Jocko Willink is explaining that by: * Creating relationships. * Helping and working with other people. * Being humble. * Explaining what you want. * Being fair. * Using teamwork. * Taking actions to create and have good relationships with whoever you are dealing with will help and get rid of unwanted, bad situations, poor relationships. * The goal of having good quality leadership is to kick ass against evil, bad things and solve, get rid of, and destroy problems. * To help things be BETTER, SATISFYING, ENJOYABLE AND HAPPIER!! That's 😎😊😀😀👍👍being Disciplined. Respectful and considerate. Helping others. Making things better. Working together to get problems solved. Leading people. Behaving in Rewarding, Worthwhile and Very Much Wanted, Much Appreciated Ways too!!

Sage advice Jocko. Working within the system...sometimes makes you a little dirty. But eyes on prize, troops first, mission always.

I like how the longer I listen I start to answer the questions before jocks does and get kind of closer. Not on the dot like Jocko does but just a little bit closer each time. I’m glad I found this a few years before I hopefully branch infantry officer

Coke Dogg I’ve wanted to be infantry since I was a little boy. I’ve considered other ones. I’m still a sophomore so I have a few years but I’ve really wanted to be in the infantry, then go into ranger school.

#1 rule of new leadership in the military is to make changes. It doesn't matter if they are better or worse, just make changes. This shows that they ARE in charge, and do not care what the previous commander did. Once they see everyone just rolls with the changes they usually become much more reasonable and approachable. The new leadership MUST establish that they are the leaders before they settle into a routine.

If you got a REAL issue, beyond a shadow of a doubt, you take it higher. You work up your chain of command, and if you are right you have to have faith that you will be found in the right.

I wish I watched this before I got fired. Kind of. I'm moving on to better things and this all worked out alright for me so far. But still, if I wouldve seen this literally 4 weeks ago, I wouldve handled myself better. Basically the same situation just in civilian life. I was so stubborn and thought exactly as Jocko describes; the perceived notion that "playing the game" equates to "brown nosing". Good lesson I learned the hard way lol!

Jocko, what is your advice for the circumstance of being a late-to-come-uppance, late to start son, and being 27 years old, and actually taking on responsibility and trying to hold the reigns of your family, but you do a profession your parents can't understand(aspiring software engineer), it's a really awkward position, I'm not yearning for taking the lead, but realize I need to take care of my parents now, both of them near their 70s, born near 1950. It's a very competitive industry and i wake and sleep pursuing this goal, i understand my parents may not understand that, and i'm okay with that, what can i do to show them i'm taking the lead when i really am? I'm trying to be exhibit myself and feel if I get a 'prestigious career' it would automatically change the perception of myself towards my family, even if what I'm doing right now is genuinely tougher than the 'prestigious position'.

Brown-nosing works, at least up to a point, or people wouldn't resort to that tactic nearly so often. Some leaders almost explicitly endorse brown-nosing as the _only_ way to get ahead within their power structure. This is why we so often say "the fish rots from the head". One prominent world leader is commonly quoted for having said, "hey, if a guy says good things about me, I'll say good things about him". The content or implications of what is said is not important, only the warm tones of mutual adoration. Being merely professional with such a leader won't necessarily earn you a promotion down the road. You might cling to your existing job at your existing level, so you can still defend "your" guys, but your scope of influence will remain forever capped at that scale of brotherly allegiance.

@jonald32z Some bosses are more willing to hear the truth than others. Even with a fairly good boss, it can take real effort to find the right way to deliver sour news-the one that clicks in his head rather than in his pistol grip.

Does anyone remember Jocko saying something along the lines of '''when you're 25 you look back at who you were at 20 and laugh at how dumb you were. Same thing at 30, you look back at 25 and so on and so on''? For some reason that truth has stuck with me and I'd really like to find out where exactly I got it from and I am pretty sure it was from one of these episodes

What if you cant build a relationship cause they care about their ego more than the bigger picture? Eg boss overloads you with work, passes it as their own but assists employees in ganging up on you and blames everything going wrong in that place on you? And you gotta stay there for a time at least
@margaritanoir

Oh well that office was the "messed up unit" briefly discussed here but the boss established no law but would just defend the employees.. Im not sure how they'll last

Jocko, Sir: I wouldn't say new leadership, has a bad attitude. They do have a ego problem. And they are conceited...bags of it. Many seem to walk around (or sit-down behind a desk), flaunting their "New," powers of leadership. Almost as if they go through some genetic transformation when promoted to boss. From a nice, intelligent, understanding, humorous person...to a compete A-hole.

so you still go out and attack that bunker and pple still get killed Just saying but in civilian life when your boss say's do this do that talks to you as your just S%^^& doesn't give you respect as a good worker his Success depends on you. getting promoted in the military is the same " No "???? things got done through other ppl and " your in charge " You look good n get Promoted couldn't gotten promoted with out other ppl help
