me want to spend 5 and a half hours on KZfaq watching it.

I am retired 82nd airborne division I listen to your podcast every day all day at work it’ flooded me with memories and moments that overwhelm me at times , some good and some not so good , but I am alive thank you for what you do thank you for keeping me alive in my memories... AA...

I had eye surgery and had to be facedown for two weeks. Only able to get up for 10 minutes out of each hour. I spent the rest listening to about 20 podcasts from Jocko. This is what kept me going and it fed me everything I needed to remain humble and to still continue the mindset of a winner.

Jocko needs to be the official audio book narrator and read every war book written!

Literally listened to this book last week and now a 5 plus hour podcast to top it off. Cheeckk.

I’ve listened to this 5+ hour podcast twice and it’s enthralling! Jocko and Sean Parnell put you into the world of war. I’ve never served or been to war. I’ve seen a lot of movies and revere and admire many of our veterans. This podcast drops you into this world better than any other I’ve listened to. This makes me want to do something, anything I can for our American Veterans. You will understand the meddle of our American Warriors after hearing this.

Jocko...you should be a professor of Military History at the Naval Academy; or at least a visiting guest lecturer. I know you have your consulting business and authoring books....but the Naval Academy would certainly benefit from your experience, wisdom, and unique teaching style. You do a fantastic job...keep it up!

I am getting addicted to these podcasts. Jocko and the men he interviews are the best! I admire their tenacity and dedication.

Words do not sufficiently articulate how enjoyable it was to listen to this podcast. Out of 192 this falls into my top 10. An unbelievable story with so many lessons. I read the book years ago but hearing it from Sean added so much more. I’ve listen to it twice so far.

I have been listening to this over the last couple days. Absolutely one of the most captivating, intense real interviews I have ever heard about Afghanistan. Sean, you have accomplished your mission to honor all your men with this book. Outstanding work.

I had a similar experience as 03:34:30 While in Iraq in 2003. I had to go to Al Jabar Kuwait for a day. The AF 2nd Lt in the Chow Hall or "Dining Facility" didn't want to let us Marines in with our weapons. He finally got over it. There were AF chicks running with little shorts on, They had Ice Cream in the chow hall, and fresh fruit, cold drinks, etc..We loaded our packs and pockets with fruit and other junk food.. We found a Hygiene trailer and basically took baths in the sinks.. We left that thing with a mud pile on the floor. Lol.. We were all almost sick and a bit pissed that they had it so nice. They had no idea.

Imagine Doc taking a round to the face and still picking himself up and continuing to take his wounded back to the collection point. That's dedication to duty.

This podcast made my day at work fly by. Sean thank you for telling your story, and again thank you Echo & Jocko for this podcast.

Best Jocko podcast ever! I’m binge listening to warrior stories as my youngest just finished Airborne and is getting prepped next for Selection. 18D. I’m seeking an inside look into the psychology of a warrior so that I can be there for him as much as possible. I know each of us has a calling within to find and he found his just as I found mine. “Big ears and big eyes” is a great way to say one of the core leadership points made. I’m deeply indebted to all the warriors and first responders that keep us safe. This son and my other are FF/Paramedics, aka human angels as I call them. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

The dialogue at times, brought tears to my eyes. This talk is one of the best, and so much better than the usual political banter and civilian bullshit.

I learned about Sean from this podcast 3 years ago. Remembered it and rewatched today, after reading a post on one of his socials. Great story, and especially impressed with Jocko's conduct of the interview. He leaves enough space, lets his guest speak their mind, and gives great support and encouragement when Sean talks about things he wished had gone differently. Thanks to both.

I am not a stoic man by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it’s safe to say that I have little control over my emotions, and they often get in my way when I need to make difficult decisions. I am someone that can be described as morbidly curious. I am not a veteran, although I wish I could say that about myself. That is a long and personal story for another time. I have listened to dozens of these podcasts now, finding myself deeply imbedded into the stories and lives of some of the greatest human beings that I have the privilege of sharing existence with. Jocko is no stranger to evil, neither is his podcast, and as I continue to familiarize myself with the warriors’ mindsets, I find in some vicarious way that I too am not a stranger to evil. Because of that, there may be a part of me that has developed a callous to hearing these real tales of horror, camaraderie, and sacrifice. For some reason this one in particular was really difficult to listen to without shedding tears. All I have to say is thank you Mr. Parnell for immortalizing the valor of your comrades, and thank you Jocko for giving the public the chance to understand. You always find a way to humble me.

Its crazy hearing this. I was on the Marine ETT co located with these guys. Hill 2474 , Shkin, oh man this brings it all back!!! Also.....it was an honor helping you guys that day. I would love for you to hear our side and optics to this!!! It was a "Blackhawk down" moment for sure. Ill never forget this deployment and that day. 3rd Group dudes ( Msgt Lathem ) was the bomb. That 7th group team was ass. I enjoyed doing war with you guys.....SEMPER Fi!!!!

I was enraptured during this whole podcast. It started it off with a literal bang, describing the horrific first day and the death of the little girl. But, I lost it when Jocko and Sean started talking about the abuse the little 6-year old boy endured. My boss heard the sniffles I was trying to hide, this not being the first time he's caught me in tears listening to this podcast. He threatened to ban me from listening to it, but I believe the look I gave him ...he will NEVER make that suggestion again. Another great podcast, Jocko. It was so long, it left NO time to listen to anyone else today. (Hmmm ...might be a good strategy to monopolize because this is my first choice.)

I just finished listening to this lengthy podcast. God bless you Jocko for bringing these truly amazing American warrior stories to the Forefront.As a 55 year old former member of the National Guard and Army Reserve, I have total respect for the warrior class, and those who have actually seen combat. Again, thank you for all that you do in bringing forth the stories of the American combat hero. Our culture needs this reality brought forth now more than ever. I have every intention of buying this book. In closing I must say, Sean Parnell and Outlaw Platoon where and I are an amazing group of American Heroes.

Was good to hear that you want people to know the story of your men's experiences in Afghanistan as sometimes I feel uneasy or guilty about finding war stories so captivating. When Outlaw Platoon first came out it was my introduction to military non-fiction. Since then, ive read probably every one out there.

I've listened to every Jocko podcast.I think this might be my favorite one. Gotta get this book. My brothers served in the same area in the 10th mountain and 173rd. I wanted to tell them about this podcast. However after hearing the first story I knew better. Much respect Sir!

Read this book while deployed to COP Bermel/Boris Afg, my 1SG served with him (“SFC Burley”) there and then few years later deployed with us to the exact same COP and would tell us so many memories of that terrible tour.

I can count on one hand how many books I’ve actually finished. This one consumed me. He captured the emotion of battle, frustration of deployment politics, and the connection between the dudes down range that can only thrive then and there. Books like this make me wish I wasn’t such a knuckle-dragger and could force myself to read more. There’s so many books with similar stories out there. This book has given me a drive to start reading those other books.

Humbling opening to this man’s book and it reinforces my continued respect for the sacrifice and commitment and compassion that our military has and continues to exhibit.

I'm new to this podcast. Listened to about 20 so far. I couldn't stop listening to this one. I will make sure both my college age kids listen to this. This podcast is an amazing gift - everyone should spend the time to listen to understand what our warriors go through. Buying the book tonight - giving this 6 out of 5 stars - just incredible.

Not finished this yet but I love this guy ... He almost tells some parts like he's recalling a crazy stag do!!! He's a total legend and hero!!! His honesty and bravery is overwhelming. And Jocko appreciating the british office for its sadness or darkness, epic. I have never or will never have the minerals to do what these men have done. But i thank them deeply for their service and outlooks. And irrespective if you (like myself) are sitting back in bewildered awe at these guys, there are so many transferable lessons here to be learnt in every walk of life. Bless!!!

Such a great back-and-forth conversation between two combat-hardened leaders who think on the same frequency. Very rare sneak peak into the thought-processes of warriors who lead other warriors.

Don't feel bad Sean. It breaks my heart how he feels so guilty and like he is burdening someone he trusts with what happened. He needed to talk to someone and regardless of what he said not talking about it is a heavy weight to carry alone. Veterans die over these things because it is truly what might eat them alive. Yeah youre a bad ass and can survive the crazy stuff, you also had the courage to decompress. Do not shame yourself from something that is more lethal to a bad ass than a war zone and takes far more courage than most will admit. I'm not saying that you need to reveal classified stuff but the fear and the lonliness and nobody to have someone to trust as a sounding board is not healthy.

I’m joining the military soon. Honestly only got to wait for my system to clear so I can go see the doctor and swear in. Everything else is done. Wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but I knew I’m not gonna be a pencil pusher or behind a computer. I didn’t think I wanted to be a warrior. This instilled passion and motivation in me unlike any other moments, hours, or day of my life. I’m outside of my recruiting station and I’m about to go tell him I don’t wanna do what I was gonna do anymore. I’m gonna be a warrior. Thank you sir for you sacrifice and your service. I’m literally itching to leave now and can’t wait to go become who in my mind I want to be and know I can be. We need more men like this and we also need more men to realize what they can become and achieve. I’m scared, but the fear only makes me wanna do it more and prove myself wrong. Everyone. Ima go inside and get this done then finish my process as soon as I can. God willing I will be shipped off in a months time. Thank you all who’ve served and sacrificed your own freedom for everyone else’s. I don’t want any glory or self worth, I want to be part of something important and bigger than myself. I want to save human lives. I’ve made my life’s decision, ima go inside now.

War is hell!! As a civilian, listening to this soldiers story rips my heat to pieces !! The carelessness of human life by the enemy, the political people making decisions about taking away our soldiers comfort coming back from missions- seriously ??? Wtf ??
